Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

With how much I loved Into the Spider-Verse, I was pretty confident that this one would be just as fun. I say it in the video, but I'm 100% going to be seeing the third one in theatres... I can't miss out on the experience of these movies on the big screen. [Direct link here.]

Please enjoy! Looking forward to your comments.

Playing some catch up. This is a long movie and I knew I needed a good block of time to rewatch. The first time I watched this movie was when it arrived on Netflix. I didn’t find myself engaged and felt many of the scenes went on for one beat too many. I was very bored. Today, I was focused and saw how much I missed. I still feel like 10 minutes (or more) could have been shaved off without losing any of the story with tighter editing but I found myself engaged with the story and clearly the distractions I had in December impacted my experience because I didn’t remember huge chunks of the beginning. I look forward to the third movie and a rewatch of the first two before heading to the theater.

Apparently the filmmakers were close to dropping the character from the movie before they teamed up with Kaluuya, who brought so much inspiration to the character that they ended up writing additional material for him instead.

I seem to recall you gave it a star rating that implied you didn't like it very much so I figured that was part of it too.

Thank you! TBF, it's been literal years since I've seen that LOL. I would not have remembered.

Thank you

Per your Letterboxd, you would've seen Jason Schwartzman as the final Evil Ex Gideon Graves in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

I love these movies so much. I also want to add that two of the writers and producers of this movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, have a production studio together which just so happens to have acquired the screen rights for my absolute favourite book series so I'd say I'm optimistic about that if not excited lol. Might be a bunch of years before something comes of that but I can wait.

I saw both movies multiple times in the theater in IMAX. I never see movies in theaters multiple times, but these were just too good to pass up.

Nah group project comes first! This reaction isn't going anywhere. 😏

I would say that Miguel is an antagonist to Miles' protagonist, but he's not a villain. Spot is the villain. Miguel is trying to hold everything together and he believes his way, that he's figured out to keep things together, is the only way. He means well and doesn't want to hurt anyone, he just thinks Miles is going to, ya know, destroy the universe with his good intentions. Miles makes me believe that he can do what he needs to do without destroying the universe. When he was like, "Nah, I'm gonna do it MY way." I was like, "Oh, damn. I believe him." I loved the ending too with him tied up with the Prowler and he had just told him mother that he wasn't afraid of anything and the last shot we see of him has him as the Prowler staring at him threateningly and you see Miles' face and there's no fear. I was like "Ohh-ho, he's got a plan!" That got me SO hyped...then it ended and I said, in the theater, "OH RIGHT! I FORGOT THIS WAS #2 OUT OF 3!" Heh, so many people in the theater did NOT know that fun fact and were like 'WHAT???" when it ended. 😁 Miguel is definitely a more serious Spider-Man. What I remember was that he started out, before he got his spider powers, close to the Tony Stark of this dimension. He even had that snarky cocky sense about him. He was a genius billionaire, head of a company, except he had a brother and a mother still alive. His brother was kind of a screw-up who couldn't seem to get his life together, but their mother always treated him like the golden boy while she always gave Miguel flack about anything and everything, even though he was the more successful one. There was a this new designer street drug that was created by his company, without him knowing, that was extremely addictive where if you have one dose, you are physically addicted to it, so if you don't keep using it, you'll die. The person in the company who designed it, gave him a dose when Miguel found out, thinking it would kill him. I think Miguel was working on some healing properties with certain spiders. So, he tried to flush his system of the drug by splicing himself with spider DNA. (This is how I remember it. I haven't read it since it came out in the 90s) I don't think it got rid of the drug, but it keeps it from killing him, but the addiction is still there. I think that's what you see him inject himself with when we first see him in his...lair. I think it doesn't get him high, it just keeps him from getting withdrawal systems. His fingertips have retractable claws, which we saw here, that can cut though metal and are what gives him the ability to climb walls. He also has light sensitivity which is why he would usually wear sunglasses, when he wasn't in his suit. His eyes were originally all black and that's also why he wore the glasses, to hide that fact from everyone. Don't know how/if he got that fixed. Maybe he wears contacts? Oh yeah, you saw his fangs when he first showed up and he was about to bite the Renaissance Vulture. It's because he has paralytic venom, like a spider. He sometimes uses it to subdue his enemies. Hobie was played by the lead actor in the movie "Get Out." He was also in Black Panther. I forget his character's name but he was the head of the tribe that had the rhinos and he was Akoye's boyfriend.

I was just sitting wondering what I wanted to watch. My last weekend night before I have to work tomorrow night. This comes in and I just said, "...That'll do."

Thadman

Dang I really want to watch this right now but it’s 3am and I’ll be working on a group project all day tomorrow 😭😭

Camryn Brown

So excited to watch! It's perfect. The third one was supposed to come out a couple weeks ago, looks like we're going to have to wait quite a while longer lol 😭
