Will This JUNGLE SHIP Disrupt a BILLION DOLLAR Industry? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 379

We are BEYOND stoked to be writing you today from the Sea of Cortez!  We maaaaaade it and it feels amazing!  In the few short days that we've been here, it's already living up to all the hype.  We even busted out the scuba gear for the first time since Panama and dove on a shipwreck where we met one of the friendliest (dare I even say TOO friendly 😳) turtles we've ever seen.  The one downside however, and though it is no surprise at all and we've been building ourselves up for this....but it is HOT!  We've sweat more in the past 3 days than we did the last month and half in Puerto Vallarta combined πŸ˜‚

Anywho, grab yourself a frosty beverage of your choice and kick back & enjoy this weeks fresh episode.  It's a goodie, and I promise that you've never seen anything like this before (well unless you already know about this particular boat πŸ˜‚).  After sailing deep into the Bay of Nicoya in Costa Rica, we anchored right next to a rivermouth where we could take Maggie back into the mangroves.  And amongst the wild jungle that surrounded us in every direction was a very special shipyard.  Sail Cargo Inc. is a team of half Costa Rican and half international workers and dreamers who are living together in a community and building the first of what will become a fleet of wooden ships that will sail cargo on various routes around the world.  We are lucky enough to go on a little tour around the place and learn more about this incredibly and totally mind blowing project.

Here is the direct link to watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/CCub3kAiqfQ

We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!  And thank you for supporting our videos and allowing us to experience, capture, and share incredible moments like these πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’• Lots of love from the whole gang

Wow that sailing ship was awesome I went on Instagram put in sailing cargo.inc nothing came up? looks like your having fun excellent nothing going on in the tropics lots of sinking air and dust from Africa I'm in Hobe Sound Fla..hopefully you all will at some point will sail back this way ..Great Channel πŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

Gary Suffern

Yikes! That seems like a pretty important piece of the puzzle!

Colleen Balch

We asked the exact same thing! They have a few different ideas in the works (like floats for example), but we couldn't really get a definitive answer. We went at low tide and costa rica does have a very large tidal range...but it's still a big job ahead of them to figure that out!

Sailing SV Delos

It's such an ambitious project and from what we've seen they have the creativity and amazing team to make it happen! We are super excited to see how it all plays out for them!

Sailing SV Delos

I haven't seen any long term timelapses, but they have TONS of content documenting the process over the years on their YouTube channel, including some timelapses of specific parts of the build. You can definitely get lost down the rabbit hole on their channel, so much good stuff on there: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGuBI8GqmrsDNsx5KBUmXXg

I was just going through the comments to see if anyone else asked this question before I asked it lol!

Tracy Lynn

I've been wondering if you'll be there also. Maybe Blue and Brady will be there?

Scott C. Wise

I've been wondering the same thing, Mickey. I just had an idea. Maybe they'll lower the ship by removing soil from under it until it is low enough (to float) . . . then they open a channel out to the bay.

Scott C. Wise

Incredible boat project! Super psyched about it! How will they launch?

Colleen Balch

Ha ha yes you are absolutely correct!

Sailing SV Delos

Hola hola! Well it's HOT here but there is a fresh breeze in the afternoons. Pretty sure it's hot everywhere in the sea. Holding is amazing, water is warm and clear, lot's of fish and life. We are super stoked to be here! Actually going to post a Patrons only update soon so stay tuned for that. The only thing we feel like we should get a bit north for is the whale sharks..... You guys will love it here! Brian. PS-If you don't have it already get the Sea of Cortez guide from Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer. It's fantastic.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jim! We're just locking in our plans but about 98% sure we will be there :). Hoping to do our Patrons party on Sat the 15th this year. Hope to see you there. I really hope Jordan can come, it depends on where she is in the world but if she's close we'll for sure try to get here there :). Brian

What a gorgeous cargo ship! I'd love to be on her deck while she's under sail!! Her shipwrite is correct, there is more cargo than ships right now. They have a wonderful opportunity to establish shipping routes for themselves. I wish them the best! Hey guys the boat show is coming up, I'll be there for my second year Ya Baby!! Will Jordan be joining you? It would be great to meet her. Much love to the crew!! Extra hugs to the little nugget!!

Jim Krieger

Haha it felt like it was never going to end πŸ˜‚

Sailing SV Delos

Oh man, haven't had a fig newton in sooo long πŸ˜‚ But hey that sounds like a pretty great friday night! Our fridays are pretty tame these days too, except I go for my sundowner beer instead of the milk. Happy to be a part of your weekend ritual ☺️

Sailing SV Delos

Friggin awesome boat project.. love to see people doing things on this scale.

