Added 2024-07-05 23:27:23 +0000 UTC
Hello there! This reaction is available as part of my "Try Before You Buy" reaction videos here on Patreon. For the TV series that I react to at the Insiders tiers, I give the first episode out for free so you can experience it with me and see if you're up for joining us to continue! You must have your own copy of the episodes to watchalong as I do blur the episodes and have the audio muted. I leave a few seconds of it up at the start of each episode for syncing purposes. I am not allowed to distribute the entire episodes in my videos as this is illegal. Thank you for watching along with me!

Uh, yea, what the fuck.
I'm writing this immediately after finishing the episode and your reaction to it, but before watching your thoughts on it, though those will definitely be interesting to watch.
I had expectations about this show. Never having seen any of these MCU shows that were formerly Netflix Originals, I kind of bunched them all together in my head. Obviously now knowing what Daredevil was about and knowing that all the shows were known for being somewhat more dark and "grounded" than many other Marvel shows, I *assumed* that all the shows would be somewhat like that. When I started this episode and saw that Jessica was a Private Investigator, I expected the "PI at day, Vigilante at night, how will she manage?" deal. Having all these previous thoughts about the show turned out to work in my favour because I am so much more impressed, shocked, intrigued and genuinely a little bit shaken up than I ever expected to be, or probably would've been, had I known more going in.
First of all, I didn't expect powered individuals to be at play here. I know there's different thoughts on if Daredevil has powers or not, but more or less his show is just about normal people that happen to be heroically inclined and existing in the Marvel Universe. Knowing this now, and considering where this is set in the timeline according to the list that you're following, I have to wonder if Jessica and/or Kilgrave happen to be Inhumans, impacted by the Terrigen Crystals released into the Fish Oil stuff. It's a long shot, given how Kilgrave seems to have been doing this for a while, but then again we (or at least I) don't know how long it's been since the end of AoS S2. It would however explain why Jessica was asked if she's one of "them". This would've been affecting a bunch of people, making her indeed one of "them".
Secondly, but more importantly in my opinion, I was so surprised by the portrayal of trauma and (presumably) assault and similar themes in just this first Episode. The scenes with Hope were genuinely disturbing, and I didn't expect that. I am very hooked now and genuinely wondering if I'll be able to wait until each of your reactions comes out to continue watching through this, though I will try. I am just very curious to see how those themes are further explored even deeper into the show.
I might write a little reply to this if I have more to say after watching your thoughts section, but if I don't, I also might not.

There are many types of comics, even amongst the superhero genre. I had never read Jessica Jones' comic, which was called "Alias," but my friend was raving about it at the time. All I remember of his description was that it wasn't a superhero comic. She's a P.I. and has some powers, but it's not about that. She's just a detective who HAPPENS to have powers. That's all he said to me about it. I think he expected me to buy it, but I never got around to it. It was when my comic book buying was waning and I wasn't buying many new ones, if any. Anyway, my point is that you were saying it doesn't seem like a comic show/Marvel show and I was just saying that there's all types and something for pretty much everyone. Comics are popular all over the world but superheroes are only one genre and even in that, there are sub-genres. I like the variety of stories available.

LOVE this show. Can't say more now. The only info I was gonna say was the whole Netflix/ABC/Marvel thing, but others already explained it. Anything else I'd say would probably be a spoiler of some sort.

Would like to add quickly that David Tennant is one of the nicest, warmest people on the planet and his turn as The Doctor is one of the best eras of Doctor Who. HOWEVER, when Tennant plays a villain, he has the ability to chill you to the bone, scare you, unnerve and unsettle you, and that's such a gift of talent. He's one of the rare actors where, whether he's playing a hero or a villain, you still have no idea what he's going to do next. Sometimes it's a ride, sometimes it's a descent into hell.

Glad you liked it. I have been patiently awaiting this series reaction since Daredevil season 1. Jessica Jones is a relatively new Marvel character, created in 2000 or 2001 and has quite the following. What I like about the Netflix Marvel shows is how they take comic book characters and storylines but really give them weight. Jessica is an interesting character and one I feel Krysten was born to play. I was surprised that you recognized David Tennent’s name in the credits. To me, he’s The Doctor. I’m curious, what do you know him from?

FUCK YES. Love me some Daredevil...but Jessica Jones is my personal favorite of the Netflix/Marvel series. Krysten Ritter is just flat-out amazing, and I...can't really say much else. But FUCK YES.

I love how you mention how Daredevil is visually dark compared. Jessica Jones is much more brightly lit, but in many ways is "darker" as this first episode shows.
One of the things I really loved about this is how they really captured the classic "Noir" feeling of the classic detective shows, with the narration driving the story.
As for mentioning Netflix, all of the old "Defenders" shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders) were made for Netflix by ABC and resided there originally. After they were cancelled, Netflix retained the rights for a couple of years before they eventually reverted to Marvel allowing them to go onto Disney+

Welcome to Jessica Jones. While Matt deals with constant physical trauma from his villains. Jessica is burdened with psychological trauma.
This villain likes to start things off with a bang.....

FWIW, it IS a Netflix show. Disney owns ABC and handled their TV format production. Daredevil was also produced by ABC studios, but meant for Netflix which is why it's a bit more 'adult' than you'd find on a typical network show. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher were all developed for Netflix with the idea being that it would be a scaled down, 'street level hero' version of the big screen MCU formula. It all got derailed when Disney launched Disney+ and wanted to bring the characters home.

That episode's ending is what made me realize I was going to absolutely love this show. She puts on the facade that she doesn't give a shit about anybody but you could tell... She does. Maybe even a little more than she'd like to.

Excellent, I know you'll love this series. One of the strongest seasons of Marvel tv there is, imo.
