Moon Knight: Episodes 4 - 6 ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

OK, I'm finally getting to this. I don't have time to watch as many full-length things as I come across (especially the movies), so I waited for the YT edits, but after I watched the first 3 eps in the YT edit, I wanted to see your reaction to the rest. Anyhoo, my history with Moon Knight, as a comic book reader, was that I always liked the look of him and was always so curious about him and some years back, I saw, at the Chicago ComiCon, some back issues of the most recent (at the time) run of Moon Knight and I bought the first issue to try to get in on the ground floor of a story since it would reintroduce the character to new readers. I couldn't find all the issues for the first year (12 issues), so I only read the first issue because I didn't have issue #2 and was waiting until I could get them all in order. Never really looked after that though. So, a couple of years before this series came out, I saw a video on Comics Explained about him in an even newer run of it and THAT run is what this series was obviously based on because before, he was always viewed as a hero/anti-hero with a troubled past who was pretty violent and would always be compared with Batman, but the new run really played with the concept that MAYBE Marc was not sane and that Moon Knight and Konshu and all that are just in his head and it would kept jumping to him in an asylum and that he had different personalities. I think he had something like 5 different personas? There was Steven, Marc, Jake, but a couple others including Mr. Knight who was the one that was, here, the look that Steven had when he'd summon the suit. Mr. Knight was a separate personality that was, like a "world's greatest detective" type of persona. Back in the old comics, those personas were just alter-egos that Marc would put on for different needs, like Jake Lockley was a cab driver and was very street-level who could get info just from being an unassuming cab driver that had questionably shady connections. Marc was the ex-mercenary and Steven was the millionaire playboy, I think. They were all still Marc, but he would just be different personas to move through society and get info and leads. So, when this series came out, I already did know that they'd established that he did have DID in the comics and that there was a possibility that it all MIGHT be in his head. Oh, and that Konshu is a bit of a dick. 😁 He's a god and his "mission" comes before all, so he doesn't care much about Marc (or people in general, as you see he tends to call people "little worm"), only in so much as how he can use him. He's basically a craftsman and Marc is his tool. So, he'll take care not to damage his tool, but if it does get broken beyond repair, he'll just get another tool. It was fun watching others react and try to unravel what is happening. I didn't know what was going to happen, just that they'd done a story that questioned whether he was sane or not and was very happy they adapted that. I'm sure they've probably collected that story in a trade paperback (I'm assuming). So, I think Oscar Isaac did a phenomenal job with this role. That 5th episode, "Asylum," just breaks me every time. I saw in an interview with him and Ethan Hawke that they were friends before and Oscar actually got Ethan to look at and consider doing this project with him. One other tidbit I knew was that the character of Moon Knight first appeared in the "Werewolf By Night" comic in the 70s and I believe my neighbor had it when (*ahem*) I was a kid. I remember seeing them fighting on the cover. I don't remember a story, but Moon Knight was the antagonist and the werewolf, if you can believe it, was the protagonist. I think I heard recently that Moon Knight was kinda just gonna be a throwaway character, but someone else thought they could do something with him. Pretty much EVERYONE I'd seen react to this had never even heard of the character and I'm glad so many people liked it. So, because he was kinda part of the horror line, he may show up in projects with a horror element in the future (like Blade or Dr. Strange or Werewolf by Night) 'cause Oscar Isaac did say he'd be willing to do more Moon Knight. Oh yeah, and Moon Knight's powers are linked to the moon, as you'd expect, and he is his strongest on nights of a full moon. It's why Konshu turned the sky to night and it was a full moon so Moon Knight could fly to Cairo. One commenter made me laugh after the 5th episode came out and said something like, Batman: I have such a tragic past. My parents were killed right in front of me. Moon Knight: Hold my beer...

Totally agree!

Many people I know seem to have accepted that the "egypt" part of this show is real and the "asylum" part is not, but I even after various rewatches genuinely cannot tell, because even anything we see that seemingly confirms one or the other might well have been in Marc's mind. And honestly I like that ambiguity. It's great, because in my opinion neither interpretation makes the show any less enjoyable or interesting. I really like this show.

Oh that's very interesting! I haven't been to Britain myself so all I know of the various accents is what I hear in media and from some online friends of mine (and certain people on YouTube and such). Thanks for sharing that!

I really loved this series a whole lot. What's interesting to me as a Brit. Is the idea that we give Oscar credit for his accent as Steven, is somewhat amusing. Largely because its foundation is a caricature from a film that he watched as a kid. Which we don't figure out until later. It doesn't bear enough precise resemblance to any regional dialect throughout the four countries. What Oscar is funnily enough doing is pretty spot on. What we would coin as a, 'Dick Van Dyke' Bert from Mary Poppins. Which is also a very tell tell sign that Steven is a manufacturered personality. If we are giving Oscar the full credit he is due, for the very thing, I think that he is doing.