Scurvy Dan

Oh that's cool I didn't know they were doing that on the Hudson. We haven't made 100 percent solid plans yet, but we really want to make it to the boat show again this year. We will definitely keep everyone posted on here if we finalise some plans for it!

Sailing SV Delos

Exactly, it makes total sense that we could be incorporating much more sailing vessels into the global shipping landscape. Not every route will be possible or practical if the winds aren't right, but certain parts of the world it's such a good option. They also mentioned that in their future vessels they expect to use hydrogen engines which looks like an extremely interesting technology

Sailing SV Delos

So glad you enjoyed it Catherine, we really do have a long way to go and this is such a compelling and inspiring step in the right direction. That saw was so cool, just love seeing creative solutions like that!

Sailing SV Delos

The true OG sailing YouTubers! Looks super interesting, will have to give it a watch soon ☺️

Sailing SV Delos

YES! Congrats William that is amazing. And you definitely have the right attitude about it, going with the flow is probably the number 1 skill every sailor needs to have! Hope we bump in to you out on the water very soon!

Sailing SV Delos

We asked the exact same thing! They have a few different ideas in the works (like floats for example), but we couldn't really get a definitive answer. We went at low tide and costa rica does have a very large tidal range...but it's still a big job ahead of them to figure that out!

Sailing SV Delos

Hahaha so true, next time we will have to try a little HARDER πŸ˜‚

Sailing SV Delos

Mud was disgusting complete with sound effects. Glad we don't have feel-o-vision.

William Domb

The excitement of my friday nights at my 50+ age consist of a glass of milk, a half dozen fig newtons, and my S/V Delos video... Whoo Hoo!!!

Andrew Lee... lost, at sea!

The SailCargo project is impressive. It will be hard to beat a 14K TEU containership for efficiency, however, it will show what can be done and as a potent reminder of how we can live in a more sustainable way. Meanwhile and closer to home, the Schooner Apollonia is plying the Hudson River delivery goods along the way. http://www.schoonerapollonia.com Will you be in Annaopolis again this October? If so hope to meet up again.

About 40 years ago, in one of the sailing magazines I was reading at the time, there was a story of a wooden sailing cargo vessel that was sailing a regular route between Caribbean islands. It would drop goods off and pick goods up along the route. It wasn't as large as the one in the video but it had cargo holds with covers like those on the ship in your video. I think their regular route was a circle that followed the prevailing winds. It sounded like a good idea at the time. It still sounds like a good idea. I imagine that some of those that follow you guys also follow Leo Sampson rebuilding Tally Ho in Port Townsend and the couple in Brazil rebuilding Yaba. It's really cool to see the old shipbuilding methods that have been used for centuries still being used. Good design is timeless.

Lowell McCormick

Great video! I've been following Sampson Boat Co. for several years now as he restores the 120 year old sailing yacht, Tally Ho. I recognized the ship's saw straight away but his isn't powered by a motorcycle. πŸ˜‚ So wonderful to see these skills continuing and people returning to the use of smaller cargo ships for coastal shipping and realizing that Amazon 's amazing delivery times, though nice, aren't really worth the cost both in human or environmental terms. Thanks for sharing this!

CATHERINE HACKETT

This is a pretty amazing video of a 4-masted cargo ship going around the horn of So. America from 1928 filmed by one of the sailors aboard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLzBDhilDL0

Anne West

What a fascinating episode! I'd be great to see a time lapse video of the building of Ceiba. Maybe they already have one up to where they are. I wonder.

Scott C. Wise

Great video!! I love the concept of Sail Cargo!! I especially liked the answers from the Q&A "We're just gonna hang in Mexico".... Good answer!! We are changing our insurance this month which allows us to start our journey out of country. Plan is November, but in typical sailor life it may be March. I don't care, I just wanna go!!!!!

William Gross

Good Morning from Annapolis. Outstanding video and WOW what a boat building project.I do have one question .....How the Hell are they planning to launch the hull, considering her considerable draft? I just remember how far you guys came on Maggie in only 3 feet of water to get to their yard. Sending all of you love and safe passage . See you on the next tack !

Mickey Finn

A WOOD ship video, and not more "that's what she said". I feel like there was missed opportunities here guys. πŸ˜‚

Delos Fam, most of the cruisers are two-thirds of the way up the Sea of Cortez at this point. The season following them so-to-speak. Are you going to end up missing out on anything being further behind? Other than the heat how is the sailing? How is the water? How is the holding in the anchorages? We're two seasons behind you. Won't you be our personal guides to the Sea of Cortez :) Best from our crew to yours... - Sam
