Real Time Update Just For You!
Added 2022-08-21 14:01:04 +0000 UTC
Hej Hej guys and gals!
It's been too long since we had a proper catch up with you all, so we decided to sit down and give you the scoop on what we've been up to. So far the Sea of Cortez has been an absolute dream, and we are so excited to give you our first little glimpse of this new cruising ground for us. The video pretty much speaks for itself, but there is one point that I wanted to elaborate on a little bit more here...
Since completing my circumnavigation I've been reflecting a lot on the trip so far, and I just wanted to make sure that you all know that this trip literally COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT YOU. We get lots of amazing messages from the Delos Tribe about how we've inspired or changed their lives in some meaningful way...but actually it's all of you that have changed OUR lives by making this whole journey possible. I've spent almost a third of my life on Delos, and I can't imagine my life thus far any other way, I would be a totally different person with a totally different life without the support you all have provided over all these years. And what's even cooler is that you've allowed us to share this journey with so many people and inspire them to chase their dreams too...so you are every bit as responsible for this as we are. But I digress...long story short, you all are AMAZING HUMANS, and I am so proud and so in love with this awesome community we have together.
And that being said, lately we've been thinking about what this Patreon community means to us and to you. So our question to you is this:
What would you love to see on here? More of something we already do? Something we haven't done before? We want to make sure that this special space we have here is exactly what you want it to be! So we would love to hear your ideas on ways of doing that! Leave us a comment below or send us a personal message if you prefer :)
Here is the direct link to watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/NXTdcjKYiF8
Love all of your videos. Trying to decide whether to jump on a plane from Seattle to the boat show again. We were there last year and got to chat with Bill and Grace and Taylor. Sad to miss you! If we don’t make it (husband may have to travel to Japan), we will see you another time. Of course, would love to see Delos in Puget Sound someday! 💚💙💚💙💚💙

Hey Mark, thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback. You're definitely not the only one interested in more in depth content related to cruising, so we're going to start putting out some extra videos on here related to that :)

Hi Delos, still loving everything you put out; you're a regular inspiration to extend our sailing beyond our normal cruising grounds. I guess there's a range of audiences you cater for and I wonder if thinking about those segments might be useful. Without deep thought ( and no malice!) I guess there's Dreamers, adventurers, Boat techies, navigation techies, Getting into sailing folk, how do you manage a family on boat folk ( and likely more). There'll be videos that cross all interest areas, and some with more bent towards one stream or another, even subconsciously ( and I'm pretty sure there's not much you do which is subconscious - there always seems to be lots of thought going in). I guess I'm always interested to hear about destinations, how you plan, the challenges of provisioning ( some of the early provisioning videos are mind altering), how much Navigation prep you do, how to convert the boat from coastal anchoring to longer passage making, and the tech stream that you started but never quite finished ( follow up on the satellite system, tablet vs plotter, earphones, EPIRB use, making AIS work better, how did the new radar work out, your seemingly endless spares stores, medical provisioning) - I guess it's the 'Skip Novak' knowledge you have that is great to hear about. I'm guessing some of this is less compelling on pure YouTube viewing numbers). Also glad to see you've updated the 'channels' on youtube - helps find stuff! Or, ignore all that, keep doing what you're doing because it's all excellent!

Hi Skip! Yeah that was where Sierra was born. Love Gotland. Has a very special place in my heart and lots of great family memories. So happy you had a good time there 😊
Might actually go back and visit my family and Gotland in a few months.
Great idea about the videos! Will keep that in mind for sure 😌 many hugs! Kazza

Brian, Kazza, Baby Nuggs and rotating crew: I want this journey to be what speaks to you, fills you up, and brings you joy. That’s really what I tune in for …life under sail with a heavy helping of joy and of real and of humor (sometimes while under stress but even then, the humor pulls you through). If there’s a little more diving and maybe some Galapagos action to complement what the Sailing Academy is getting up to… cool …as the Nuggs needs a little less tending and that becomes more realistic, woot woot. But seriously, I’ll wait a decade before I mention it again. Feeling super happy to be a very small part of what you’ve accomplished and continue to do. xoxo

The thing that really gives Patreon value to me (honestly other than just being happy that I'm contributing in a very small way to you continuing to do your thing) is any video that you share here that is not on youtube. So stopping in more often, even briefly, with a little glimpse of where you are now, behind the scenes, extra content, a little nugget cam (I love ya'll but I'm here for the nugget LOL) is my favorite!

