When you're moving you can uncover some interesting things stored away. I thought that all of my sketchbooks were in my desk and nightstand.....but it seems I was wrong, as I discovered a single sketchbook stored away in one of the bins underneath my bed.
And it was the very first one I worked in and drew on all the pages of! Seriously, there were so many old drawings to look at that made me laugh, smile, cringe, and facepalm all at the same time.
What I want to share, however, are some pretty interesting artworks from my days in early 2012, where I first began to explore art as a hobby. Mostly I worked on some fantasy pieces, particularly dragons.
But when I saw one of my classmates drawing wolves and dragons (pretty awesome drawings by the way) I felt compelled to do the same and started drawing wolves around January and February of 2012. About a year later, in April of 2013, the first page of my comic Hunters was completed and released. So I thought it would be neat to share with everybody some of the original concept work for these characters, before I even conceived of the comic idea to begin with. I even found some old and simple descriptions that I used for them!
For the 'bio' of these wolves, yes there is indication that I was already thinking of a story and personality for each character, but I am just a natural storyteller. The furthest I thought by this point in time was a possible book of some kind, but even that was an uncertainty. Anyways, time to share some more cool info about the original designs and artworks!
Blazing Comet
In a mighty and large wood, a powerful pack of wolves live. Each of these wolves have special abilities, personalities, and features that make them different from any ordinary wolves.
This wolf is Diala, the wolf of the fire. She is very fierce-tempered but honest, although she is incredibly solitary.
As you can see, Diala's character was actually the first wolf I ever designed for the comic and the world of Hunters. Her character clearly underwent quite some changes design-wise, but not so much personality-wise. She might look quite furry, but honestly that is just how I used to draw wolves way back when I first started, even a year later when I started drawing the comic prologue.
Soothing Stream
In a mighty and large wood, a powerful pack of wolves live. Each of these wolves have special abilities, personalities, and features that make them different from any ordinary wolves.
This wolf is Nylin, the wolf of the water and rivers. She is very calm and gentle to many, although when in battle she's very fierce. Nylin enjoys being friendly, and she's very trustworthy.
Nylin's character turned out to be the second one I ever designed for Hunters. Surprisingly, her overall design did not change much, though her personality did undergo a couple of changes. By this point in time I was fascinated by fantasy and elemental abilities/color schemes, so perhaps it's only natural I design a sort of fire wolf and water wolf first.
Of all my original concepts, I would probably have to say that Nylin's is my favorite. Even now I am still surprised I was able to draw a decent perspective of her character and perhaps some good proportions as well. Too bad the same couldn't really be said of the initial prologue pages!
