Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

There is one line that Thor says in this movie that is my #2 Thor line of all time, right behind the "Son of Coul" line. 😉 Watch to find out! Looking forward to your comments on this! [Direct link here.]

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

Since I left this comment, I have also started watching "Moon Knight" and I think that also has significantly worse effects than L&T. The whole first episode sequence in the cupcake truck might rank as the worst computer work in the whole MCU for me.

Tyler Foster

Natalie has always been great as Jane. This film was def no exception, especially considering those ARMS! 💪

kaiielle

Yeah it seems like a lot of people feel the same way about this film. Thanks for using my reaction to watch the movie for the first time! Is there anything you're looking forward to coming up?

kaiielle

Totally understand your thoughts! Not sure if you watched yet, but if you did I hope you enjoyed the reaction at least!

kaiielle

😂😂

kaiielle

A vulnerable Chris Hemsworth portrayal is always welcomed. Completely agreed with you on Quill, especially since y'all know I don't reaaally care for him all that much (at this point anyway). I hope Thor returns as well. Earlier someone said Chris wants a more serious Thor movie, hopefully we get something that feels like another Thor (2011). I would love that. And I also love that he is a father now and did similar to what his father did. We love to see it.

kaiielle

I started going back through the MCU and the difference between Phase One Thor and current Thor is like Disney and DreamWorks. One's fun but smart and the other's just stupid and toilet humor.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

The outfits ARE very good! You know, I didn't even fully grasp the cosmic stuff properly because I just felt kinda blegh from the humour and tonal whiplash. Kind of unfortunate, but I do appreciate you pointing all that out for me!

kaiielle

I hope Chris can make that happen! I want another Thor (2011) vibe again! The goats will always be annoying to me. 😂 That said, gonna rewatch with the Korg perspective in mind, and it might help me enjoy it a bit more.

kaiielle

That's exactly what it felt like and I'm glad I wasn't the only one annoyed by the goats. 2010 YouTube humour is completely accurate.

kaiielle

Yes we did!

kaiielle

When I rewatch, I'll def be keeping the Korg perspective in mind, it will probably help me enjoy it a smidge more.

kaiielle

Always surprising me! I def think and would rewatch The Dark World any day.

kaiielle

Honestly wouldn't have even been upset by Jane replacing Thor! Since we're in that era of new heroes replacing older ones. It's gonna be a trip rewatching the first Thor movie LMAO. I can't wait for how different Thor will feel compared to this movie. It is a bit of a disappointment, for sure.

kaiielle

Okay that explanation makes sense, thank you!

kaiielle

Oh man great point, I agree that the theme of that was definitely buried under weird comedy and tone.

kaiielle

Completely agree. In a parallel universe, there is a Thor: Love and Thunder where the movie takes itself seriously.

kaiielle

Feel free to wait a few weeks for the edited version! But yes totally understand why rewatching this would feel like a chore. Anxiety whiplash is a great way of putting it.

kaiielle

Ahhh, I probably should have taken Korg's narrating a bit more seriously, or perhaps the movie made that a *bit* more clear? When this gets edited, I'll keep that perspective in mind and it might make me enjoy it slightly more. Slightly. 😅

kaiielle

Thanks for the rant! Agreed, Gorr doing more butchering would have been nice, but the rest of the movie would have needed less weird comedy to match up.

kaiielle

This is the 2nd time I’ve watched this movie. Originally saw it in theaters when it released. Immediately came away thinking it was the worst MCU film of them all. I wasn’t as invested in Gorr as everyone else but I did think Natalie Portman basically stole the show. She was bad ass.

boss435

This was my first watch of this movie. You've reached the parts of the MCU that I haven't seen yet. I was watching a bunch of reactors react to the MCU, plus trying to keep up with the movies and series myself, and I eventually got kind of sick of superhero movies, so even though we own this one and several more, I never bothered to watch them. Personally, I'm conflicted about this movie. I don't mind the comedy so much. Some of it made me laugh out loud. The movie starts out with Korg starting to tell a story, and ends with Korg finishing the story, so if you look at it in the context of him telling the story, which I think was the intent, the silliness is a little less jarring. That's how we end up with Thor holding two vehicles apart by doing a split. Not because he actually did it, but because Korg is embellishing the fight. The problem for me isn't so much the comedy itself, but that the most interesting plotlines (Jane Foster dealing with cancer and Gorr's quest to destroy the gods) deserve a darker and more serious tone than to have Korg telling the story with ridiculous embellishments. You're absolutely right about tonal inconsistency. I didn't notice the black and white effects to be problematic, but I am watching on a small screen, and I couldn't stop thinking that certain parts of those scenes reminded me of "Sin City." If you know, you know. I enjoyed the large amount of Guns n Roses in the movie, at least. I wouldn't rate this movie as low as "Thor: The Dark World," but it does fall into the lower bits of my rankings because the tone didn't fit right.

