Sailing into Rio De Janeiro! - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep.183
Added 2018-07-20 02:00:00 +0000 UTC
When I think of Brazil, the iconic image of Rio automatically pops into my mind. And I’m pretty sure it does for you too. There’s just a certain mystique about this picturesque, exotic city nestled among breathtaking beaches and mountains that surround Guanabara bay.
Anchoring Delos right in the middle of this 7-million-person city was a completely surreal experience. If you asked me 10 years ago the chances that I would find myself in Rio, let alone on a sailboat here, I probably would have said next to nothing.
We spent nearly three weeks in Rio di Janeiro, and as you might imagine went on quite a few filming adventures. We feel like we got a good taste of the city, and picked out our favorite bits to show you what our experience was like. Enjoy :D ~Brian, Karin, Lisa, Brady and Alex
Some sweet doco storytelling yet again!

love the Morristown fire shirt....is that New York? Long passages to me are the best after 5 days you get into the mix and it becomes routine. But I just found 3 thru hulls had breached due to galvanic degradation. almost sank us as we sailed from Astoria to Brookings this past week. but knowing your boat is the key. know the sounds... the motor, the dingy slapping or not! been there too. great video and I think I am back to making this happen. thanks mark

Hi Jack! Really loved reading your message! So true :) it is a special dynamic on a bot and you kind of have to work together as a crew and as a family trusting the people around you. It is also interesting to think about all the different ways other boats make it work. we have seen a lot of different "setups" regarding duties and responsibilities on a boat and I guess you just have to do what you think is right :) We have for sure learned a lot over the years and by having so many amazing popel joining us on this journey. a truly special thing and that is what i think makes this whole project so cool :D all the different characters everyone bringing in something unique. Much Love ~Kazza

Yeah from all the drones we've had I can definitely say that the DJI Mavic pro is the one we use and trust the most. it is small but can still fly in strong winds and it's quiet :D hope that answered your question ~Kazza

Thoughts to would-be offshore sailors,
In my discovery of “Sailing SV Delos” some things have occurred to me about sailing in general for those who wish to sail the world or perhaps only some of it. The skipper and crew of Delos appeared to have a well balanced temperament in getting along well with each other in most situations. I believe this ability it Is unique for most groups of people. All “A” types won’t work and perhaps most all “B” types may not work well either. Intuitiveness, someone who is good with their hands, in fixing things when they break, that is, a member(s) of the crew who has/have a creative mind for solutions and always a positive mindset for “what ever” happens is very important when going on long voyages. I could go on, but I hope those reading my comments will gather one simple fact and that is that one must fully think out and understand what is required in sailing long distances and not make that painful discovery after 5+ days and nights at Sea. I love sailing and especially night sailing on the SF Bay, alone or with that special someone.

Brazilians really have it figured out. once had the privilege of being in Rio on New Year which was a great massive party and we loved every minute of it. good to see you guys had such a great time. looking forward to the next video and stay safe in those cold waters up north.

Great action! Over the last several episodes, noticed Leesir getting down with her bad self. Either it has always been there and I haven't noticed, or Leesir is loosening up! All good. Look forward to next week's episode already...

I spent a substantial portion of the past weekend ODing on sailing vlogs. As a result, I am even more impressed with the videos produced by the SV Delos crew than I was before the weekend. It is easy to record all the sailing drama- either as it occurs or after the crisis is over. It almost documents itself. The problem is that so many vlogs seem to focus on all the drama and fail to cover the "down" time. It is not necessarily evident but the intenseness of feelings is the same in the moments of total introspection as they are during moments of crisis. It's just a different type of intenseness. For example, I give you Leezir's diary on the sail to Brazil. She was overcome with the sheer joy of the experience and words were not adequate to convey her feelings. SV Delos shows us a balance of drama and drama-free cruising. We get an opportunity to experience the feelings of crisis and introspection along with the crew. This is a gift, a talent, not shared with many vloggers and that is one reason why I am such an avid supporter of the SV Delos project. Now I'll jump off my soapbox and return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Fantastic episode yet again. Always leaving me wanting more. Can't wait to buy my boat!!
Rio has always been on my lists of places to go. One day it will happen, there are just so many other amazing places I still have left to see or even find out about. Cheers, Thanks for the good times.
PS: Brady, those were quite the muscular Man-Cankles you had as a young man!

Another great video guys !
I am surprised why you bought the Karma Drone from Go Pro. It has been discontinued and you guys have a Phantom right ? Just curious as I am between the karma (because you can detach the stabiliser grip) or the Mavic Air (no comments) and they are both the same price.

Excellent episode! The shows where you change it up a bit are good, and both the Rio and Sao Paulo episodes have been highlights of Brazil. (Rio was already on the bucket list, but you bumped it up a few notches). And speaking of changes of pace, I just took a peek at the Abrolhos islands on google earth and read up a little about the national park, and I'm already fascinated about learning more!

Nice Video !!! Karin: Don't be sorry for the favelas ! Look this way: they have running water, electricity, cable TV and internet. They are there by choice ! It is a prime real state location overseeing the ocean. The houses are kept ugly on the outside to elude people and the government.

Yeah, we walked through there. Super nice and new area but not much going on. Empty buildings mostly... Looked well taken care of on the street though. And there were lot's of street food vendors catering to the office worker lunch crowd from downtown Rio, so that was awesome. Got a really delicious Cuban sandwich there of all places :)
