Jessica Jones: A.K.A. You're a Winner! [1x06] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hey everyone! PHEW, this episode was heavy. (I feel like I'll probably be saying that about a lot of episodes tho. 😅) Thanks for tuning in and I'm looking forward to your comments on this one! [Direct link here.]

Jessica Jones: A.K.A. You're a Winner! [1x06] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

"Same way I know elves don't exist"... Um, because you saw Thor beat them all? I'm glad the truth finally came out but the betrayal Luke must feel right now is unbearable. To fall for someone only to find out they're the reason your former love is dead... that's a lot to take and process. Buying Jessica's childhood home... add that to the list of things that makes your skin crawl! There's stalkers and then there's Kilgrave. I think even Patrick Bateman would be weirded out by Kilgrave.

It's interesting, knowing what we know now, thinking back on the interactions between Jess and Luke and the non-interactions also, where how she even looks at him and definitely what she said to him are all in a very different light. It's very easy to think that because of the way Jessica is and all the trauma she's been through, that she was keeping Luke at arms length because of that. All the stuff that looked like possible sexual tension, had a different reasoning behind it. Since we only know bits of the characters, we can only guess and assume the "why" of their reactions to things. Most of the assumptions are probably accurate, but it's really interesting when something is revealed that makes us go back and look more closely, now knowing that the characters knew about all this, so this is why they said...whatever.

I cracked up at your reaction, at the end, to the reveal of the house being Jessica's old one and you being like, "Oh, this guy is PSYCHOTIC!" I laughed and said, "Oh, THIS is what let you know that?" 🤣 I know, but it just seemed like it surprised you. "Oh my goodness! He's CRAZY!"

I really appreciate your comments on this show! As you're also watching it for the first time, it's like reading a little bonus-reaction after-dinner mint, after finishing watching KL's. 😅

Surprising that Kilgrave actually (from what we see) entirely legitimately and generously bought that house (where he got the money is a different matter). I feel like he wouldn't have needed to do that. That said I am beyond unsettled by what his reason for it was. That guy is very psychotic I think. That said I do wonder if it's just a satisfaction thing for him or if he's trying to take away the comfort Jessica seemingly finds in recalling her childhood home. That would be fucked up. (Not that what we've seen so far isn't, but you know.)

The bubbly fake voice is actually closer to the way Kristen actually talks then her Jess voice lol. I love how Malcolm is slowly getting better and even tries to protect Jess.

Your facial expression when Jessica starts talking on the phone in that bubbly girly voice saying "You're a winner!" was priceless. 😂 And the way you swoon whenever Luke Cage appears... 🤣 (Can't blame you for that, the man is a Rodin sculpture come to life.)

Kilgrave is by far the scariest and creepiest villain to me. I really felt for Luke this episode. Even though Jessica was controlled during the incident, it was still a betrayal of trust to withhold that info and still sleep with him. Random Trivia: The song Antoine was listening/rapping was Backseat Freestyle by Kendrick Lamar.

What I love about the interaction between Jess and Luke is that it explored the "Sexual Betrayal" Luke felt. The show is definitely showing all the ways women, who are sexually assaulted, abused and raped, deal with the aftermath. We see Jessica dealing with that and Hope too and wanting to be completely disconnected from the reminder of that pain even if it kills an innocent baby. But what's interesting is the show then shows how men too can be raped/abused/manipulated (not the best choices of words) even if Jessica didn't mean to do that. But Luke clearly expressing that betrayal of trust.l, albeit a betrayal by omission. It just shows how good this show is that it is able to show so many different ways people are abused. I mean even Malcom's journey of narcotics abuse blends these thematic elements. And we will see more of this with more characters as the season goes on. Like no one is left out. It's why for me this is the best show/season Marvel ever produced.

Ahhhh...have to go to bed. Go to work. Boo! Tomorrow. I'll be watching this tomorrow.

I think I said back on the first episode reaction that this is a far darker show than Daredevil, despite being more "brightly lit". This episode is a great example of that. The subjects and conversations are so much bleaker and deeper than so many shows are willing to go, especially for Marvel.

Awesome! Have a great night, K!
