Nomifuki Shikishi Board (WIP/Process)

I recently drew a shikishi as a gift for fellow artist Nomifuki-san! I took a few photos at first for future recollection, but then I thought maybe you guys would be interested in seeing the process. 😋

1. Sketch

   Self-explanatory, I did a rough and very light sketch with a 2H pencil. Shikishis come in all kinds of paper for different uses. I believe this one was Torinoko. I did do a test doodle on scratch/printer paper of what I wanted to draw before sketching on the shikishi. Please scroll down to see it! 😊

1. Inking/Lining

   Next was the inking. I actually don't have that much fancy art supplies with me since my college days are over, so this was done with a normal ballpoint ink pen. 😂 Please judge me kindly...

   

2. Cleaning/Markers/Finalizing

Next I started erasing my pencil lines with an eraser. Note you want to be careful here and start gently erasing after you let some time pass for your lines to set.

DON'T be like me and be impatient, cause you can smear your ink (like I did) 😭 There are solutions and fixes you can do if it happens, but it can become a tricky situation. For me I accidentally smeared the line on Kuro's grin, and since I did not have white-out on hand, I ultimately revised it by creating his grin even bigger. You can observe both the smear and my sketched resolution above.

The BG was filled with a marker from Copic's sepia tone set.

Here is another final look at the finished shikishi. Honestly as far as things go it didn't turn out bad. I felt very nervous since it has been a while when I worked with traditional media last. Ironic because when I started out as an artist, all I did was pencils and had an adversion to digital media 😜 Now you'll have to pry me off my tablet! 💢

Bonus

aaaaand bonus scratch paper for the shikishi. Don't try to make sense of my madness 😅 The coloring was to test the sepia Copic marker set, but in the end I chose not to use it for the characters at all (too dark). Wish i had a much lighter grey one for Kuro!
