Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Dirty Half Dozen + Scars [2x19 + 2x20] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Happy Friday everyone! I rewatched Age of Ultron in preparation for these episodes, so the intro to this vid is where I talk about it for a bit (if you didn't see my messages in the Community Chat, at least!) Very glad I did that! [Direct link here.]

Thanks so much for watching! We are going to wrap up Season 2 next week and then, even though I previously said I would start Jessica Jones S1 right away, I think I'm going to take a break for a week (and just do The Acolyte and House of the Dragon) and then begin it after that. I'll confirm with you all next week.

Cheers!

Weirdly I am going to miss Bakshi. Simon's voice for him was really great. Like the voice where you want to trust him, but can't.

Def one of the best. I still love the Daredevil one-shot, and the Battle of the Bastards one-shot action sequence from Game of Thrones is probably still my favourite out of everything.

kaiielle

Lots of change indeed and still a whopping 5 seasons to go! Thanks for being along for the ride.

kaiielle

I'm still sad about it.

A big couple of episodes, really ramping things up for the finale! I love that the seasonal storytelling in this show can be quite unpredictable as they incorporate the MCU movies. Like having a kind-of "finale"-feeling episode 19 due to A:AoU, and then have their own finale again just 3 episodes later. It shakes things up. RIP the Bus. 😢 And RIP to Sunil Bakshi. Simon Kassianides did a great job playing that character. Very suave and almost "Bond-villain"-like. He was actually only slated to appear in the first two episodes, but he was such a fun and friendly presence on set that they kept writing him into more episodes to keep him around for longer. 😅

Coulson getting the Kree blood is like the other agents that were given the GH formula. They are all humans that got the blood and it healed them physically, but had adverse effects on them mentally. I think of it as a biological rejection because human physiology was not meant to naturally accept it. Skye didn't have the adverse effects 'cause she's Inhuman (Kree made) so her DNA is different. The humans all had to go through the T.A.H.I.T.I. program in order for them to continue to function, until the message the Kree blood was telling them was answered, scratching that itch. So, they're all still human. It doesn't make any of them Inhuman. That Skye one-shot is still one of the best action scenes ever on a TV show. I say one of the best instead of simply THE best just 'cause I'm giving leeway to possible other things I may have forgotten, but I can't think of any. So, in my mind, it is THE best. Oh, and I was RIGHT with Jemma when she tried to kill Ward.

Yes, Jessica Jones S1!

kaiielle

Love all this and thank you so much!

Call me a sick person, but I was not mad that Gonzales got murked. So excited for next week when you get to the two-part finale!! And then Jessica Jones Season 1 (I believe you said you were watching next) is amazing as well.

The destruction of the bus and the original team being together one more time is symbolic. Change is coming fast for this show. It is moving into something new after Age of Ultron. The kids of season 1 Skye, Fitz, and Simmons have all changed this season. Fitz and Skye have had to deal with not being who they were and adapting and evolving. Simmons has become much colder and logical. May has been less loyal to Coulson and even shield and Ward has become an even bigger asshole. The finale was made as a two parter so fitting that you get to watch it that way. This season theme of change has even effected Jiaying who is not so innocent as she appeared.

Not to repeat too much what other are saying or will say. Imagine yourself back in real time. We got the episode where Coulson transmits the Sokovia and Loki scepter information to Hill, with Raina clearly referencing Ultron. Then two days later or so, Ultron comes out in theater. Those of us watching the show knew how they found out about the scepter. Then when Fury shows up with the hellicarrier , he says he dug it out of mothballs with a couple of old friends. All of us.. YES!!!.. Also, kudos for understanding the whole crystal thing. This is not a spoiler, the show clearly laid it out but many reactors seem to miss the statements. It is the Diviner metal that kill humans, not the crystal. Remember that Tripp was fine from the pure crystal mist, it was kicking the diviner and a piece of it stuck in him. So now, we have crystals with diviner metal in them and thus the mist they give off is deadly. Finally, you've mentioned re-watching the show and the movies. That is one of the best things about the writers/show runners for this show. It's clear that they had and have a plan. A long term plan. From the episodes in season 1 that referenced Melinda / the Cavalry, that come back perfectly over a season later and when you rewatch the scenes make perfect sense. There are a lot of those. The reason I bring this up is that I'm so happy that you have allowed the show to use "unreliable narrators" to tell part of the story but then adjusted your understanding as more reliable information comes along. They haven't been retconning, just not giving you (as the viewer), much more information than the characters in the show have. Even Cal saying he would meet his family in the afterlife seemed to be very clearly saying the Jaiying was dead. But now we know what he really meant. He knew the truth, it was us that didn't. Thanks for being a smart reactor.

All very valid opinions and thoughts, thank you!

Finally we get some answers about what Coulson's been up to! Theta Protocol is the repaired hellicarrier from the first Avengers movie, and Coulson is the reason the Avengers knew where Loki's sceptre was to start Age of Ultron. I love the one-shot sequence in The Dirty Half Dozen, and always thought it was more impressive than the S1 Daredevil one-shot everyone raved about at the time. Now, don't get me wrong, that was a great sequence, but: a) it was done by a professional stunt performer; and b) quite a lot of the 'action' happens off-screen. This one though has Chloe herself doing the whole thing, and it shows the entire sequence - without any real chance for her to pause. She actually broke her arm during one take, and still managed to finish the sequence. We also get the original team back together for an episode, but of course the dynamic is gone as you'd expect. Incidentally, because of this, "The Dirty Half Dozen" became a bit of a nickname for the original six amongst some of the fans. I do like chessmaster Coulson, completely outplaying Gonzales et al, then casually revealing Fury is alive and that he's working with Maria Hill. Bobbi's little smirk at those reveals is also a nice touch. Scars just kinda cements why I find "Real S.H.I.E.L.D." annoying - they have *many* good points a lot of the time, but are so ham-fisted in how they approach everything. Yes, Coulson hasn't been and isn't objective regarding Skye, but they sent Skye to Jiaying with the promise that Coulson would be the one to meet her, so choosing to then send Gonzales just sets them up in a bad light from the off. Also, Coulson was planning to go in unarmed, which would have prevented Jiaying from shooting herself to frame S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm not a huge fan of the reveal of Theta Protocol being the hellicarrier being enough to end the hostilities between the two factions - they had many more concerns about Coulson than just that, but now they're suddenly fine with all of them? I get Bobbi being OK with it - she's been shown these past couple of episodes to be softening in her stance, willing to admit that she may have been wrong, and is noticeably not pleased with some of Gonzales' actions in these episodes. The rest of "Real S.H.I.E.L.D." though? Not so much. As a consequence, I actually quite like Mack's decision to quit - it shows him to be willing to stand by his concerns and principles, with an understandable reason.

Sean Ellingham

Yes, Fury did say something like that!

kaiielle

one my favorite things is the fact coulson and the koenig brothers are the reason so many things happened in Ultron, If I remember someone asked where Fury got a new carrier and i think he just said a friend, but im not sure on that exactly. So much going in between the inhumans and Shield, plus throw in Ward and Agent 33 with a sprinkle of hydra here and there with a little bit a Fitz/Simmons these episodes have it all. Not to mention Mack just up and leaving and Bobbi getting taken totally crazy. I honestly cant remember how the season ended so I cant wait to rewatch next week !

Chris Elkins

RIP the bus

Joshua Gideon

Drop everything and watch.. Been looking forward to these and the rest of the season.