Man after my 2nd watch and seeing you react especially episode 5, man that is a hard to watch episode seeing his past, I can see your eyes getting a little watery i think i know mine did. The acting from Oscar omg he deserved an award if he didnt get one. Over all I've reranked the disney MCU shows since Wanda vision came out and I would say this is top 2 for me with out spoiling anything I wont mention what I think is number 1 youll find out soon enough whats number 1 :) As always love the reactions

HIPPO!!! I love Steven! This was so much fun to revisit with you!!! This show was so much fun, and also an absolute heartbreaker at times. I am so happy you enjoyed it, there was only a tiny doubt that you might not. I thought maybe because of some of the more convenient and sometimes hard to follow action sequences and the plot driven less than intelligent henchman of Harrow. It was a bit distracting on my first watch. We saw a lot of this in the beginning of episode 4 with Layla and the guys in the truck. That was my main criticism of this series. I think if this show had the budget to make longer episodes, scenes like that could have been better executed. I was satisfied with only 6 episodes, just wanted more time per episode. Otherwise, I loved everything about this series and the new characters. I am hopeful that we get more of everyone in another season, or at least in other MCU projects. While this series does stand alone quite well, I love the ways it ties into the themes of the MCU, particularly those of the Multiverse Saga. All the characters we have encountered have had the struggle of accepting all aspects of one’s identity. Facing their past actions and traumas. The question of fate vs free will , the understanding of the very nature of free will and fate. The questions of one’s own reality and even time itself. Much like Loki having know idea how long he had been at the TVA, poor Marc & Steven never knowing how long they have been somewhere or how they got there in some cases. The nature of power and responsibility, I am really digging the way we are getting insight into these godlike beings. The Watcher, The Celestials, Actual Ancient gods, He Who Remains. Some of them see it as their responsibility to interfere with the lives of others, because they have the power to do so. Whereas others only wish to observe and feel that lesser beings should be left to their own devices. It’s all very fascinating.

Moon Knight & the Scarlett Scarab! Woohoo! 🤘🏼 So glad that you enjoyed this one - it’s such a fantastic dive into character. Anyway, check out the corresponding behind the scenes ASSEMBLED episode on Disney+ for this series. I think you’ll find it to be quite informative and very satisfying. 👍🏼

this has been my favorite show in phase four its so good Oscar Issac was amazing. When Steven is wearing the suit his name is Mr. Knight don't know if anyone told you also during the asylum parts Oscar I believe had his brother stand in when he's talking to Steven in front of him. I really hope for a season 2 too

The excitement you felt/shared in between episodes 5 and 6 is exactly how I felt about the show at that time. I feel they, unfortunately, didn't really stick the landing with the final episode, regressing back to the cookie-cutter Marvel formula of "big CGI boss battle". But this show has really great moments, a super interesting concept, a unique setting/soundtrack/vibe, and absolutely phenomenal acting by Oscar Isaac.

Onno Smits

So true. That belt...

The Dingo

Oh one additional fun factoid: Layla's superhero name is Scarlet Scarab

The Dingo

Each marvel series on Disney plus has a behind the scenes video that's about 30-40 minutes long. They are great watches after watching these series.

Jake was also in the unopened sarcophagus in the "hospital" that Marc and Steven don't open. I also think that there was another way to balance the scales - had they brought in Jake and there were 3 hearts, I think they would have balanced too (just my personal theory).

The Dingo

When you rewatch, pay attention to the fight scene on the rooftop in episode 3. Remember the part where those guys were suddenly so scared of Marc/Steven? Pay attention to the dialogue - neither Marc nor Steven knew what happened. That was Jake, who comes out when a situation is beyond what even Marc can handle.

The Dingo

If you like Fight Club, Shutter Island, Mr. Robot and this, then you need to watch LEGION, the FX Marvel series about a super powerful Mutant named David. The show doesn't connect to any other movie or timeline but it is so good. It references stuff from the Xmen comics but doesn't reference a particular movie. Super powerful mutants, insane asylum stuff, astral plain stuff, dance battles, and Twin Peaks surrealism. Noah Hawley of the Fargo series made it based on the comic.

Carl Johnson

The Hippo mentioned the Ancestral Plains, those are in Blank Panther where Tchalla saw his father. Also like Khonshu, Bast the Panther god from Black Panther is a member of the Egyptian Gods.

The asylum episode WRECKED me! Omg the feels
