Jessica Jones: A.K.A. The Sandwich Saved Me [1x05] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Finally can say without spoiling anything, I actually have two Jessica Jones statuettes, one of her in the Jewel outfit and one of Krysten Ritter's version. There's a purple diamond on her hip and, since Kilgrave is Purple Man, I thought that was a nice reflection of Kilgrave "owning" a piece of Jessica in a way. Might not have even been the intent but that's just my interpretation. I can understand her reasoning of not being a superhero. Look at the damage Hawkeye caused while being mind controlled by Loki. Someone of Jessica's caliber would be horrific under Kilgrave's influence. Plus, she makes a good point. Make a mistake under public scrutiny and that mistake will follow you everywhere. News outlets, social media, anyone and everyone will always remember the one time you failed and that'll always be thrown in your face. She was always good at investigating as is seen when she confronts her boss, and it's a much better suit for her to have the life of a P.I. She can make change, just in a different way. The sad part of that is that she has to see the everyday scummery of the world. Seeing what people are like behind closed doors is often not pretty. I imagine that life takes its toll on one's soul.

This show is very good at making me despise Kilgrave, which I imagine is entirely intended. The casual cruelty of making that random guy throw hot coffee in his face, which could have genuinely terrible consequences, just because he was bothering him, and even had a somewhat legitimate reason for doing so. I hated that. I feel conflicted on Simpson because he's clearly knowledgeable and really does seem to want to help, and at times I even think Jess is a little bit too rude to him, especially considering he is like you said also a Kilgrave victim and so does have something of a personal stake in everything. At the same time, he does overstep boundaries quite a lot and has a lot of unfortunate assumptions about people. I also felt like he was a bit ... extreme during the interrogation with the guard. So idk, I guess there's potential there for him to undergo some character development. That is, if he's even a longer-term character in the show at all. But it feels like he will be. The fact that they almost got Kilgrave this episode was crazy. I figured it couldn't work out just yet, but I didn't know how. It turned out to remind me of Gus Fring, a bad guy so outrageously good at planning ahead that he seems untouchable, even though he is just a guy, physically speaking, at the end of the day. Then again, Jessica very much could've killed him. I imagine that wasn't part of his plan. I admire how this show portrays being under someone's mind control as the disturbing, often life-destroying, and in a way perverse thing that it is. Mind control isn't exactly an uncommon trope in fiction, but I've never seen it displayed like this, where there's serious repercussions for everyone who goes through it, even if just for a short time. Because it is a disturbing thing, having the privacy of your own mind violated. I'm glad nothing like that is possible in real life, and even though with stuff like NeuraLink on the way I can imagine it, I sincerely hope it never will be.

Kilgrave, in the comics, was called The Purple Man. Makes sense why things turn purple when she's remembering him and why he tends to wear purple suits. In the comic he had purple skin. I saw a couple of comic panels, so I'm not completely sure if it was all the time. I assumed so. It was cool here that it made it more subtle and gave it the extra story element of nobody believing he really exists nor in what he can do 'cause he just blends in here.

Great episode and reaction. Don't have much to say other then we learn that Trish's family adopted Jessica after the car accident and we see more kilgrave and Malcolm and their first meeting with Jess.

That was indeed her comic costume and Jewel was one of the names she used
