SLOW TV- 75 Minutes of Pure Sailing (Unedited) Sailing S.V. Delos

Greetings on this beautiful Friday morning!  This week we've got a little sumfin' sumfin' different for ya than our typical programming.  We're back with another SLOW TV video from our Pacific Crossing.  If you're newer around here and haven't seen one of these yet, it's exactly what it sounds like.  75 minutes of unedited, uninterrupted sights and sounds of sailing.  Put this bad boy on in the background while you're at work (cheeky), while sharing a glass of wine and having a super deep conversation with someone special (sexy), or while zoning out with your favorite herbal accoutrements (cozy).  Let us know your favorite Slow TV ritual in the comments!  If the Slow TV vids aren't really your thing, don't worry we will be back next week with another "normal" (well, maybe I wouldn't use the word normal to describe what we get up to in this one 😂 but you get the idea) episode!

Big Hugs from Paradise!

Love you guys, and love vicariously exploring the world with you. But sorry to say, this unedited approach leaves me cold. I know from experience that long passages can be tedious and boring, but is that really what you want to share with us?

Randy Balsmeyer

Hahaha breaking the first rule of being on watch 😂

Oh nice! Glad we can add a little vitamin Sea the work day for ya :)

Wowow you answered all my questions - thank you!!!! I'm saving these valuable tidbits for later! :)

Hey Skip! Well, it's changed over the years. When I first started out it was all about going as fast as possible, never mind if the boat had her rail in the water or the motion was crazy. Now years later sailing with a smaller crew (Sierra onboard) it's all about comfort. So we'll often adjust sails and reef to keep the speed under a certain point to avoid pounding waves when going upwind, or the boat feeling out of control when we were going downwind. So basically we'll just reef enough to make a decent speed without the boat heeling over to much. On Delos this generally means reefing the sails headsail when the apparent wind approaches 20 knots. So we'd take in a 1st reef (they are all marked) around 20 knots, a second reef around 25, and then if it is going higher we'll move to our 3rd reef or sometimes completely pull in the main sail and just use the reefed headsail and mizzen which works really well. We will take the spinnaker down when the apparent gets to mid-high teens (17-18 knots) is the most we feel comfortable with. All boats are different of course! But in general these days we tend to reef more and keep it comfortable, it's super easy to shake more sail out :). Hope that helps- Brian

Breathing with the sea. My breathing changed with the sound of the sea. Old memories returned. JerryU

This comment sums up why I quit my job and sold everything to get a sailboat instead 😂

Tricks of the trade over all the years 😂

We could run a go pro facing the instruments at the same time and cut it in the corner of the screen, that would actually be really cool!

Sailing SV Delos

so cool. did the sail with you all last night. evening coffee and a PR.

Scurvy Dan

After trying to setup a new computer, that was exactly what I needed.

Port tack, beam reach, all sails reefed in about 40%, 15-20+ knots and looks like a 4-maybe 5 ft sea. Perfect!! It's always interesting to weigh the right sail positions relative to wind and sea conditions. Do you have a general "rule of thumb" for that? Meanwhile, here in eastern NC, we have had a very cool and wet spring and only now, in late June, is it warming up to "normal" summer temps...and right on queue we have (2) named tropical storms inbound! Atlantic water temps are at record highs which is not good for Hurricane season. Looks almost perfect for y'all in the south Pacific! Cheers, Skip

Hey Victoria, great questions! I'll do my best to answer.... Well the sails flopping about do have some wear and tear, but it mainly comes from chafing on something like the standing rigging that holds up the mast. The genoa (big forward sail) has been on Delos since we were in Annapolis and that was well over 10,000 NM of sailing and 3 years ago which is a fair bit and it's still in really good condition. So they do last quite a while even if they flop around. You just gotta keep them from rubbing on stuff when they do. Also when we're running deep down wind I often don't let the main sail out all the way to prevent it from running on the mast, spreaders (white things sticking out from the mast) and the rigging. Typically our sails last 25K-30K nautical miles. A center cockpit does have some advantages in my opinion. The center of the boat is pretty comfortable and it creates a nice lounging space on the back deck that is very social joined to the cockpit. I do think that it works better on larger boats though. When we're sailing upwind we almost never have the hatches open because the chance of taking spray or a wave through is just too great. But when we're sailing downwind and it's not too much breeze (15-20 knots) we often will open the side portals and the top hatches to let in some fresh air. But even then the salt spray tends to settle on everything. Once things I've learned is that blue-water capable boats are meant to handle some pretty rough conditions and you'll usually give up long before the boat does.... Hope this helps to answer some of your questions, I could go on and on and on. ha ha! Fair winds- Brian

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I happened to catch the part where Karin makes a bed in Maggie. Must be tough to find personal space on a 53' boat.🤣

Jeff Fischer

Wow - talk about ASMR! This is actually great content for a wanna-be-sailor (like me), and I'm sure seasoned sailors as well. I love footage like this! When visualizing myself on the boat, different types of questions (and concerns!) come into my field, like: what kind of wear and tear does a trip like that have on the sails? and, does a center cockpit facilitate better conjoint solar and living spaces? and, some other reality-of-sailing based thoughts like, how often can you actually open the hatches for airflow when going at that speed and out on week-long journeys in general? How many knots was that anyway? and how resilient a boat must be to handle all that wave-cutting! Curious what books you read, too and what you all listened to - and why. <3

Love this!! You guys are always on so this is perfect!

To watch Delos sail, brings me peace.Thank You!

Enjoying this while I work! It would be fun to see how many knots you're going...can you just simply import that onto the video? 😆😉

Annelise Kromann

One more vote for that!

Livestream Slow TV would be great...some areas the star link works better than others, lets see if we can find a steady patch for it!

Sailing SV Delos

Ooooof we're here for you in this time of need! Haha you got this Sadie! Hope you had an awesome vacation :)

Best sound ever!

The Infrastructure might be hard but I would love a Livestream no cuts just birdseye view as you make way.

Rapto

This is EXACTLY what I needed on this Friday morning. After returning mid-week from a vacation in the Caribbean, catching up on the hundreds of emails is a little less tedious now.

Sadie Johnson

I love the sound of Delos moving thru the water. So many memories!
