Light Phone, heavy price tag (ad-free, early upload)

So much got left on the cutting room floor with this one. For example, I had a whole section where I talked about how days would go by without getting a single call or text, and I would realize that maybe I don't need a cell phone at all. Or how much conversation the look of the Light Phone III would spark with tech and non-techy folks alike. It's simply one of those rare gadgets that is so damn different from everything else, that every interaction with it could make a ten minute long YouTube video on it's own.

Which is a very good sign that this device is still reserved for folks who like being early adopters. There are simply far too many bumps in the (mostly software) road for an average Joe to feel comfortable using this device as a daily driver.

That being said, if you're a member of this Patreon and a lover of gadgets like myself, then I cannot recommend it enough. Feeling something different when using a piece of tech, whether it's positive or negative, is rare these days, and this device provides loads of both.

So, how many of you pre-ordered this? And what questions can I answer for you?

Also, this is an early Patreon upload. The YouTube version will be going live in the morning :)

This video is SO helpful! I have been on the fence about pre-ordering the Light Phone (largely because I haven't seen an in depth dive into it and I also wanted to see the photo quality!) and am ordering it! Thank you!

Great vid! What stands out to me is that the way you had to operate with the Light phone is how my parents operate. They have smartphones but still rely on pre-smartphone tools like paper notes, a paper calendar, and their memory. They can pretty much go about their day without needing the smartphone. I bet removing social apps would largely have the same effect as the Light phone. For example I don’t have X or TikTok anymore. I thought it would be hard but I don’t miss it, and if a friend sends a link to them I can usually skip it without the feeling of missing out.

The phone is neat, but this video was spectacular!

There is no wireless charging :( And I only get a day of battery life with some pretty bad drainage at night if it's not plugged in. Overall, the battery life is pretty poor.

I just got the Minimal phone in and I am promised myself I would give it a go, but holy hell e-ink so damn slow. Simply setting up the phone was painful. But more on that soon!

Really enjoyed the video. I'm curious and I don't think you mentioned in the video but -- how's the battery life? Also, does it wirelessly charge or only via cable?

Thanks for preventing that I would buy this phone, whit out thinking it through. Your review was very helpful. I’ll probably will keep thinking about it, but now better informed with real world experience.

Great video Becca! Been waiting for this one. Man, I love the vibe of that camera. Do you think being able to sideload apks would help get the apps you NEED, or would it kill the purpose of a dumb phone? Would love to hear your thoughts comparing this to the Minimal phone if you do a vid. Is there a happy medium, or are dumb phones DOA?

I got the Minimal phone, with the e-ink display, in last week and I’m struggling! But maybe that’s the point. It’s just far too slow for me. But does it just take time to get used to?

Becca Farsace

I've kind of gone half way to the Minimal experience - for the last 6 weeks I've been using a black and white e-ink phone (Bigme Hibreak Pro). It runs Android and does everything I need a smartphone to do, but does it on an e-ink screen so it's much less enticing than a regular phone. I've found it's cut down my social media use and doom scrolling hugely and I'm really pleased by that.

Super hype for this video. Looking forward to my LP3.

It looks neat, but I know myself. I could never ;)
