Taste is subjective an' all that, so I will never say that people shouldn't like what they like in terms of movies. People are welcome to think that this movie is awful, and the DCEU version is fantastic, times and styles have changed and all that, but in terms of the character, this movie is objectively a much better, more authentic representation of who he's supposed to be. He's a big, blue boy scout who does the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing, and because he has the power to do so. There were other comic book movies before this, but most of them were serial shorts. So there were earlier depictions of Superman and Batman, among others. ...Batman (1966) is worth a watch for laughs alone. It'll help understand where the Joel Schumacher take on the character for his movies came from, at least. As for Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) looking like Kevin Spacey... Hang on to that thought if you continue with this series up through the last movie in the series (Superman Returns). Superman Returns was meant to be a modern continuation of the series, but it under-performed at the box office. But if you want to see something tonally similar with modern production values, it's worth checking out. Oh, and Superman II is absolutely worth a watch (there are two version, Theatrical and Donner Cut, the latter is closer to what the original director intended before he was replaced with the former being what most people are actually familiar with). After that, the movies are rapidly diminishing returns until Superman Returns.
