Dark: Secrets [1x01] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review
Added 2024-08-22 00:45:00 +0000 UTC
Hello there! This reaction is available as part of my "Try Before You Buy" reaction videos here on Patreon. For the TV series that I react to at the Insiders tiers, I give the first episode out for free so you can experience it with me and see if you're up for joining us to continue! You must have your own copy of the episodes to watchalong as I do blur the episodes and have the audio muted. I leave a few seconds of it up at the start of each episode for syncing purposes. I am not allowed to distribute the entire episodes in my videos as this is illegal. Thank you for watching along with me!

Hello everyone! NEW SERIES TIME (new to me) with Dark and I feel like I say this with every new show at this point, but I truly am pretty hooked and intrigued by what we've been presented with in this first episode. Love a good mystery! [Direct link here.]
Thank you so much for watching along with me! I'm so looking forward to your comments and thoughts!

1899 was created by the same German couple that made Dark, which makes me severely disappointed that they cancelled 1899 after one season. I still want to watch it, especially since one of the actors in 1899 is also in Dark. But I just need to get myself in that mindset of "The story will be unresolved, and not have a satisfying closure like Dark did." 😂
I pulled up a Dark episode once with English dubs turned on (with English subtitles) and yeah, I couldn't make it more than a few minutes. Not just because of the issue that you mentioned where the spoken words are a bit different from what the subtitles show, but for me I noticed the complete lack of emotional delivery from the people who are doing the dub. The German actors have a ton of passion with these characters at many moments throughout the series that really comes through in their voice. Your comment doesn't make it totally clear if you are watching with the original German audio, but I would strongly recommend it if you are able to.

Thanks for this one! I started episode one back in 2022 but couldn't get past the dubbed voices or it confusing me a bit at first. Your reactions during the show made it easier for me to get through. I am excited to see where it goes! I realized part of my issue was the incongruity of the English dub and the subtitles. So I am trying to just ignore the subtitles. I like how Netflix has a bunch of this kinda of dark (pun intended) genre shows: The OA (2019) & 1899 (2022) are some of my favorites but those didn't get to finish their stories. Others that also share some, but not always all, of this gritty, dark, supernatural, Sci-Fi, and mysterious style on other platforms that I think are amazing are Devs (2020 from FX), Silo (Ongoing from Apple TV), and the most recent season of True Detective, subtitled Night Country (2024 HBO). I think anyone that digs this show would get something out of all those shows. Also, I think the show Devs is criminally underrated.

So excited that you're reacting to this. I think taking notes post-episodes is a good plan. When I first watched the series, I re-watched the first episode and started writing names down before watching ep2. One of the first Dark fans I met went on an unprovoked rant about how it was nothing like Stranger Things. But I definitely see comparisons and parallels.

This is my first time watching this show and I know zero about it so this should be fun.

This is the most underrated Netflix series. It does the best job ever of explaining time travel and all the ramifications and complexities of it as well. Complete mind fuck!

I've seen season 1 three times. It's still a mindfuck. Great to also experience a different perspective on themes that are somewhat similar but different than our own.

You've heard the opening theme song before. German Musician Apparat. I came to know of him after hearing this same song in Breaking Bad when Gus is sitting in the car before going into the nursing home.

Yeah the way they shoot the cave gives no doubt there's something sinister about it. I have a fear of dark places. I don't like to be totally in the dark. So caves have always been terrifying to me.

Love this show! You did a great job following along with the dialogue while still giving your reactions. Yeah this show can get confusing and making a list of characters and their relationships can help a lot. I would advise you to do it on your own though while watching (or editing) and not look them up as even that could contain major spoilers for the show. There are a lot of comparisons to Stranger Things and Lost as those shows always seemed to leave more questions than answers in each episode. Can't wait to journey down this road once more!!

This is a first-time watch for me as well and I have to say, it's already intriguing. The atmosphere, the characters, the richness of the dialogue... it's so unique.
The first shot of Winden Cave as the camera approaches it gave me chills for some reason... like it wasn't necessarily evil but everything in me was telling me to run. I get that feeling sometimes watching thassalophobia vids on youtube when the camera pans down to look into the dark abyss of the ocean. Maybe there's a connection there. Maybe I'm afraid of what's IN the dark. Interesting!
By episode's end, I can say THIS is why I love foreign films. I'm not saying America doesn't produce great films or that other countries only ever make great films, but there's just something about the richness of the storytelling and they're not afraid to have dark themes and dark endings. They're not obsessed with having a happy turnout like a lot of American media is. IMO foreign media, when it takes itself seriously, is much more real and unapologetic than American film. I'm definitely looking forward to discovering more as we go along and figuring out this mystery!

I feel like that Jonah Hill meme where he's screaming. YES! I now have to finish work so I can go rewatch this episode and your reaction.