BubblyRainbows

(commenting before i watch the reaction because i cant stop myself lol) this movie was such a mixed bag for me, i adored Gorr, his plot line and how it tied into Jane's (which i loved too), i even loved the way it ended, there were also so many awesome moments, but its marred by just some of the dumbest humor and tone deaf jokes, like ahhh, yes, the people who watch their home get destroyed only to see half their remaining people butchered by Thanos along with Loki who just helped save them, then watch their king wallow in sorrow because of that event, yea those people would 100% have a "infinity cone" ice cream shop >.> i think what others have said strikes true, the wrong lessons were learnt from Ragnarok. its like 2 movies mashed together, a really cool and emotional movie about Gorr and Jane, awesome actions and good story, and a weird comedy that cant decide on tone, that keeps changing the world to fit its jokes. ill edit once i get a chance to watch this again this week with my thoughts to see how they change, but i dont think they will

Thor’s “RIP LOKI” back tattoo is EVERYTHING! 💚🗡️🐍💚🐊🗡️💚

CheshireKat528

“Yeah, I prefer Dark World.” I have a love/hate relationship with Ragnarok, so I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this movie all that much, and I was right. Being a fan of Dark World, I know all too well what it’s like to have a movie you enjoy be “the worst” so I will focus on what I enjoyed in this movie. Also, I agree with 95% of what you said about what you didn’t enjoy. I wanted so much more of almost everyone! Thor & Jane have always been my favorite romance of the MCU, seeing them reunited was great! I have been a Natalie Portman fan since I was 13, and always enjoy watching her work. I always thought she and Hemsworth had great chemistry, the hospital scene where Thor tells Jane he loves her and that he has always loved her, really hit me in the feels. As much as I agree that Hemsworth has a natural talent for comedy, I enjoy his acting more when we see his vulnerable side. The catch in his throat in the hospital scene reminded me of Infinity War “What more could I loose.” I enjoyed the extremely limited amount of Darcy & Erik we got. Kat Dennings & Stellan Skarsgård are always a win! I enjoyed seeing Lady Sif, and having Jamie Alexander back was awesome, but it was so bittersweet considering we got less than 10 minutes of her. She had a bigger impact in Loki as a memory, but I digress, it was nice to see her training Axl at the end. I enjoyed the relationship between Valkyrie and Jane very much. Imagine a Jane, Darcy, & Valkyrie girls night, 😔 we may never see it. I like when Thor tells Valkyrie that he was fine with being “properly naked” when she suggests he was “properly humiliated” There was some discourse around that scene when the trailer and movie came out. Hemsworth was comfortable with the scene, so far as I know, and I like that they acknowledge it in the film. I enjoyed Bale, he isn’t a must see actor for me, but his performance was solid here, and certainly a standout presence in this movie, as a villain should be. I don’t know that I needed more of him, but I enjoyed every scene he was in and I can’t say the same for everyone else, except maybe Natalie, but that could just be my inner teen crushing on her 😊 I enjoyed the Shadow World scenes & fight and thought it looked great. I enjoyed most of the fight scenes, maybe not the opening one at the temple so much. Speaking of that scene, I enjoyed the limited presence of the GOTG. Their movies are low in my MCU rankings, but I have always loved their interactions with other characters and it was nice to see more familiar characters. I really enjoyed Quill being a more serious & mature Captain, rather than another pissing contest between him and Thor. I really enjoyed the idea of expanding on storylines that involve gods and the afterlife in the MCU. We have seen these ideas touched on and visualized in Black Panther, Moon Knight, Eternals, & possibly Endgame. We have now seen 3 afterlife realms for sure, 4 if you count the Soul Stone realm where we saw child Gamora, but that’s up for interpretation. I like the slow build up and hope they continue to explore these themes and characters in more dramatic ways. What I enjoyed most about this movie was how we left Thor. I LOVE that he adopted the child of his enemy, just like his Father before him. I love the idea of Thor being a Father, I think it will give Hemsworth a chance to highlight his goofy side while enhancing his vulnerability as a character in ways we haven’t seen before, 🤞🤞they use this storyline to it’s full potential moving forward. Thor will return? I hope so.

