X2 (2003) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

We're two movies in and I needed tissues?! I didn't sign up for this. I'm still on board with this whole X-Men thing and I'm looking forward to more! And please forgive me for all the Toad stuff in this reaction LOL I definitely forgot about that scene in the last movie, for some reason. 😂

Please enjoy! Thank you so much for watching with me.

X2 (2003) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

This was my first full rewatch in at least a decade. This movie really holds up. The characters and themes just worked. Your reaction to Bobby’s mom asking, “Have you tried not being a mutant?” was spot on. The original title was X2: X-Men United which has slowly become the simple X2, but seeing the mutants come together for a cause, with their differing ideologies really drove the story. And Wolverine is a (comic) fan favorite, so he really does stand out as the main character in a movie that would benefit from letting the ensemble breathe. I didn’t realize how little screen time Scott had, or his relationship with Jean in this movie. I would have liked to have seen them together more before the end. Cyclops is the X-Men leader in the comics and a great character there, set aside in these last two movies in favor of Logan pursuing Jean, who is in a happy relationship. Glad you enjoyed it, looking forward to the next movie in the series.

I grew up with the animated series and Nightcrawler was always my favorite. My mind was blown with the beginning of this movie in theaters

My favorite quote from this movie is when Pyro was doubting his gifts and feeling insecure about them, Magneto said, “You are a God among insects. Never let anyone tell you different.”

Ahhhhh...the best of the original three...then X-Men: First Class...then X-Men: Days of Future Past...then all the Deadpools...and then Logan...and that's it. They stop there. They didn't make anymore other than those. No...really. They didn't...

Magneto & Mystique were both channeling Loki in this movie. The enemy of my enemy and all that. Magneto’s prison break is an all time favorite Marvel scene for me. Erik’s glee and snark as he is brutally killing the guard is perfect. The wink he gives him right before obliterating his cell with 3 little metal balls is chef’s kiss. You described it as dramatic, never has there been a better word to describe Magneto. Erik is DRAMATIC AS F*CK 😆 A close 2nd favorite is he and Mystique being “mean girls” to Rouge on the jet and her threatening them simply by removing her glove, good stuff, that’s how you know you are bad ass. I love the seduction of Pyro to the “dark side” Erik knows how to manipulate a mind almost better than Charles. And when it comes to channeling the dark side, Erik can rock a helmet and work a cape with all the swish and swagger of Lord Vader. McKellen just eats this role up, it is crazy to think around this same time he would have been working on the LOTR films in New Zealand. It must have been fun to play such iconic roles so close together. Behind the scenes notes: Sir Ian McKellen came out publicly as homosexual in the late 80’s. He was consulted with on the scene where Bobby “comes out” as a Mutant to his parents. I love it when an actor has that extra personal connection to the material.

I am getting behind on Daredevil, but I am on such an X-Men high right now. The Man Without Fear will have to wait a couple more hours. Bring on the Mutants!!! Speaking of tissues, I have heavy memories associated with seeing this film for the first time in theaters. I have mentioned my first born before and how his time in this life was not long. He passed away in May of 2003, 3 months after his birth and the same month 2 mega blockbuster summer sequels were released in theaters. The Matrix Reloaded, which I still need to watch your reaction to, my apologies, and X2. My husband and I were off work for most of the month of May that year, given the circumstances and our mental state. A few days after we put our son’s body to rest, the Husband suggested we take the day, go out for nice lunch & dinner, and catch a couple of good movies. We Reloaded the Matrix first and ended the night with the X-Men. Despite the heaviness of our reality at the time, it was an awesome day and a bittersweet memory for sure. Movies are an amazing art form, and while our grief was always there…being whisked away to these fantastical universes for a few hours was exactly what we needed that day. As a kid, the X-Men gave me a sense of understanding, belonging, and comfort. Kid me would’ve never thought they would still be doing it decades later. Thank you again for sharing your journey and these first time memories with us.
