Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Making Friends and Influencing People + Face My Enemy [2x03 + 2x04] ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction & Review

My favorite things early on is seeing how fast the actor/actress behind Fitz/Simmons change and develop how they both adept their characters is well done. I really would loved to seen how far Fitz took the oxygen down before turning it back up. The way he acted being so traumatized by seeing Ward was an amazing scene. I think my other favorite thing would be Hunter he's such a likeable character, I don't know the actor at all but i swear it seems like he would be a cool guy to hang out with in general. He seems to just fit in at making everyone at ease but still push the envelope when needed. Like always watching your reaction to things onscreen that I know whats gonna happen and seeing youre expression is whats priceless about doing watch alongs !

A fun couple of episodes! The mind control stuff feels a bit played out imho, but actually within the context of the MCU it makes total sense. It was a key element of Winter Soldier/Civil War, and then also in Agent Carter. It's all different iterations of the same tech. 🤷‍♂️ One thing you were starting to comment on but got interrupted by the show, that I wanted to highlight too: I love how they make it a point that HYDRA had no idea who is running SHIELD (which is great news), and then it's Couson himself that ends up spilling the beans by telling Fake May (Fay?) in the car that he's the director... 🤦‍♂️

Donnie Gill's supervillain name was "Blizzard" which is referenced in this episode of the show by having Simmons work on HYDRA's "Project Blizzard", with the reveal that that was Donnie's cells she was researching.

2x3 This episode is definitely about Fitz and Simmons separate journeys this season. Simmons working at Hydra undercover is the last thing you would expect but it is great to see her lying improve from season one. The Fitz and Ward scenes are hard to watch and Ian's performance always makes me emotional. The other comments already mentioned the MCU movie connections but it is great to see the lore expanded upon. Now we know why there aren't many brainwashed subjects. Ward says it is mostly high value targets they try it on and it is not done often.

Brainwashing with trigger words we've seen in the Winter Soldier, so I'm sure this is an update to that. After Bucky would succumb to the words, he'd say he was "ready to comply." So, they've been doing that for a while and Whitehall is...pretty old. I'm sure he's "operated" on more women (and men) than Agent 33 during his time and he seems like the type of person who enjoys that sort of thing. He was proud of it, it seems. Gross. I remember some people saying, at the time, what Donnie Gill's persona was called in the comics, 'cause he is, evidently, a comic book character who had cold powers. Pretty sure he was a villain. Also, Talbot is from the comics. He tended to be a Hulk antagonist, just under the rank of Thunderbolt Ross who was always chasing the Hulk. I always hated him in the comics, but his military zealousness is funnier here.

So Simmons is successfully working undercover with Hydra - quite a change from her undercover attempts in S1! IIRC, it was stated outside the show that the call Coulson takes in 2x01 (when he says "only use the dead drop from now on") was to from Simmons. And of course AoS has to toy with us for a bit before revealing she's undercover... 😆 We find out that Hydra engages in brainwashing - Donnie Gill, Creel (as we heard "compliance will be rewarded" last episode), and now Agent 33. Incidentally, the brainwashing techniques used by Dr Whitehall are meant to be a descendent of those used by Dr Fenhoff in Agent Carter S1 - we know that Hydra is aware of them from the S1 coda (though Agent Carter S1 didn't air until AoS S2's midseason break, it was in production around the same time, so there are a few cross references between the shows). The scene between Fitz and Ward is great - Iain does a superb job here. I also feel a sense of jeopardy once Fitz lowers the oxygen in the cell - there's a moment where it seems he's not really aware of what he's doing, and because we know that Fitz isn't doing well, there's a distinct chance that he could have accidentally killed Ward during his 'demonstration'. I like how Skye's progression is being handled - it's clear that from working with May she's becoming an very capable agent, but she's still got her character traits from S1, and the end scene shows that for all her progression, her search for her parents still has a big impact on her. Face My Enemy is a great episode - plot progression, character moments, a great fight sequence, lot's of humour. What's not to love? Whilst I said that 1x15 was the first instance of a step-up in fight choreography (which is true IMO), the May vs May fight is the first time where we really see what AoS is capable of putting together. It's ambitious on multiple levels - we've got some complicated sequences and camera moves, a few big show-off points, and it's not a short fight, plus there's VFX required to deal with the "May vs May"-ness of it all (and of course, Ming Na had to learn both sides of the fight) - but it comes off very well.

The “Widow’s veil” makes another appearance. Used previously by Natasha in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to impersonate a councilwoman, also in Black Widow when Natasha and Melina impersonated each other while infiltrating the red room. I believe Sharon Carter also uses it in the FATWS TV series as well.

Isaac A

Oh man. I can't watch this until tonight.