As I'm mechanically challenged, I love your boat work videos. They are so interesting for me and to see Brian "MacGiver" things is impressive. I do really enjoy these Patreon only notes. How about a monthly Patreon only video? Or something like that?

There is SO much GOLD for you all to go back and react to! Would be so fun to see you guys reflecting and re-living those memories! It's a good way to involve some of the previous crew too and see if they can join in on a virtual meet and you guys can react together and record yourselves! Love it!

Hi guys, we just returned from a cruise ship trip to the Baltic (two old farts on a big ship)! One stop was in Gotland! Toured the ruins of Visby, rode the restored Hesselby train in Roma, saw the very old Endre Kyrka church..........then it occured to me that Kazza's Mom lives there {somewhere?) and y'all stayed there for Sierra's birth. (I am not totally sure about that)? Anyway, what a very cool and beautiful island! The weather was perfect as the locals were freaking out with 75 degree temps! Meanwhile you are cooking in super hot Mexico! You asked about what else can you share on Patreon? Maybe a bit more about how you both grew up (Sweden vs. America) and how you will raise and educate Sierra as a comparison to your youth. Might be too personal to share and if so no problem, we understand. All the best, Skip and Julie.

Do you folks have a sun shade? I see you baking like lizards out there and think Delos canvas boujie-beach sunshade! Is it a different kind of heat than the Cost Rica or Panama? I always think of them as being hot and muggy also. Any-hoo, keep cool and hydrated. hope to see you in Bellingham!!

Greetings Brian and Family. Please allow me to add my congratulations on your circumnavigation. After 10+ years on the water it is quite an accomplishment that few can claim. Know that I have enjoyed the opportunity to follow your adventures and the various crew ( "characters") along the way. Wishing you and yours safe journeys/passages, fair winds and good health. Hi Delos,
Keep being nice people and show us the interactions with people and amazing places.
Me and my wife support you because
- you are very gentle and nice and friendly with other people and thus set an example of interacting with the world. The conversations/meetings/interactions you have in the world are a positive thing.
- you asked in the video to pay you a beer to keep doing this
- you see and show amazing places
Lovely realization - we pay you to be able to live your life. We influence you, you influence us.
So - keep going as you do.
The interactions with the commenters are a perfect twist, adding a new layer into the videos where you communicate with us/the internet.
best

These personal updates are nice. It's great getting occasional personal messages and making ads second are great.
A unique idea would be a series of brief how-to cruiser updates. Show people where you're headed (Delos Youtube time not real time) and how you picked an Anchorage from the chart perspective and laid in your course. Or how you picked your route and your expected comfort/points of sail. Basic steps of cruising that show up in forums a lot. Could even be used as teaser topics for a certain cruisers university. Basically a 3 min short blurb about you using cruiser university topics in real life. Cross pollinate PEOPLE (said as Australian as possible).

I love updates like this one. I love hearing how you are in real-ish time. I've heard a lot of creators worry that little updates like this aren't slick or fancy or interesting. I understand that concern because this is your business and making hot videos is such an overarching focus. I become a patron, though, when I start caring about the creators more than I care about their creations :) So, more little updates like this please! <3 xo

You're pretty good at including the "why" in your videos. Keep on doing that. 😀 No matter the topics in each video, knowing why you made your choices is helpful to everyone. Whether it's a choice of landing spot, trip planning, choosing when to do something, working on equipment, everything is presented best if you also include why.

Hey guys, just wanted to say hello, and I love what you guys have been doing so far. It's a nice escape to see how the three of you make your voyages happen. One suggestion that I saw in another comment, which I had the thought too: Alaska! Now that you've modified Delos to have heat and a bit of insulation it might be feasible?
I'll also echo that I love the watch updates and the night sky shots. Lastly, this may not be something you can do a lot of, but a deeper dive into navigation decisions, and how you actually sail the boat (rigging, sail trim, sail plan, etc.). I've been taking classes and expanding my knowledge, and I'd love to see the details on what makes Delos harness the wind. Hope to see you guys at the patron event! Thanks!

