In real life, Dan was skinny, 5'9, and had a black hole for a stomach. The boy had (and as far as I know, STILL has) an absolutely insane metabolism and could regularly down enough food in a single sitting to feed an entire family. One of his crowning achievements he told us all about was when he downed an entire 5-pound can of Hormel chili in a single sitting. Hence his self-appointed ironic nickname, "The Fat Guy."

It only felt appropriate then to make his character a chipmunk in the comic, since I always wondered where he was pocketing all that food (this at least offers a feasible scientific/biological explanation for it).
