Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Aftershocks + Who You Really Are [2x11 + 2x12] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Happy weekend everyone! Here's the watchalong for the episodes marking the halfway point of the season. I'm so invested in what's going on and what's to come. I can't wait for more and looking forward to your comments too! [Direct link here.]

Side note, I accidentally cropped weird in editing so you'll see a slight sliver of the episode on the right hand side of the video, so sorry!

Cheers,

Some interesting things about Sif. In the movies since Thor the dark world she has not had any appearances except a timeloop self in Loki season 1. So it is great to see her get more development here. If you notice Fitz being able to Fix Skye's watch shows vast improvement in his precision with his hand and his speaking has gotten better as well. As people have mentioned Strucker and List are heads you have seen in the movies specifically the end credit of Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron. This episode basically explains why they were the only ones of Hydra left by the time the Avengers caught up to them. Coulson made the others kill each other.

I really like these episodes, the things happening with Skye and how Fitz reacts are so great! I wish they didn't shoehorn in them killing 5 heads of HYDRA though. HYDRA is such a big threat in the show, and them killing 5 heads in one brilliant move by Coulson should have been an epic moment, but it gets a bit lost in between all the other big reveals. All we now know to be left of HYDRA are: - Baron Von Strücker (whom is mentioned a lot but has only appeared in the movies up to this point, he created "The Twins" (Wanda and Pietro)) - His sidekick Dr. List (whom appears both in the movies and a lot in this show) - Sunil Bakshi (whom is now in S.H.I.E.L.D./US Army custody) - and perhaps Ward (if you can still count him as being HYDRA)

And ya know, "truncheon" IS a funny word.

Two very big learning episodes you get to learn a tad about Skyes mom and the background of the Kree's involvement of wanting to weaponize humans as an army for their bidding. The spygate in the background with Bobbi and Mac planning something this whole time ending with Hunter getting knocked out... Fitz being the champion stepping in being the big bro and helping Skye and understanding whats shes going thrugh and also helping Mac with his issues, while losses trust with Simmons :( All this almost makes you forget they took down most of hydras top heads as well !

Incidentally there's a deleted scene from 2x12 on the Bus between Fitz and Skye that's worth watching - I don't know if deleted scenes are available on Disney+, and I don't think they're available on YT anywhere (also there are deleted scenes from episodes in S2 you haven't seen, so be careful if looking). The AoS bloopers are also good fun, but the ones floating around on YT are compilations from S1-4 IIRC - not sure if the single season versions are available anywhere (other than the Blu-rays)

As a first time watcher, think bobby and mac work for/with the US general. (forgot his name) As a way for him to keep an eye on collson.

Two really good episodes to start the second half of the season, and for different reasons - Aftershocks is (mostly) a "let's slow down and take a breather" episode, and Who You Really Are gives us a lot of info on what has been driving the main season plot thus far, though we still get quite a bit of action and (a little) expansion on some of the other threads that have been started. As has been noted before AoS is quite good at dropping info throughout the season, but still (as a number of reactor's I've seen have commented) manages to move things along a bit faster than you might expect (e.g. Fitz and Skye's secret lasting less than an episode) Fitz's "You're just different now, and there's nothing wrong with that" is a highlight of the episode IMO - it's a lovely way to comfort Skye, who's clearly freaking out about what's happened to her (rightfully so), and as you noted a reflection on Fitz himself. It's also interesting to see May's interactions with Skye over these episodes. We've seen a few times now that Coulson is Skye's surrogate father, but we get the strongest indication yet that May is her surrogate mother - she's very concerned about Skye injuring herself whilst in quarantine, instantly moves to protect Skye from Sif and Vin-Tak (even though she has no hope of actually stopping either by herself), and tries to help Skye calm down and regain control in a much softer way than we usually see. We do (sort of) know where one of the other Diviners is - we see the teleporter handle one in the post-credit scene of 2x10 (the "there's someone new" moment)
