Sailing Hardcore - Life in ROUGH SEAS! (Pacific Crossing Part 2 of 8) S.V. Delos Ep. 417

We’re back with part 2 of our 3,000 nautical mile trip across the Pacific Ocean. This one’s got a bit of everything. We bash our way through one of the roughest nights we’ve had in YEARS.  When we're going hard upwind the bow really smashes up and down. Sierra was copping the worst of it in her room up front, so for the first time in her nearly 4 years of living on Delos we had to take her into our room in the back to sleep.

But as we round Cabo San Lucas and make more miles out into the open ocean, things start to settle, and by day 4 the wind clocks all the way around and we're able to set up the poles and get ready for some glorious downwind bliss.

The worst of it was behind us (at least for now, our final stretch coming into Marquesas was pretty tough too) and now we could kick back and the let the breeze at our backs push us along for days and days and days.

We hope you enjoy this one.  I think it captures some of the realities of sailing...the ups and downs in moods and energies.  How every aspect of daily life on passage is so drastically affected by the weather and conditions.

Big hugs from our little family on this beautiful Friday 💕

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra

Hey Jerry- we have 1x19 stainless. We put it on in Thailand and it was the factory spec from Amel so we've always stuck with it. We have some friends with rod rigging and from what I understand it is generally used on performance boats. I believe it uses a different type of swaging technique, as far as the performance over time and strength I really don't have any direct knowledge. I do believe it is more expensive, and for a general cruising boat I'd say that 1x19 strand is certainly the normal choice.

Sailing SV Delos

Sweet start to the Pac crossing! Thanks for the fun vids crew

Nico - The Toad Tribe

What standing rigging do you have? 1 by 19 stainless what do you feel about rod rigging?

JerryUlmer

With Brian as catcher!

Colleen Balch

That must be great to know that the long passages as challenging as they are won't be impossible with a toddler

Alan Gore

Thanks for the reply. Have a great day !

Mickey Finn

So true Scott, rough is definitely relative!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Mickey, we actually had something just like that- a handle with a little "harness" that went around the body of the drone. It broke and we never got around around to replacing it. Now that it's often just the three of us on board we rarely fly the drone while underway. So many variables trying to manage the boat, sierra, and the drone all at once. But it worked great with the little handle for sure!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Myra, yep Conor definitely helped us step up drone game while underway!

Sailing SV Delos

Sierra LOVED the crossing so much for this reason! Without our normal daily distractions of work, filming, taking care of the boat, etc. it was play time for her all day everyday :) She was in HEAVEN!

Sailing SV Delos

You are so welcome James, glad you're enjoying the videos and thank you SO MUCH for coming along on the journey with us!

Sailing SV Delos

Too precious! Maybe we have a future as a family band 😂

Sailing SV Delos

West coast babayyyy! Haha thanks so much Emily 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Most definitely! The dual headsails and some tasty tacos is hard to beat 😁

Sailing SV Delos

Aw thanks Wesley 🥰

A sailor can't appreciate smooth seas until they've sailed in rough seas! For me, in my 20 foot Paceship, 3 foot seas are "rough". One to two foot, . . . not so bad. : - ) And that wing on wing looked fabulous! I love doing that with my main and jib when possible.

Scott C. Wise

Such a great morning in Annapolis, sitting back with coffee and watching you guys. One of my most favorite times of the week. Got a drone question....With the tricky maneuver on this video of recovering the drone, any possibility of attaching a light dow or something to the underside of the drone that would be easier to grab, than the way you have to do it now ?. Anyway, thanks for another fantastic video. See you on the next tack !

Mickey Finn

What a fabulous episode. The drone coverage was AMAZING. You really captured the vibe an board. Loved the jam sesh with Sierra. Thank you!!

Myra Slepoy

Great episode, just love seeing Sierra having fun and playing with everyone. She is growing up in such an amazing environment 😊

Alan Gore

Thanks sooo much for all your efforts to put out such great content to us all, Delos is looking in great shape, the Pacific crossings are always my favourite.

James Outerbridge

That jam session was magic. <3

Sean Martin

The Pacific! My favorite, because the West coast is the best coast, mmmm little biased over here in Washington. Hope the stars below look like the stars above and all of Sierra's new adventures are like new one's for you!

Emily

The wing-in-wing, following gentle sea, running days sure are the payoff for bashing your way into it. Glad those days come. Thanks for another great adventure.

Colleen Balch

What a fantastic journey… a total inspiration 🥰
