Family Preps For Off Grid Adventure! S.V. Delos Ep. 439

Hey hey, happy Friday Delos Tribe!  We are stoked to share our latest episode with you which is all about how we prepare to spend a lot of time off grid.  "Off Grid" is kind of a relative term when it comes to sailing...but for us, the last few months in Mo'orea have felt pretty civilized.  Which is exactly what we loved about it! We were able to settle in to a bit of routine, have a very active social life, have access to tasty food and some other creature comforts...It was quite the treat after a very rewarding but very exhausting season we had this year of a major haulout and months on the hard, crossing the Pacific Ocean, constant island hopping without staying in one place for more than a few days or a week or so.  But after recharging our batteries, we were itching for a different kind of adventure again.  To be truly out in the wild, away from it all.  We were going to head back to the Tuamotus where we would have no access to shops, a hardware store, fuel dock, even a restaurant.  It's a very exciting feeling to head off to a destination like this, but if we want to be comfortable and safe, we need to make sure we are prepared!  So this episode is all about what it takes to do just that!  We hope you enjoy it, and make sure and leave us a comment if you have any questions about any of these topics we covered.

Sending lots of love, gratitude, and the biggest hugs ever to each and every one of you <3

Hey Shannon, right on! Fellow PNW people :). So we have a 1,000 liter tank. I usually try to never let it go under 500 liters so if the water maker breaks we still have quite a bit in the tank. The other thing we do is keep a few extra jugs (20-30 liters) of fresh water in the cockpit locker right next to the life raft. That way if we ever need to abandon ship we have some fresh water right there. Also the life raft has it's own drinking water and MRE's inside, I can't remember how much but it's rated for 6 people.... And if anything happens our our main tank in the boat liek it gets dirty or ruined with saltwater then we can use the spare jugs as drinking water and it gives me time to get the water maker fixed. Hope this makes sense and wishing you all the best! Brian

She is finally getting there πŸ˜‚ Up until recently the only place she would sleep besides her tent was in the hiking backpack, and now she is definitely starting to broaden her napping horizons!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes exactly, this feeling is like nothing else in the world 😁 9 years on the road, wow you must have seen more of the US than most people ever will. So incredible!

Sailing SV Delos

We are continually amazed at this too πŸ˜‚ Delos really is a bottomless pantry, no matter how much we buy it always fits somehow hahaha

Sailing SV Delos

I love how Sierra has developed the ability to sleep anywhere, in any position, in any circumstance. Now that is a skill that will reward you for a lifetime

I love that feeling of freedom and excitement as well when you are departing for a long time off grid. I have done the same but in a fifth wheel trailer towed by my pick-up truck. She was rigged with solar, batteries, inverter, generator and a motorcycle in the bed of the pick-up. I toured most of the major national parks plus many other out of the way places, this lasted nine years just me and my dog plus a few ladies I found along the way. To wake in the morning and look at a map and know I can go anywhere I want for a long long time is a wonderful feeling.

Hi, enjoying the video with my sailor Brian in Kenmore Wa- at the top of Lake Washington , he’s in a tech job, we dream about sailing away from Seattle someday , maybe when our daughter graduates from Highschool in two years??? Love seeing your little one growing up , hopefully not too fast πŸ’—! We were wondering how much emergency water you have in case desalinator breaks? Do you keep water other than what is in Delos water tanks? Thanks, Shannon and Brian

That was some crazy ride into the atoll! 4 knots against you! I always enjoy your prep videos and still am amazed at how much food Delos can hold.❀️⛡️

That's awesome you enjoy this style of videos. It's also one of our favorite times in the "cycle" of cruising life...it's a lot of work and can be stressful at times, but also such an incredible feeling to be right at the doorstep of another big adventure!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Jeff, glad you enjoyed it :) And yes the woohoo really is timeless πŸ˜‚

Hey Scott! So the current is caused by the tides. Imagine that an atoll is like a swimming pool that is basically enclosed by reef, and the pass is the only opening. When the tide is going up, water comes rushing in to fill up the "pool" and when the tide goes down it is rushing out all from that one point of entry (or sometimes there can be more than one pass, but still all the water movement is concentrated through one or two very narrow paths) Hope that makes sense! And three cheers for the second ball πŸ˜†

I have been following you since the second episode and I still love these prepping videos the most, the vicarious anticipation of departure and the excitement of adventure do it for me. I'm certain you will have a blast in such beautiful surroundings. Fair winds!

This is such a great episode-educational, funny, sweet, scary and so well edited. Thank you! Sierra's epic bike ride at the end always makes me smile.

This Should be interesting. Time to watch! Early in this episode I noticed you had to deal with some Prix, then not long after that, went a little nuts. And boy-o-boy that was a lot of money to spend on food/provisions! That probably would have cost you at least half that around here. But certain "exotic" fruits would have cost more here - if you could even get them. And those currents as you approached your destination! What causes them? Are they tide related? At the end, . . . Kazza and "the most random thing", . . . LOL Kazza, you are a brilliant, and subtle comedian! Then what was that word Brian said, then wanted Sierra to say? I had to put on closed captions to see "deploying second ball". While I heard "daloying bekinbal" which made no sense at all! Hahaha PS - But it's good you had both balls to "deploy". LOL
