Mastering OFF-GRID Living: 4 Key Things Every Sailor Should Know ⛵️ Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 441

Hey hey friends! We're back with an episode that I think a lot of you will find super interesting and informative...These are topics that we get LOTS of questions about all the time, so we thought it would be cool to make a video covering the main aspects of our set up that really allow us to stay off the grid- electricity, food storage, fresh water, and connectivity. We would love to hear what you think about these style of videos- a little bit more topic focused and informative...do you like it? What other topics would you like to see covered? Also please let us know in the comments if you have any other questions about our set up and we will do our best to answer :) This will be our last post of 2023, so we just wanted to take this time to say thank you so so much for coming along on the journey with us this year. Your support and participation in this community really means so much to us. Every year we still can't believe what a strange and beautiful turn our lives took to lead us here...and each and every one of you are personally a part of this all. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and here's to another year of adventure, love, and family ahead. Sending you all so much sunshine and good vibes 🫶💕☀️

Brian you legend. Thank you for using the significantly better metric of KWh. Ah being used as extensively as it is as a measure of power is a massive bug bear of mine.
Didn’t learn anything new in this video and still loved it! THATS great content creation.

Hey Mark, We have left it on 24 hours a day for weeks at a time before when we need to upload a lot of footage. It consumes about 50 watts of power so that does add up over time, sort of like running another fridge/freezer. But lately we have been turning it off at night to save some power. We've noticed in the morning by the time I turn the inverter on to make my first cup of coffee it's already up and running so we're seeing connecting/boot up times of 3-4 minutes. Occasionally if there is a software update this can take 15-20 minutes but that is not very often. I wonder if it's a difference in the area or possible obstructions for those that are reporting longer times?

Do you leave Starlink powered up all the time? Some have reported it not reconnecting for hours or days after they power it down to save energy. Curious if you just accept the power usage 24/7.

Hi B, K, & S! I just retired and am hoping to sell my house, buy a boat, and sail around for 5-10 yrs. I am super impressed with your electrical diagnostic skills Bryan!! That is my biggest weakness. I obviously need to up my game before heading out. Are there any online courses that you might recommend? Or books? Or tutorials? I have the Sailboat Maintenance Manual, and Sailboat Electrics Simplified...but would like something more visual....Thanks!!! Paul from BC

Hey! The only reason we are on the Global Roam package is because we are not in a supported area, so in effect we are always roaming. It also allows us to pay for the data per GB when we're offshore. But if you are going to be in Europe I think you can get a way with one of the regional packages. But no, we don't have a special deal or anything. Hope this helps and sending our best! Brian

Hey Michael- Awesome so happy that you liked it! So there are a few things to consider for that. I guess the first is do you have enough solar to run it off batteries and still recharge? We have 2KW of solar so we're usually topped up by 11 or 12. So instead of wasting the energy I turn on the water maker. It uses about 1.4KW and makes 160 liters per hour. So you are using about 1.4KWH to make 160 liters of fresh water which is enough for 2-3 days for us assuming we're not conserving and doing laundry, etc. So if you think you have that excess energy available then it really doesn't matter if you go 24V or 220V. We have a 6KW inverter so our has no problem starting it up (high locked rotor current on these bigger AC motors). But if you have a smaller inverter then a DC one might be a good choice for you. I do believe that the higher capacity units are typically AC powered. Our water maker is from https://sunpurewatermakers.com/ , however we have had some issues with a a number of the components. The core unit has been good but we're had a failed high pressure hose, guage, and pressure regulator. They have been very good about replacing the parts but it's still kind of a bummer. so worth looking into them and seeing the configuration but be sure to shop around! Hope this answers your questions, if not lemme know by sending a direct message. Cheers! Brian

RVing and boating definitely prepares you well for homesteading I would say...makes any kind of physical home structure feel like such a luxury 😂 That's cool you've been through so many different chapters too! Will be wild to see what kind of cool technologies are available to help us be comfy off grid in the next years!

Oooh cool, good luck with the Starlink, it's pretty straight forward to set up for the most part. We're in a facebook group called Starlink on boats and if we ever do run into any questions we can usually find some good input there

Glad you enjoyed Rodney, so happy to share it with you...and YES it really is wild how much things have changed since when I left Seattle...I remember going "dark" sometimes for months like in the Solomon Islands not even checking or sending an email...now we were able to upload hundreds of GBs of footage in real time to our editors during our Pacific Crossing. Wonder what boats will be like in 14 more years

Brings back memories as I "full timed" in a RV for about 9 years, a lot of that was "boondocking" in national forests or BLM land in the western USA or wherever it was free, no watermakers but everything else was the same, this was pre lithium so I had to run the generator more often, made you very water frugal so you dont have to leave and get more and it is so heavy to carry in a fifth wheel you must be careful you are not over weight. I used hughesnet satteline dish which was ridiculously time consuming to set up then switched to cell phones connected to laptops. Now after deciding against live aboard boating, I am back in my travel trailer with starlink on acreage I just bought and plan to build a house for homesteading, luckily here I have a well, electric service and a septic system. Anyway Happy New Year!

Great video as always! Very informative. A topic I would like to see a video about? About your video editing proces! I'm learning editing myself, and I wonder what your workflow looks like, especially since you also work with some editors all over the world like Lisa and Kiril. So what happens between shooting the shots and publishing a video? Probably a lot!

Great video guys. I always enjoy these informative films. I am actually thinking of installing a water maker. Would you go for a 24V or a 220V system? I have Solar, wind and generator and 440AH 24V LiFePo batteries. Any ideas? Which brand of water maker did you install?

Very good infographics on this video! Have you heard of Quooker? https://www.quooker.co.uk/ basically instant boiling water from the tap. It would allow you to toss out the kettle and it’s very nice for cooking. Not sure how well it works on a boat, but we love it for our house. Instant hot tea 😊

I like the video. What I would be interested in is a video about your way of approaching strangers/natives in Cities.
You are always nice and get into Conversations quickly. You respect others.
The topic "how to approach strangers and not be a tourist but a welcome guest" is also a kind of howto video that would be sharable with a broader audience (many people are tourists from time to time)

Nice wrapup, might just use parts of this for the welcome on board of joining crew :D
Curious to learn more about starlink as we are looking into it. The plan for "Raom" in EUrope runs at 100 EUros a month and seems to cover most places, obviously not offshore, but the priority is not a flatrate, or is there another special deal you guys are hooked up to? Thanks already and smooth sailing!

From the episode's title, I thought this would probably be boring, but nope. You guys could present the growing of dirt and make it entertaining. Brian, your explanation of how the solar setup and water maker work was wonderfully concise and understandable for us non-engineer types. Great work!
