X-Men: First Class (2011) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Great to rewatch this one with your video! Magneto always has a somewhat understandable viewpoint, if generally excessive. He's very defensible in this one though, while returning the missiles to their senders can't be considered "good" it wouldn't even be illegal - a clear act of warfare. Also the incredible Erik/Charles connection here. Charles goes along with him on the recruitment, and even continues to hold Shaw for Erik to execute him - to some degree he has to agree it is necessary.

Additional question: both of the next X-Men movies have notable alternate cuts. Might just be me personally who really cares about the director's cut of The Wolverine, but I think quite a few people are going to care about the "Rogue Cut" of Days of Future Past. Just wondering if you had any plans on what version of those movies you'll be tackling.

Tyler Foster

I don't feel that strongly about the X-Men movies but it was fun watching Split and figuring out that you had no idea McAvoy was going to be Xavier in these movies. You may have learned this by now, but per your LBX, you would've seen Michael Fassbender in Inglourious Basterds, as the English special agent whose cover is blown by doing the wrong "three" with his fingers when ordering drinks. Additionally, Hank McCoy is played by Nicholas Hoult, who was in Mad Max: Fury Road as war boy-turned-hero Nux (along with Zoe Kravitz).

Hiddleston has said in interviews that he has signed autographs on pictures of Fassbender, so you are not alone in seeing a resemblance in the two actors. They both do have an amazing wide mouth, all teeth bared, shark-like “Joker” smiles with strong, squared jaws. They also have similar builds with a long, lean muscular physique. As well as similar acting styles, lots of passion and strong theatrical Shakespearean drama vibes.

I love this movie. I 100% agree on McAvoy and Fassbender being an amazing casting for the two characters. Fassbender reminds me of Tom Hiddleston in many ways, not sure why, but that's 100% a good thing.

KL has now seen the “Beach Divorce”

Love the ship names 😍 😂 I do love how both sets of Charles and Eriks have their own bromance

I love Fassbender as Magneto so much. This movie really gave the character so much more depth (outside of comic lore) and it's hard to argue with the points he's making. It's a fun dynamic between Erik and Charles because the two want the same thing they just go about it in radically different ways.

”I’ve been at the mercy of men just following orders…Never again.” -Magneto in 1962 “Let them pass that law and they’ll have you in chains with a number burned into your forehead.”- Magneto in the not to distant future from the year 2000 Magneto is not right, but he also isn’t wrong. You certainly can’t help but love him as a character in this crazy cinematic multiverse. Personally it doesn’t hurt that I find both of his live action actors very attractive.

Charles: “Please Erik don’t do this” Erik: [Shaw's mind is frozen by Charles] “If you're in there, I'd like you to know that I agree with every word you said. We are the future. But, unfortunately, you killed my mother. Steve: (pleading for Bucky’s life in Civil War) “This isn't gonna change what happened.” Tony: “I don't care. He killed my mom.”

CheshireKat528

I agree about the music, the score was done by Henry Jackman, who also did the iconic music for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I can’t decide if I like the Winter Soldier’s theme or Magneto’s more. I love that Magneto’s theme is called “Frankenstein's Monster”

