Shining Through (1992) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Happy Thursday lovelies! Today's movie was a request that came through my Reactr page - thank you so much to the requester for sending this in. I had never heard of this movie before, so had no clue who was in it or what it was about.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts, especially if you watched for the first time with me! Thanks so much. [Direct link here.]

Just finished watching the reaction…loved it. This movie has a little bit of everything…spy thriller, romance, action, drama, etc. Everyone I’ve ever shown it to has also loved it. Super underrated flick. Thanks so much 🙏🏼

So I'm a big fan of Vanessa and Jemma Redgrave so finding out Joely Richardson is Vanessa Redgrave's daughter is pretty awesome 😎 I was thoroughly surprised by this film. It was tense, it was romantic and heartbreaking, and it kept me on edge practically the whole time. The critics that said it was bad, including Roger Ebert (shame on you Roger), must have been part of the generation that believed women couldn't do much outside of what men told them to do. I loved having a competent leading woman who was ready to risk her life to get the job done. If it had been a man (Ethan Hunt anyone?) then those same critics probably would have praised it. What's more implausible, Shining Through or The Game? Come on, critics. I'm surprised I'd never heard of this before given I'm a huge Michael Douglas fan however I'm glad you reacted to it! It's $10 on Fandango/Vudu which I think is well worth it so I'm nabbing it. Definitely rewatchable and I'm gonna recommend it around! Thank you to whoever requested it, I loved it.

Interesting, I thought I knew every Michael Douglas movie! I'm excited to watch this!

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Not a bad idea!

Sounds like a premise that is sort of in the same ballpark as a couple of other movies I've been loosely planning on watching (none of which I have seen): Paul Verhoeven's Black Book (2006), and Keith Gordon's Mother Night (1996). Maybe I'll watch all three and have a feel-bad triple feature!

Never heard this one either. I am intrigued. 🤔
