Transformers One (2024) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Thanks so much to Brad for the Reactr request! I think this one has been suggested, but I honestly wasn't interested and wasn't going to make any of these movies a priority, but now I am SO HAPPY that I watched this! (Didn't expect to cry either LOL.) Definitely one of my favourite animated movies now.

Please enjoy! Looking forward to your comments. [Direct link here.]

Transformers One (2024) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

I've been meaning to get around to watching this. I liked the original cartoon as a kid. But hardly a harden lore fanatic. So I had plenty of fun with a number the modern film adaptations. Trying not to take their very apparent flaws too seriously. For thems a bunch of overly heavy CGI adverts for merchandise. But, as was then original intent in the 80s cartoon, to sell toys. So cinema goers let us not forget that when getting to precious over the levels of critique. (Lucus probably changed the degree of scale of that merchandings endeavour. When we think exclusively for the big screen. Which, imo, affected his ability to focus on all the right aspects of storytelling.) That preamble is as to say. It's funny what subliminal, and in your face messages can be brought to young minds. In the package of fun action hero toys. A lot of the 80s cartoons of this ilk had something particular to say to that generation. What I loved the most about this movie were the choices and ideas around leadership. The names of the established characters and groups are born out of these circumstances, and not those that were appointed titles at birth. The Autonomous bots born from freedom. By their primarily optimistic leader. Allied against his fallen friend. His group born from deception. This being the consequence of that con and betrayal. This was a well told origin story. And we know from previous comments how much I have despised the attempt at prequels. lol.

This was a good movie. I highly recommended you watching the Bumblebee movie. It’s also a prequel/origin movie so no need to watch the other Transformers movies. I personally think it’s the best of them all.

The Transformers toys hit in 1984 when I was 9. They were everything to me. I watched the cartoon and I Marvel had the license for the comics and I ended up having the first few. And Marvel always integrated their comics into 1 universe so Transformers #3 is where I first saw a black-suited Spider-Man. I was very hesitant to see this, but it got great reviews. I’m in the camp where I’m a little tired of high cost film actors getting voiceover work. There are voice actors out there who don’t take you out of the movie because you recognize their voice. Which happens here a bit. Either way, before I could decide to go see it, it disappeared from theaters with a poor box office. I kind of forgot about it until it popped up here. I loved this movie. They were drawing from classic Transformers in so many ways. The Quintessons were around in a different form in 1986. One thing that is consistent across all tellings of the story is the Transformers adapt their bodies to Earth’s technology to blend in. Seeing them in different form on Cybertron is standard and expected. Oh and Steven Spielberg has been producing the Transformers since 2007 along side Michael Bay. Don’t know why he’s stay attached for so long, but there you have it. Also, the live action movies aren’t terrible. I do like 1 & 3. But they do commit the cardinal sin of adapting cartoons into live action and insist on focusing far too much on the human characters. From Smurf’s to Garfield, to Sonic. Glad you enjoyed the movie too and really got to experience it with an open mind. I got to enjoy it as a lifelong fan of the franchise and it still hit me when Orion and D went their separate ways. And due to the poor box office they’ve already said they won’t be making a sequel. Maybe we’re better off with the 1 good stand alone story.

So happy that your reaction is on Patreon now! I already sent you my thoughts on your viewing by email, but here they are again in case any of your other Patreon-subscribers want to chime in 🙂 ---- Ok, I just got done watching your reaction to Transformers One, and I absolutely loved it!  I am sooooooo glad that you enjoyed it and had a lot of fun with it.  This movie certainly surprised me.  I saw a trailer for it at the movie theater, and pretty much brushed it off. It made me assume that it was like a kiddie-fied incarnation of the Transformers. But as you saw for yourself, it's anything but.  In fact there a few rather dark moments in it. It's pretty universally agreed that the marketing for this movie was really bad and did it a big disservice. Word of mouth from people who have seen it has probably been the best marketing for it. Ok, let's talk about the movie!  After seeing the early scenes with Orion Pax and D-16 you said, "I really love these two." Indeed, they were essentially brothers.  The "I got your back, no matter what" kind of friend that everybody should have in their life.  I am very glad that you didn't realize that the two of them would end up being Optimus Prime and Megatron. Most people who see the movie are familiar enough with Transformers-lore that they know from outset who those characters are, and they spend the movie anticipating the story of how the two will end up turning against each other. Which is fun, granted, but I think it's equally fun if viewers don't know the eventual outcome, and go on this journey with no idea what to expect.  Your initial suspicion about Sentinel was indeed correct. Something about that guy just telegraphs that he's not what he seems to be.  My first time watching the movie, I was thinking that maybe he was just a kind of clueless character.  More of a puppet than anything else.  But no- he was about as bad as they come.  Some other reactors who have seen this movie are totally ok with D-16 destroying him.   After Pax and the others learned the truth about Sentinel from Alpha Trion, you commented that "they're whole world view has been shattered". And as you saw, whereas Orion Pax was more of a mindset of "ok, we know the truth now. What do we do to fix this?", the revelation was apparently too much for D-16, and sent his mind and character in a direction that it couldn't come back from.  Some people watching the ending battles are confused, asking "Why is Orion Pax trying to save Sentinel?" but that's not what he was doing at all. He was actually trying to save D-16 and stop his friend from becoming an even bigger villain that Sentinel. About Airachnid - yes, she's a villain and basically just straight up evil, but almost everyone is agreed that she just looks so dang cool. Her transformation scenes really stand out. You asked, "so, is B-127 the same character as Bumblebee from the Michael Bay movies?"  Well, sort of.  In the sense that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man are the same character.... but different as well.  It's basically the same for the Transformers One characters and their Michael Bay counterparts.  Kind of the same, but their own thing.   Transformers One is in its own continuity, different from the Michael Bay movies and the cartoon.  Unfortunately, because the movie didn't do well at the box office, it looks like there won't be any more additions to this particular continuity. But I'm holding out hope that the positive reaction from all the fans will someday convince the studio to make another installment.  After that post-credit scene, we -need- to see how this storyline progresses! I didn't expect the movie to bring you to tears, but I have to admit that everyone involved with the making of this movie, from the writers, to the voice actors, to the animators, to the music, did such an amazing job really bringing out the emotion in people. In fact, I'd say that this movie really runs viewers through an emotional gauntlet! I'm realllllllly looking forward to when you eventually get an edited version of this reaction on YouTube. I predict that you will get a lot of immediate views and immediate likes as well! P.S.- I hope that you are having a fun and amazing time in Europe!
