Patron's Only Update (We Need Your Ideas!)

Ahoy Patrons!  So today there isn't going to be a normal episode so we just wanted to check in with you and show your latest backyard, say hi to Mormor, and let you know our plans for next week!   So I'm sure a lot of you have seen lots of "Year In Review" type stuff lately, and we thought it would be really fun to do a livestream and share how 2023 has been for us.  As you know, I'm a stats man, and so I want to gather some cool info to share and we thought we should ask you all for some cool ideas of stats/topics/questions.  It can be a straight numbers thing like how many miles, or it can be something more subjective like our favorite episode of the year, scariest moment, most beautiful anchorage, worst anchorage....You get the idea!  So just leave your ideas or any other questions you want us to answer in the livestream in the comments below!  The livestream will be Friday Dec. 22nd, we need to decide on the time still since the time change makes our normal video release time less than ideal.   Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and we will see you all next week!

Oh and one more thing, in case you missed the post about it the other day, there is a cool new group chat feature in the Patreon app that we've been chatting with many of you on.  So if you wanna check it out then just download the app and login on your phone and we'll see ya there :)

Happy Holidays and lots of love from our family to yours!

Brian, Kazza, Mormor, & Sierra 💕

What still do you use?

What are the top five islands you would like to return to for the beautiful water / anchorages and the top five islands you like to return to for the land its self. To explore more.

Troy Sublett

This may be too late, . . . How would you respond to people who think the Earth is FLAT? (besides just laughing)

Scott C. Wise

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years! You are living the dream, thanks for sharing.

Goofy Kat

Veterinarian here! Would love to know a count of the wildlife you have encountered in 2023. Or maybe top 5 favorite wildlife/animal encounters.

The Pattersons

Cheers! Merry Christmas

SV Trippin'

How Many Beers have been drunk? How many gallons of Hooch have been made? in the last Year. Top sustained speed, Top speed, highest velocity winds while sailing? deepest anchorage, most chain out? Funnest thing you've done?

SV Trippin'

Hey guys! Actually when MorMor arrived we took her out to an actual restaurant (our first in over a month) and they had a kids menu with chicken nuggets so yes, she actually did :). Hugs to you two and sending lot's of good vibes your way!

Sailing SV Delos

gottcha, good question. Just ran those numbers :)

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah Paul, sure thing can do!

Sailing SV Delos

Brian & Kazza, this last year has seen you in some expensive areas and some less so, lots of travelling about to be with family and the like... can you give us a breakdown on this year's expenses? Dockage, repair, maintenance, food, insurance, travel costs, medical, and the like? I think this may have been a fairly representative year for what people might expect when heading "out there". Or not, but it would be interesting to hear and get your guy's perspective!

Paul Carroll

Thanks! I dictated that question above and did not check it for (all) of those typos and gibberish, but you got the jist!

Jamie Hogan

Most expensive port for a grocery run, vs the cheapest port for a grocery run?

Brian Richardson

Awesome, love it! Thanks Shannon 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Cool we can definitely chat about that in the livestream! We also have a cool episode coming out in a few weeks all about our systems that allow us to stay off grid, a big focus is obviously power (including our wind generator) that you will hopefully find interesting :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey guys, great question and we will definitely talk about this in the livestream. In the meantime we also have this great video that we released for patrons that you will probably find very interesting, total breakdowns of costs and budgets, and lots of lessons learned! https://youtu.be/f07CCOwX1VU

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks guys, great question, added to the list!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for the question Jamie, definitely looking forward to chatting about this!

Sailing SV Delos

Haha thanks Sean! Haven't tracked these but lets see if we can get an estimate!

Sailing SV Delos

Happy holidays to you too Frank! Great question, we will chat about this in the livestream on Friday!

Sailing SV Delos

Haha well then I am an engineer to my core 😂 Well we cant add video into the livestream, but can definitely work out the comparison! Thanks Gerry!

Sailing SV Delos

Oooo this one we will be fun to calculate! Happy Holidays to you and your wife too!

Sailing SV Delos

Awww thanks guys, and we are so happy to have you ride along with us! That sounds like a great goal, thats a part of the world we would love to see by boat, although we have a longgg way to go to get back around now 😂 Merry Christmas to you too, and will pass along the greetings for ya to Sierra!

Sailing SV Delos

Great question Nate, thanks for sending it in :)

Thanks Dan we will add it to our list!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Colleen, I know she's just so dang cute lately 🥹 Well all the time really, but especially as her speech just continues to explode we are just constantly getting our hearts melted 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

How many things fell in the water accidentally this year? 😅 🛒🛍️

Shannon Stone

Many good questions out there already... Personally super curious to see your wind generator setup (MOunt outside) in detail as we are wrecking our brains on where/how to fix one on our boat right now :D ) And other than that: Enjoy the holidays with family! Good to get a break in!

Sailing Independence at Sea - Project Manaia

A breakdown on annual spend by system (standing, running rigging, sails, engine, heads, water maker, AC, etc), including maintenance, repair, replacement. Also, insurance, mooring and antifoul/haulouts. Possibly even travel expense to visit family? I’m building a budget and would love to find the hidden costs associated with live aboard that sail about and not sit at marinas for most of the year.

Shar & Robert Mecchi

We have often wondered about your Youtube subscribers vs your Patreons. Do you know what nationality your followers are from, which country has the most, how many countries etc. Would also be interesting to know how that corrolate to your Patreons

Ernie & Sindy

Your videos always so entertaining and or inspiring. So how has the starlink worked out for you in the Pacific? And has its coverage being comfortable, better or worse than your satellite internet coverage when you were in the Atlantic with a different system? Cheers!

Jamie Hogan

How many times you stub your toe on an object, or bang an elbow on something. How many flies on board have been unalived? Number of flying fish on deck during passage?