It might be fun to see updates from former crew members. A long time ago I searched for sailing in rough weather and started watching Emerald Steel and SV Honeymoon. A thumbnail of one of your videos with blurry boobs kept showing up. I didn't want to upset my wife by watching boobs on youtube so I didn't click on it. Then one time the thumbnail for "boatwork in exotic places" showed up, I clicked and was instantly hooked. You guys run a well managed boat & a well managed channel. Being a draftsman that has worked for project managers for a very long time, I can tell that Brian would be a great project manager to work for. Looking forward to Sierra 2.0 ;^)

One idea I have is for you to put together a package of the episodes from each "season". That way we wouldn't have to go to YouTube to re-watch an episode, or a whole season of episodes. Clearly you'd sell these compilations. Don't know if putting them on DVDs is still something that is done. But downloading them as a digital file (let's say a whole season) might take a long time. Personally I'd love to have copies of your "productions" from day one of SV Delos. Perhaps we could mail you large SD cards and have one or more season transferred on to it/them? This wouldn't be a "in your spare time" kind of thing, if there was a large demand. So you'd probably have to pay someone to do the transfers. That's why you'd have to charge for them, of course.

I would so much love more frequent updates! No editing required, no rules at all - doesn't have to be all 3 of you every time as that may become a chore or 'work', or cover any topic (but if you are looking for ideas, I'll include a list below :) A morning or evening 'snack', or mid-week SV Delos snack where you talk about what's on your minds & hearts and/or in your environment. Just some in-the-moment updates in whatever frequency you can muster would be amazing!!! Just want more of the Delos/Trautman energy :) Video Topic Ideas: Think-out-loud sessions as you plan your next journey or review places to explore later, unedited footage of you all just going about your day, even with no sound or just nature sounds, "SV Delos reacts to SV Delos" videos - go back and react to clips from the past, talk about boat maintenance and repairs - record your reflections on the details that pass through your minds, talk about all that video editing and the creative process! You could do a new thing like "Fika with Delos Fam" where you just casually have Fika with family and chat (with us - your virtual fam) - new merch opportunity on that too, a SV Delos Fika mug (or something). Or a "SV Delos Sailing Siesta" series. You can make these recordings available forever or just for a fleeting 48 hours (or something). Or "SV Delos Sweet & Salty" series - all just casual updates and thoughts :)

Hi Trautmans! We are such huge fans! We love your content; agree with comments above, about more live updates and bloopers are fun! With Kazza's comments about not being sure about crossing the Pacific at this time, we were thinking about how fun it would be to see you guys up in Glacier Bay next summer; exploring along the northern west coast of the US and Canada. Maybe after departing the Sea of Cortez, after hurricane season, it would be interesting to see you stopping along more of the west coast of Mexico, and down to the west coast of South America. I'm getting a bit carried away; this might be multiple seasons of sailing, but just some ideas we'd be interested in.😁Love you guys🥰

Your video production evolution over these past dozen years has been wonderful to watch. Some more ASMR vids (squalls at anchor for ex) would be nice as well, and I imagine the edit process is simpler. Carry on Delos, it's not always an easy journey but it is one of incredible value for yourselves and the many lives your videos touch.

Looking forward to any Patreon meetup you can arrange while you are in Annapolis. You guys are the creators and have been able to capture my attention for many years now. For things I would like to see more of: I do enjoy the periodic live updates. It would not have to be anything you would have to edit, also not looking for any 'spoilers' for the videos, but just updates. As an aside: It sounds from the outside like it is really getting difficult for creators. All I ask is that you are transparent if you get sponsored for something, that you just tell us and not just "product place" or mention something without disclosing that you are being sponsored. I agree with previous comments that I have been less interested in channels that become basically commercials for products. You have been handling things well so far, so hopefully you are able to find a balance between getting some benefit from having your audience without overdoing it. I have no doubt you will be able to make that balance happen and l look forward to seeing where the next stage takes the family. Cheers.

First and foremost I'm fine paying for great content and knowing 100% goes to the artists. To answer your question... Maybe more Patron-only opportunities to meet you. I.e. port-of-call meetups or cruise lotteries.

Real time updates, live updates / Q&A when possible. I’d also love to see in depth project / behind - the - scenes videos that might not be something you want put up in the main feed because of the editing overhead…?? Just keep being you! I don’t mind saying there other big channels I’ve stopped supporting because they basically sold out to promotions and barely actually cruise any longer.

Wait - I extra love when we get to hear the thoughts of people during their shift in the middle of the night or while the sun is rising. Seems like those moments make my soul extra happy for y’all and extra motivated to get the hell on a boat!

We've been to Loreto in late August. Hot doesn't describe it. Fortunately, the little hotel had great A/C. The diving and fishing was awesome.

I love the video Q&As. Don’t have to be live as those can get crazy, but it is fun and interesting. You may answer the same questions many times, but … we may not have heard it. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Lon
