The Drop (2014) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

It is so funny how that timing worked out. I initially picked this film to introduce you to Noomi and because it was James Gandolfini's final role before he died, and Tom Hardy was the chocolate syrup on the ice cream LOL but the ODDS of there being a pit puppy in this film and you adopt a pit-terrier is too funny. That's the cherry on top, I guess! Anyway, so Noomi's first American film was Prometheus, which had to be daunting for her, Ridley Scott wanting a non-English speaker to be a main character in his movie. So she started getting approached for other movies after gaining attention with that and met Tom Hardy during that whole process and became fast friends. For two years they looked for a movie to do together and finally The Drop was...ahem...dropped in their laps. They did another movie together but...who knows...maybe that'll be another request down the road :) It might be about time to circle back to some more Audrey next time around. Another fun fact, the legend around Saint Rocco is that a dog brought Rocco food while he was sick with the plague, so he's remembered as the patron saint of dogs :) Also the screenplay was written by Dennis Lehane who wrote the book Shutter Island! The way Tom Hardy talks in this kind of reminds me of how he talks in Venom. It's his trying to be Brooklyn and trying to be typical New Yorker voices mixed into one. I think the Stranger Things guy was named Benny in the show. He was also in a fantastic show called This Is Us. He's still on the level of "oh that guy!" actors but he does have range. I can't blame Nadia for reacting the way she did about her ex. If someone I basically just started becoming friends with asked me if I knew someone who was my ex, I wouldn't want to relive that shit either. But Eric basically making it the dog or Nadia was such a dick move. But, when it comes to Tom Hardy and who he cares about, fuck around and find out. Marv warned him. The most heartbreaking part is Nadia's trauma surfacing. She truly didn't believe Bob was going to let her go and trying to make promises that she won't talk... I have to imagine she must have been having flashbacks in that moment of Eric towering over her and she's begging to be let go. Noomi is so good with trauma roles. I hope that doesn't have to do with anything in her personal life, I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on anybody but man can she sell it. Bob's speech toward the end gives me chills every time I hear it. Killing Whelan is something he thinks he's damned for and maybe that's why he doesn't take communion. Because he doesn't feel like there's a point. God's not going to let him in. Maybe protecting Nadia and Rocco will make up for that.