CheshireKat528

While I'm sure One Million Moms had those complaints, I would still not be shocked if some groups of people complained about the other stuff too.

Tyler Foster

The irony is, what you listed as pushing the envelope isn't what some groups held against it. the One Million Moms organization for instance was against Thor 4 for its "chief queer themes". I guess the insinuation of Jesus partaking in an orgy of the gods is more acceptable than gay rock creatures. "Christians" make me laugh sometimes, they really do. No intended offense, as I consider myself a Christian as well, just not one of these wackadooodles running around today.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

First off, a massive shout out to the costume designer on this, because Mighty Thor's and Valkyrie's outfits in this are *chef's kiss* comic hero garb. This is especially meaningful in the face of all the post-production issues this had re: Covid. Secondly, yes there was a definite issue with tonal whiplash, but I can forgive ALL given Bale's fantastic performance and the fact that this takes us deeper into the Cosmic side of Marvel, which we'd only gotten to dip our toes into with Ego, the End Of Time stuff in Loki, and then the Eternals movie. The fact that Celestials make a couple of appearances, and then we got to see Eternity? Love it. Fantastic. Fingers crossed they continue to delve even deeper into this world and get to see the movie versions of some more "out there" entities.

Nestor Custodio

That outfit is also at least in some part a homage to the look of the main character in John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China.

Tyler Foster

For me this is i think my 3rd full watch, and i've seen atleast 2-3 shorter reactions. I think the movie might grow on you the more you watch it in some ways, the first time I saw it I thought the goats were the best part of the movie lol. This time around I honestly think if they would have just kept the darker tone throughout the movie with more sadness and love it would been 10x better, didnt care for the Korg goofy stuff to much. Gor was meant to be a very dark and evil character hence the God Butcher If I'm not mistaken Chris Hemsworth is asking for or wanting a darker or more serious take on Thor 5 cause of the backlash from this movie.

Chris Elkins

Yeahhh this one was rough, this is a textbook definition of a swing and a miss imo. I totally agree with you when you say Gorr didn’t fit with this movie, the whole film just felt tonally inconsistent. I also feel Taikka learnt the wrong lessons from Ragnarok, most people loved that film because it balanced the humour and seriousness perfectly, whereas in this movie it feels like Taikka thought to himself “people loved the humour in Ragnarok so I’m gonna crank that up to 100” and it completely fell flat to me. The screaming goats were the worst part for me, didn’t laugh the first time and that never changed, I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to put 2010 YouTube humour in a 2022 movie, completely baffling.

Sean H

Lady Sif returns to the Thor films. Chronologically we last saw her as altered memory torturing Loki in season 1 episode 4 of Loki but we last saw the real her in Agents of Shield after Thor the dark world bringing a kree back to Hala.

Christopher simeon

So I probably enjoy this movie more than most people, but it's definitely flawed. There's a lot of tonal whiplash, and the stories (there are a couple of different arcs) adapted from the comics to make this movie are definitely far more serious in their original format. I'm totally fine with Thor being a comedic character, or having straight up comedy movies/series in the MCU, but I don't think these were the stories to adapt for one. All that said, I just learned to embrace the silliness and camp of it all, but yeah, I can appreciate that it's not for everyone. And yes, going with the Korg's perspective/unreliable narrator theory helps a lot (pretty sure it's how it's meant to be interpreted). And just because it's a horrible character trait of mine, some fun facts: Thor's look in the opening battle is based on the character Thunderstrike in the comic. Eric Masterson would 'host' Thor in his body for a time. When they were separated, Eric would go on to become a Thor adjacent hero who went by the name Thunderstrike. If Gorr's shadow powers/creatures look vaguely familiar that may be because they come from the Necrosword which, in the comics, is a proto-symbiote, and is related to the Symbiotes Venom and Carnage...