The OG trilogy gave the world McStewart or StewKellen if you prefer and this film gave the world McFassy…FassAvoy…perhaps McBender is the one? You can call this quartet of dynamic duos whatever you want, because when you put them together you get the ship of Cherik! Idk if anyone has mentioned that name in the comments anywhere, but I wanted to wait and see what your reaction was to this movie with little to no knowledge of the shipping side of the X-Men fandom and how the undeniable chemistry between James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender launched thousands of Charles and Erik ships that hadn’t been thought of before. Side note: both sets of actors have completely fed into the shipping of Charles & Erik as well as their own real life internet fueled bromances. I have mentioned how Ian & Patrick are very good friends in real life as a result of working together on these films, well McFassy is no different and James & Michael are adorable and hilarious in interviews together. I love the duo of Charles & Erik. I enjoy them as friends, enemies, brothers, co-parents, co-leaders, adversaries, lovers… on the page, animated, alive on the big screen, young, or old, I totally ship them in every way 😆 I love that you compared them to parents at one point, and you had a great heartwarming smile while watching their interactions throughout the film. I loved the way you loved them!!! The Sirs Squared of Ian & Patrick are legends and played the elder duo perfectly not just for the movies they were in, but also by capturing the essence of what I remembered the characters being like when I was a kid. The First Class generation had big shoes to fill, and when it comes to Charles & Erik, I think the casting was phenomenal, especially with Fassbender. Both actors were able to capture the spirit of Charles and Erik, both as individuals and as a duo. Marvel has a pretty strong track record with casting, RDJ, Hiddleston, Johansson, various Spider-People, etc…but it still amazes me that in the Fox X-Verse that they cast Professor X and Magneto so perfectly twice. I have actually never seen The Wolverine all the way thru as a whole movie, so it will be fun to see it from beginning to end all at the same time for the first time. Has anyone mentioned watching The Rouge Cut of Days of Future Past? I’m sure someone has, maybe even you 😆 I honestly can’t remember how you feel about watching extended cuts vs theatrical versions of films for the first time?

CheshireKat528

Great reaction 😃😃have disagree about music. I loved Magneto music! I wish Hank and Mystic would have hooked up, Hank heart was broken 😞 by Mystic. 🥲

Perry Campbell

Just finished, First, your TVA shirt is amazing. Second, the scene where Xavier saves Erik from drowning hit so much harder this rewatch. Lastly, I wonder why people fight so hard to not like Magneto? Lol He’s been my favorite X-men character since I was a kid 😌

Ray H

Ah yes, I'm reminded of why Magneto is awesome.

Yoshi1990

Your last sentence is the best description of how I felt about it, thank you!

kaiielle

Yep, this is a good one. It came out just at a time when I was getting super board of superhero movies all looking the same. This one just looked and felt different. It's a period superhero movie paying homage to 60s spy/Bond films (hence all the Dutch angles and groovy transitions). It doesn't go completely off road like Brightburn or Chronicles (which came out only a year later) but it has just enough of a different texture about it to make it stand out. Or at least it did at the time. I do, however, agree the music is all over the place. It's like they took the score from another film and just put it over this one and hoped it all synced up.

Sam

I have said that I will do X-Men '97 at some point, but it won't be anytime soon. Sometime in 2025 I'd be willing. The original animated series is a maybe. I might prefer to just blast through that in my own time prior to 97.

kaiielle

Who all thinks KL should react, when she has time of course, to X-Men the animated series and X-Men ‘97

Joshua Gideon

Yeah buddy! Time to grab a drink, grab a snack and watch the reaction. Unpopular opinion (is it though?): I prefer this Magneto and Professor X over the original ones.

HugoBoss435

I always loved the Magneto character and how complex he was (and first witnessing him being brought to life by the amazing Sir Ian McKellen to boot), but this is the movie that absolutely reinforced my awe of how the character was written. Getting to see his budding relationship with Charles and how much they truly cared for each other, but not ultimately letting themselves be stopped by the other... truly magnificent. And for us to be incredibly blessed for these two characters to be played by Ian and Michael, and Patrick and James... we are just too lucky. As you said, KL... every scene we got from James and Michael in this film were inspired. Thank you so much for sharing this reaction with us.

Dan Dedrick

Looooooooooooove this one. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender? Fuck yes! Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult? Fuck yes! The director who made 'Kick-Ass' (yep)? Fuck yes! This one has a certain level of cheese to it, but it embraces it, and makes it work. And the big showdown at the end? Hell yes. Very cool.

Steve Mercier

Will watch when I get home from work. This is my 3rd favorite of the X-Men films, #2 X2 and #1 Days of Future Past.

Ray H

Dude. Hella rad. Looking forward to these. 😉

William

So remember when I mentioned being familiar with James McAvoy as an actor prior to his mesmerizing performance in “Split”… 😁😁😁

CheshireKat528

I will be super happy to see your reaction to this. Loved this movie.
