A few pics, a hello, and lots of hugs from us!

Hey hey friends!  We wanted to show you a few snaps from our first stop in the stunning Tuamotu Islands 🥰. This little slice of paradise is Raroia, and for the first time since leaving the Sea of Cortez in April Delos is STILL!  After 19 days at sea and super rolly anchorages in the Marquesas, then our passage here, it feels like heaven to have found a flat anchorage.  There's a nice 15-20 knot breeze so it's been nice and fresh on board.  The water is super clear and we've been getting in some great scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming.  Sierra can't get enough of the being in the water here!  One other cool thing we did here was checking out the monument for Kon-Tiki.  Kon-Tiki was a rudimentary hand-made balsa wood raft that Thor Heyerdahl and a team of Norwegian Explorers sailed across the Pacific Ocean in 1947.  Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have reached Polynesia during pre-Columbian times. His goal in completing this voyage was to show that it would have been possible using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time.  After spending 101 days at sea, they made it to French Polynesia and ran aground right here on the reef in Raroia.  We've both read the book documenting their expedition called  "Kon-Tiki" which is amazing (and available in our amazon storefront at svdelos.com/amazon) but we also watched the movie after checking out the monument. We HIGHLY recommend both!

I (Brian) am in the process of getting my long stay visa which means we can stay for a year in French Polynesia (Kazza and Sierra both have Swedish passports so for them it's no problem) which means we can really take our time and move really slowly through this incredible part of the world.

Anywho, we hope you're having a fantastic weekend wherever you are!

💕 Brian, Kazza, & Sierra 💕

Hey Colleen, yes we saw that, can't imagine how scary that would be to be trapped underwater so deep below the surface. Hopefully they are able to find them soon while they still have enough air left 🤞

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Brian and Kazza. I dove into the Against the Odds series you recommended and also loved it. Based on that, I thought you’d want to hear about a situation that is happening right now, this is a link for the NYT online article, https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/06/19/us/titanic-missing-sub-tourist-tour?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20230619&instance_id=0&nl=breaking-news&ref=cta&regi_id=84642988&segment_id=136125&user_id=84f6620d263cefa46a8344cb1e7936b5

Thanks so much Alan, sending you our best!

Yes, it's very interesting to see after the high and much younger islands of the Marquesas. It's basically the shell of an island, with only the reef remaining.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Ray, sending you our best!

Sailing SV Delos

Same to you Larry, thanks so much! I often wonder if Sierra will be interested in sailing when she grows up, or run off for the mountains :)

Sailing SV Delos

We have some friends that have been around here for 5 years or so and gave us some great advice that we're looking into. Marquesas have never had a cyclone I believe, but most people tend to stay in the Tuamotos and Tahiti as there are some good options there as well. We'll see as we learn more about the different options.

Sailing SV Delos

ha ha I love it!

Sailing SV Delos

Will y’all be able to stay throughout Typhoon season in French Polynesia without concern?

Brian, My wife is mesmerized by the fact you can fix ANYTHING. So the other day she asked me to fix something and I told her I was going to “Brian Devos the shit outta this thing”. She was happy :) You’re setting the bar high for us lightweights!

Tim Johnides

C'mon admit it, you wanted a dad joke on Father's Day.

Steve Borst

Happy Fathers Day, Brian! What a treat to spend it at Raroia! I hope every future father's day for the little nugget is flooded with sweet memories of sailing with "DADA", beautiful anchorages and ocean adventures. Thanks for sharing! Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki is one of the greatest sailing books of all time, right up there with Moitessier's The Long Way! (also on your amazon page). IMHO Now for the bucket list item. I had to wait until you were on the other side of the world to share it. I Briefly appeared in and SV Delos Episode without you knowing it, Brian 😱 ! I was so honored and delighted...especially because Kazza had her hands on "my Package" 😱 😱. Its right there for the world to see at 22:05 EP. 408. Now looking forward to the mainsail project! Warmest best wishes to all of you. Cheers!

Happy Father's Day Brian and to all the Dads and Grandads in the Delos Tribe. Brian and Family....Appreciate the photos and your sharing of your great adventures and teaching about and showing us lands and horizons many of us will not have the opportunity to see firsthand. Stay well and safe....fair winds.

Ray Lehman

Stunning! Seems impossible that such low elevation sandbar type islands survive the ravages of south pacific storms. Thankfully they somehow do. And awesome to hear that this time through your going to spend a lot more time amongst those islands and their people!

Happy Dad's Day, Brian from a father and a grandfather with 4 amazing grandchildren, one who will follow in my footsteps as a sailor. I used to cruise with my kids at a very early age. later on, the grandkids started coming, but only one has a real interest. He is 9 and loves daysailing in Long Island Sound regularly. Hopefully, he will "graduate" to a bigger sailing vessel as he gets older. I sold my 4ft cruiser a few years ago when I turned 85. Now, I watch you jiggle my love of sailing.

larry kay

What an incredible paradise for you all to explore. You can’t imagine what an escape it is for all of us to watch and join the adventure. Thank you.

Spencer Norby

It's crazy that places like these are probably some of the very few in the world that look almost the same as they did in 83...probably more boats anchored here now than back then, but still untouched by civilization and "progress". What a trip that must have been for you!

Sailing SV Delos

Aw thanks guys, and a heart woo-hoo right back at ya 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Douglas!

Sailing SV Delos

Aw so sorry to hear you're dealing with back problems, that must have been so difficult to lose that part of your life over something you can't control. Well it's not the same as being out there on the water, but we are so happy that we're able to at least help you get your virtual sailing adventures in. Sending big hugs your way <3

First sailed through the pass into that paradise in 1983. It was LORAN C and SSB and the remoteness was staggering. Been back a few times but your first visit is always the sweetest. Enjoy the hell out of it guys!