Phalanx

Just finished watching this for the first time, and (perhaps this is what you meant when you said I diverge from the majority, since in this case the majority thought this movie was awful), I thought it was perfectly enjoyable. Short of a B+ but certainly a B for me. I'd rank it slightly over Ragnarok because I really like the Jane character and was glad to see her back, and I definitely think it's miles away from the worst Thor movie, which for me is still The Dark World -- not just the worst Thor but also bottom 5 MCU, if not bottom 3. (That ranking includes the visual effects, although frankly, I also think your assessment of the look of the black-and-white sequence may have had more to do with the compromised quality of streaming video versus disc -- discs can provide in the realm of 10x as much video quality, and I was watching a 4K disc on a 4K television.) What's kind of funny is that even though I thought it was pretty good and you seemed to think it was pretty bad, we had basically the same impression of the movie. Humor was mostly a shrug to me, really liked Jane even though the introduction to her becoming Thor was a bit rushed, and thought Bale's villain was the best part of the movie. Only thing I don't agree on, aside from the quality of the effects, is the idea that this was because the movie was kid-friendly; I actually thought this one was kind of pushing the envelope on what Marvel was allowed to do with the PG-13. A young girl starving to death in the desert, the violent murder of various gods, including Sif getting her arm chopped off, children kidnapped by shadow creatures, talk of orgies, etc. My guess is that parents probably actually objected to the movie's content. Also, in keeping with what you said about my taste: I saw Jojo Rabbit at a really advanced test screening almost a year before it actually opened and I thought it was fine. Not terrible, not great, just fine. It opened, and two things happened: general audiences *loved* it, and quite a few more hardcore film nerds *hated* it, to the point where Waititi's name is poison to them. I still have a pretty middling opinion, although in the reaction circles I'd definitely come off more like a hater because of how glowing the reviews are. I also can't say I loved his What We Do in the Shadows either. The one I'd go to bat for, the only one I would passionately argue in favor of, is the lesser-seen 2016 film Hunt For the Wilderpeople. Still definitely has a streak of that Waititi humor you're not so fond of, but that's his gem, IMO.

Tyler Foster

There was some good in this film. We have Jane's story, we have Gorr's story. Unfortunately, we also have Thor's story. As much as I loved the Guns N Roses soundtrack and the big showdown set against November Rain, I feel like Thor's side of the story was ultimately unnecessary. I feel like this would have been a great opportunity to have Gorr kill off Thor and Jane's Mighty Thor becoming the new Thor. What's more unexpected to a God Butcher than a God's rebirth? Christian Bale was perfect as Gorr. He has the intensity and the darkness but ultimately I feel that Bale and the character were both wasted. Taika has been a rising name in comedy, both dry and kooky, but this was just a mess. It's pretty easy to tell when a director cares and when they don't. Jojo Rabbit and What We Do in the Shadows are two prime examples of when Taika does something great. Thor Ragnarok was a fun movie and a lot was right about it, but it was pretty clear that's all it was, a fun way to get a big paycheck. Love and Thunder was Ragnarok's humor cranked up to 11 and its payoffs ripped to a bare minimum. Gorr's loss and mission and ending mirrored with Jane's cancer story all should have been so much more meaningful and impactful. But I guess the money's better if you get Chris Hemsworth to show his ass. Where's the Thor from Avengers? "You threaten the world I love for your imagined slights?" Instead we have a Thor that's been reduced to the hot, dumb blonde trope. I'm not sure the Thor we have now could even speak in a Shakespearean way. He can barely get a simple sentence out. Pretty sad when Peter Quill is the smart one and he's not even in the movie very long. I won't go so far as to say I hated Love and Thunder. I don't hate it, I'm not even mad, I'm just disappointed. Disappointed in Taika because I know he can do better, and disappointed in whoever ultimately approved the script and the finished product. Bob Iger's whole quality over quantity mission is looking really good right now.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Also there's a Zeus deleted scene that is better than the entire movie.

Carl Johnson

I love that the reason Jane can use Mjolnir is because Thor enchanted, asking it to protect her. And as soon as she finds out the chemo is working, it calls to her. About the shadow realm, they actually lit that with multiple strobe lights and high speed cameras. True shadows are black, not semi black like in most movies. This being the shadow realm, it makes sense to actually black. In a tech article they said they were going for the inverse of light. Instead of beams of light, it was beams of shadow.

Carl Johnson

The film touched on the dual nature of Jane's and Gorr's fate. He put his faith in gods who didn't answer his prayers. Jane put her faith in science which also let her down. Both of them end up seeking salvation in weapons that give them strength, and are also killing them. But the film's tone was so off that you wouldn't notice that. So the theme of the film gets lost. If the humor would have been pulled back, the film could of been one of the best comic book films ever.

