He was born with that condition and was when he was a teenager when his first change happened. The change also includes a mental state where the lioness takes the control but still Jean is aware of everything in some way, he cannot fight the lioness, is just a silent witness there inside. The opposite, when human, the lioness is there always invading his thoughts.
