Jessica Jones: A.K.A. 99 Friends [1x04] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

First, the woman playing Audrey Eastman is Jessica Hecht. Pretty sure you know her face from Friends. She’s Susan, the woman Ross’s ex Carol cheated on him with and ultimately married. What I really picked up on in this episode is that even though Kilgrave did not make an appearance his oppression was everywhere. You never when one of his “slaves” is going to show up, if he’s going to show up. And they built out his villainy so well by introducing the stories of these newly found victims. I felt tense along side Jessica every step of way. And it looked like you did too. And the idea of not having control over yourself but mentally believing you wanted to do whatever you did leaves me feeling very chilled. I haven’t watched this season in a few years now, and the pace of 2 episodes a week is really helping that tension linger.

I figured all the people in the "support group" in the diner were Kilgrave's victims. Those were the ones Jessica weeded down from the initial group. The driver was the first one that gave Jessica info she could use to get her closer to Kilgrave by giving her concrete info on Kilgrave's movements. Granted the rest of them thought that she was there to be part of the group, but she was just interested in the info to help her get Kilgrave. She's not interested in "feeling better" about what happened to her while he's still out there. I know I wouldn't feel safe until I knew he was gone.

It's always interesting to me to hear people think that having strong people around...especially a cop with a gun (and special forces training) would be helpful in this situation. If I knew there was someone around who could mind control people, I'd want to surround myself only with unarmed folk who I feel I could easily take in a fight, lol!

just wait til Hulk rampages in Africa. That'll really win their trust (sarcasm)

I lived in New York and London, England you would be amazed the difference between the subways back in the day. 😔

Haven't watched this reaction yet, but that thumbnail makes me chuckle.

We get a interesting connection with Trish and Simpson and a big reveal with Malcolm. Some bits on Jerry as well. We also learn a bit about Jessica's life. Her parents died in a car accident. We also see some of the effects of more powered people being recognized in the world. Not everyone sees them as heroes and Jess was unfairly judged just because she has powers.

I think what you were trying to say about Jessica Jones is that she’s a street level hero—along with Luke Cage and Daredevil. And that’s kinda how Marvel (in other media too) divides it up, Street level, Cosmic Heroes, Mystic etc. A lot of people like these heroes the most because their stories are usually pretty grounded. The most famous (typically) street level Marvel hero is Spiderman, even tho the MCU had him going outside of that for the most part. Lastly, the lady, Adrianne I think was her name, I’m pretty sure you know her from Breaking Bad—she played Gretchen—Walt’s Ex & co-owner of Grey Matter.

The "He's always here" line hits hard. I was in an abusive relationship once. I know what it feels like to be gaslighted and manipulated and to not know if my friends are MY friends or HER friends. I can't imagine what level of fear Jessica must be feeling. Kilgrave is the perfect representation of that ex that has that hold on you no matter what you do. He's scarier to me than any other villain we've seen in the MCU. At least most of them were acting out of revenge or thinking they were right. Kilgrave's just an obsessive maniac "high on his own supply" so to speak. People that enjoy hurting people for no real reason other than just because they have the power to are the real villains. I don't remember if the show won any kind of award but Krysten Ritter and David Tennant both deserve recognition for their performances.

I know this was on your schedule, but...seriously, I don't remember all that crap. So, this was a very nice surprise: two episodes in one day!