Carl Johnson

SHE REALLY DID

kaiielle

Christian Bale kills in this movie (as he does most movies) and I enjoy his characters arc very much. However, this is definitely a tale of 2 movies and one of those movies is way too goofy and ruins the vibe.

RichieRich

The big open question of that movie: Is Lady Sifs arm really in Valhalla?

Boerben

I'd like to know your reaction to this, but don't really want to rewatch the whole movie. "Thor: The Dark World" was my least favorite MCU movie for a long time, but Endgame gave me a new perspective on it and I like it now. Don't love it, but I can at least rewatch it. I haven't been able to for this, as much as I really like the actors and characters. Just way too much goofiness. Glad to see Lady Sif again and loved Jane as The Mighty Thor and Christian Bale as Gor, but I mainly feel they should've stuck with Jane's Mighty Thor cancer story or Gor's story and gave them both the WEIGHT those stories deserve. The concept of Eternity was basically turned into a wishing well rather than the powerful cosmic entity that would make it something interesting. There's a lot of things that I really did like in the movie, but feel the comedy undercut any sort of drama that all of those situations were asking us to care about. I would start to get drawn into the seriousness of the situation and sadness of Gor or Jane and they would undercut it. I got anxiety whiplash where I'd start to get anxious when something very serious and heavy was happening 'cause I'd be expecting to have the rug pulled out from under me with a joke and it did almost every time & when it didn't, I didn't connect with it 'cause I was expecting it to be undercut and was keeping it at arm's length. I think it may have been the Blindwave guys that said the best part for them was seeing Brett Goldstein as Hercules 'cause they loved him so much in Ted Lasso, but when I saw this in the theater, I hadn't seen Ted Lasso yet, so I liked the idea of introducing Hercules but had no excitement for the actor especially. But, if the best thing you like about a movie is its epilogue, that says something.

Thadman

And my favorite character was Jane’s biceps. Girl got ripped for this one 😂

Ray H

I saw this in the theater when it opened, and I was just happy to see a Marvel movie tbh. It’s a shame they wasted an awesome villain and good performance by Christian Bale. One neat thing dunno if you saw it, but Love is Chris Hemsworth’s daughter, India Rose Hemsworth.

Ray H

Well, I finished the rewatch now, and it seems like you and me had pretty much the exact same first-watch experience and opinions on the movie. "Thor will return... Will he now?" Yeah, I doubt it. I don't think anyone wants that anymore now, not even Chris Hemsworth. There's a fan theory that this whole movie is over-the-top ridiculous because it's from the perspective of Korg telling it to a bunch of children, and I like to think of it like that. That way I don't have to literally put it in the same universe as, say, Captain America: Winter Soldier. JoJo Rabbit is great, please don't be dissuaded from keeping that on your list.

Onno Smits

Fixed - thanks!

kaiielle

"I want the rest of the movie to fit with this villain." Holy shit, that is sooooo accurate.

Onno Smits

So, things I love about this movie: the return of Jane Foster (as Thor!); Christian Bale as Gorr the god butcher (one of my all-time favorite actors--and motherfucking Batman, for fuck's sake--having a ball as a big time villain); the return of Lady Sif (for like two seconds); Valkyrie (she's all over this movie, and still somehow underused); and Brett Goldstein as Hercules (moslty just because I love him in 'Ted Lasso'); and, of course Chris Hemsworth, doing his thing. Things I'm okay with in this movie: pretty much everything else. I happen to love Thor: Ragnarok, and thought it was a fanstastic take on the character after Thor: The Dark World, which fell a bit flat for me. That, and Chris Hemsworth is a natural at comedy. But here, it felt a bit...empty, for some reason. Personally, I would have liked to have seen more Gorr do some more goddamn god butchering, and actually raised the stakes a bit (sorry, Lady Sif, I love ya', but...). Still think I like this one more than The Dark World, but that's pretty near the bottom of the barrel for me. And now my rant is done...ShaZam!

Steve Mercier

FYI; the URL on your website to this Patreon post is broken (remove the "/kaiielle" part to fix it). I did not like this movie. All the comedy is an absolute swing-and-a-miss imho, which takes away from the great potential of the dramatic parts. But I haven't rewatched it since seeing it in theatres, so I'll rewatch it with you and maybe I'll like it a bit better. 🤞
