I love the depiction of PTSD in this film. The memories becoming hallucinations, the nightmares, the panic attacks and anxiety that comes out of nowhere... And then the sheer panic and anger that comes with the realization you're being forced to do it all over again only this time against people that are just as good and smart and skilled as you are. Jennifer Lawrence doesn't get enough credit for her performance in this series.
Is Effie just fabulous no matter where she is? Elizabeth Banks plays her so perfectly. She's like a cross between her Pitch Perfect character and, well, basically herself LOL
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. He was such an incredible actor and such a troubled man. I suppose most geniuses are.
Haymitch explaining to Katniss that she has to get used to things and be part of the show speaks volumes to why he's an alcoholic. Not only his own PTSD but the fact that he's a mentor hence he's been part of the show for years too and he hates himself for it.
Wes Bentley's cool and all but I'm glad we got Plutarch Heavensbee. He's not as obviously evil and rides that line so well that it's not until the end that we realize he's just been part of the show too. The Capitol having enemies on the inside biding their time was such a brilliant reveal, set up, and cliffhanger.
Any time someone says "you know how I feel about you" and avoids reciprocation is never a good sign. Katniss was dealing with a lot in her mind but her heart was just as divided. I mean, seriously, who would you rather have? Dollar General Hemsworth or the security guard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria who happens to own a Zathura game? Choice is pretty clear right?
Gale's a good guy, though. He's brave and stood up for people getting attacked by PKs. He took that whipping like a champ and was ready to fight for what he felt was right. He admittedly is a champ and deserves happiness with someone that isn't conflicted inside and appreciates him.
I love that even Effie was upset and trying not to get choked up when she called Katniss's name. You can tell she came to care about them moreso than other tributes. Katniss being the only female survivor and Haymitch being the only other male survivor speaks volumes. She never got close to anyone because they never survived. But Katniss and Peeta did and now it's like being the one sending your best friends the draft letter.
Jena Malone (Joanna) is such a beast. Admittedly developed a bit of a crush on her after this film. No, it's not because of the elevator scene! She's got such a take-no-shit attitude and she looks like she doesn't let anyone give her grief. She's the very definition of 'Try it, bitch'.
Can't help but wonder... obviously no one could know Katniss would fire that arrow but was Cesar playing both sides? Just that little line "we'll never see anything like this again". Like, I'd think most people in the audience would expect to live another 25 years, unless he knew the revolution was going to start and this would be the final Quarter Quell... plus he legit looked pissed when he thought Katniss was pregnant. Did I just misread that whole scene?
President Snow reminds me of me when I was a teenager. "Oh, look, they're holding hands. I want them dead." Of course, I wasn't serious, I hadn't figured out how awesome alone time was yet!
Sinna's death(?) is so tragic and the fact they purposefully waited until Katniss was in the elevator when she couldn't do anything but watch was such a shitty thing to do! They wanted to shake her up but all they really did was piss her off. What's the saying? Don't wound what you can't kill?
How crazy would it be if we shot an arrow into the sky and found out we were under a force field? Flat earthers would have a field day.
Kinda funny how Catching Fire did The Fog better than the actual remake did.
Mags' death always guts me. She knew Peeta couldn't make it and she knew Finnick couldn't carry both of them. Walking into that Fog must have been agonizing but she had to save her boy.
Okay, I gotta know - would you rather face Tracker Jackers or those damn Howler Monkeys? Jabberjays can fuck right off. I'm schizoaffective so a flock of those bad mamma jammas would literally drive me insane. They'd drive anyone insane. I'll take my chances with the monkeys.
I love the moment when Snow realizes he's been betrayed. The shock on his face like 'this can't happen to me, I'm the president!' The Matrix has been compromised, now let's take out The Machine.
I saved this part until last so anyone reading can skip it if they wish. I remember you saying you've watched Black Mirror and this entry reminded me a lot of the season 1 episode with Daniel Kaluuya. (Spoiler warning if anyone reading hasn't seen the show)
The episode where he has to run on a treadmill day after day for coin, saves up and spends it all on a girl he likes to go to a talent competition. Basically it's the only way out, they decide if you're fame worthy or if you have to go run the rest of your life. What reminded me of this was the show the mentors have had to put on all this time. You put on the show, you stay comfortable and loved in the Capitol. You don't put on the show, you get put right back with the grunts or killed even. Anyway, very loose connection but that was in the back of my mind for basically the first hour.
Catching Fire is my absolute favorite of the series however they are all amazing and I look forward to the next entry! I hope you plan on doing the prequel as well. Can't wait to discuss that one!

Yeah, this one is probably my favorite...just good world expansion, higher stakes, great cast (once upon a time, adding Phlilp Seymour Hoffman made everything better...*sob*). Like a sequel should be. The scene where they kill Cinna gets me everytime...who knew Lenny Kravitz could make me care as an actor? Good shit.