Sean Murray

Happy and safe Holiday! Do you guys have opportunities to meet with and socialize with local people in these beautiful locations?

Frank

Happy and safe Holiday! Do the small towns and villages you sail to have socializing and/or opportunities for you guys to meet with the local population?

Frank

Only an engineer thinks stats are fun. LOL. The rest of us deem them necessary. That said, how about comparing rough days to smoth days sailing and slip in some video of each. I haven't been seasick in a minute.

Gerry Lane

Happy holidays! We are enjoying one of the highlights of our week, watching Delos on Friday evening! My wife wants to know (not sure why) how many times someone has been sick on Delos this year. Something for Friday live stream???

Mark Desborough

No questions, just thank you for letting us ”ride along” for the adventure. We are hoping to spend a lot more time on our boat in the future. Wanting to circumnavigate Vancouver Island for our first big goal. Merry Christmas. Say hi to Sierra from beautiful Seattle!

Jay and Robin Orum

Might be interesting to see a breakdown of number of days spent in various activities, sailing, in marina, on anchor, hauled ou &etc. it’s hard sometimes to get a handle on context when you just say 7243 miles sailed this year, although certainly that’s interesting too.

Nate

repair / maintenance time vs sailing time ;)

Manuel Frenzel

Get into some ham radio stuff, there is a huge following for armature radio now, with a lot of younger people getting into it. I think you would do great. G-90 HF radio for $400 and you are all set!

Chris Marchi

I'd be curious how many times you had to fix stuff in the engine room and how many times in the living spaces and above decks... you know, the other side of cruising.

Spencer Norby

Merry Christmas to you guys hope to see you in NZ some time

Jeanette Dibble

Adding to Skip's ideas - how about stats like: miles per beer (or beers per mile), dinghy miles per anchorage, sail changes per week. Just silly stats that folks would normally never consider "measuring" could be fun! 😉

Bob Caverly

How about going thru your spread sheets and schedules for maintenance routines.

lowell mccormick

Love this little update Brian, Kazza, Mormor, & Sierra! Merry Christmas to you guys and to Brady, Blue, Papa Delos and the rest of the crew! We are actually headed to Sweden tomorrow to visit family in Mariefred, and Kalmar, and and our son just started university over in Växjö so I'm sure I'll be thinking about the lovely SV Delos family while there, too! I hope I'll be able to make it to live (but probably not) so if you all have the wherewithal to figure out the stats on how you all spend your time out there - that would be pretty special. For example - Out of 100% of your time, what percentage is spent on repairs, actually sailing, anchoring, land exploring and off-boat entirely for travels away from Delos. For greater fun one could calculate median or averages on a monthly time scale. You could even do pre and post Sierra configurations :). It would also be insightful to see how mama Kazza and papa Brian parse out their time, independently and maybe a third category for tasks and to-do's that are shared (perhaps route planning, cooking, shopping etc.) Maybe Sierra wants to try and describe 'a day in the life of Sierra'? :) This could give some insights on how you all tag-team on things like parenting and boat maintenance, food prep, entertaining parents (Sierra :) planning travel (by land and sea and whatever else is relevant to you guys). If Mormor was up for it - she could give a Mormor take on the to-do's and joys from her perspective! This is just a fun curiosity to entertain - no pressure to try and figure out that sort of thing that may be harder to calculate!

Victoria Makris

Building on what Will Paul said, how about comparing your CO2e consumption in a year with that of a similar-sized family that lives in an apartment in the mainland USA and drives a car etc.? This might get tricky if you include flights. It would be cool to see what percentage you are of typical US consumption. 25%? 10%?

David Seabrook

Building off Jim Lyon’s suggestion (which I love), what were your top new lessons learned, lessons re-learned, and good habits reinforced. Kind of a recap of wins & losses from the previous year.

Sadie Johnson

Since sailing is a lifelong learning experience how about the top things you’ve learned this year. (Like not anchoring in shallow water when it’s not low tide 🤔🤗😜😂)

Jim Lyon

Paul from NorCal here. What was the most and least watched episodes this year? How many gallons of diesel did you have to burn vs how many nm sailing? Divide that and add maggie fuel burned for avg CO2e per nm (betting its low!) CO2e per month/year? How much time did you spend on maintenance and repairs vs sailing? (For every hour underway you must spend X seconds on maintenance and repair). Ok ok thats enough from me :-)

Will Paul Grizard III

For the Solar. How many kwh generated with solar / wind / generator over the year? How much per month / day on average? What was best day for solar?

Are Årseth

Hmmm, maybe some stats over how much internet data you have used over the year. Witch month was in the top/bottom of your data usage. How did the usage change when changing from viasat to starlink.

Micael Lundgren

I would hope painkillers are being made with the fresh coconut water. If they are not I would like to request that Merry Christmas

Mac Costas

Skip here from North Carolina with some really important Stat questions: 1. How many Margarita party's in 2023?, 2. your favorite Tequila for Margaritas? 3. How many Beach Bonfires?, and lastly 4. How much Coconut water was collected and is there a special drink recipe using it? Merry Christmas !

Skip Vail

So nice! Merry Christmas!

Marisa Conner

Hi Mormor! (and Karin, Sierra, and Brian too!) Sierra, did you get your chicken McNuggets? We hope so! Make sure to watch for Santa and his reindolphins, I’m sure they’ll have a little something for you in the coming weeks. Hugs and our best to all. 🤗

Obie and Laurie Alvarez

Cool! How about worst weather day on the big passage. How many miles was your worst day? What’s kind of wind did you have that day?

Dan Meier

Yay! Enjoy family time in paradise! (And oh my goodness, Sierra's "Bye! I love you." at the end, beyond precious.)
