I saw it in the theater and I didn't know what it was going to be about, exactly, before we saw it but I was a fan of sci-fi (so was my mom), UFOs and horror and this hit all of those 'cause the first half had a lot of horror elements, so for me, it was a bit of a mystery and was very awe-filled at the end when I saw that it wasn't something scary and bad. It actually put in the minds of the collective that aliens coming here might not be to INVADE and DESTROY us. About people saying that it was boring, it has the pace of the time. Movies in the 70s took their time and let scenes and concepts sit. Things have gotten MUCH more fast-paced since then. I have to remind myself of the pacing when I watch a movie from the 60s or 70s (and early 80s, think Blade Runner) where the build-up is slower and by today's standards, can be viewed as meandering. But, getting in that mode of movie-watching makes me more nostalgic and calm.

I first watched this about a month after it opened at Mann's Hastings Ranch in Pasadena, CA. It was the best time to be alive. You got to watch this and Star Wars in the theaters, oh wow.

Steven Spielberg's directorial premiere was one of the first three episodes of Rod Serling's the Night Gallery, kind of a creepy/horror version of the Twilight Zone. It's a shame few ask for a reaction to that classic series.

Also, worth mentioning that there was a whole UFO thing happening in the 70s and this, in a way, felt like the culmination of that.

So I saw this in the theater in 1977. I was a kid who loved aliens and UFOs, so I really enjoyed this movie even if I did find it kind of scary. I still feel like it’s one of Spielberg’s best right up there with Jaws, Raiders, and Jurassic Park. I might even put it at the top of my list. It certainly seems to be one of the most personal films he’s ever made despite it being a sprawling special effects film. This one he made for himself, and it shows. I know I was a fan of this film early on because I still have a pack of Close Encounters bubble gum trading cards that I probably bought at 7-11. One of the few other films I collected trading cards for besides this one was, of course, Star Wars.
