Our SCARIEST Moment In 13 Years of Sailing around the world 😱 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 382

Have you ever wondered what our scariest moment at sea has been?  We recount some of our most harrowing tales at sea as we set sail on our 500 mile, 4 day passage to Mexico!  We wave goodbye to Costa Rica with a pretty average weather forecast, but after being greeted by some bioluminescent dolphin torpedos at night, Brian's first Yahtzee, and some truly stunning sunsets at sea, the passage turns out to be just peachy after all.  We hope you enjoy this episode which is part 1 out of 2.  We hadn't done a longer passage in so long so it felt great to be back out on the open ocean with our little family where we belong 🥰

We're coming at ya today with a happy and (mostly!) healthy and recovered Kazza who just celebrated her birthday yesterday!  One of the cool things about being on the move all the time is how different holidays, birthdays, and milestones can be from year to year...nearly every birthday spent in a different country than the year before with different friends and different vibes (think celebrating with a 3 year old in tow vs. celebrating on a private island with a bunch of rowdy intoxicated pirates 😂)

Also, as you will see we got REAL deep into the Yahtzee life on this passage...wondering what are your favorite sailing/road trip games to pass the time?

Anywhooo, wishing everyone a happy Friday, and thanks again for all the amazing messages and well wishes to Kazza while she was sick, sending healthy happy good vibes back out to all the Tribe all over the world 💕

I'm guessing you are talking about the photos on the wall during our little nauti nice segment at the end...those are Jordan's photos she hung up on the wall while she was onboard with us, she used to have a little piggie named Peanut she adopted when she was sailing through the South Pacific a few years earlier (also the inspiration for the tattoo she got in the previous episode). Jordan's a bit of crazy pig lady if you check out her insta (@jordan_copp) you can get a nice fix of piggie pics 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Never heard of that one, will have to take a little look and see what it's all about!

Sailing SV Delos

Oh yeah those were some wild times in the Indian Ocean! I'm so glad that we did it and to have had that experience, but man I won't be sad if I never have to sail in conditions like that again 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Oh yikes man that is a bad one.

Sailing SV Delos

Man, good question. I guess it depends on how late you stay. We had some great sails headed south but at times it seemed like we were always chased by squalls on the outside. Calico said it was very cool and interesting scenery in there, but you have to pay attention every minute with boats, shallow areas, etc while on the ocean I think is actually less stressful.

NordVPN.com/sailingsvdelos we use it all the time down here :)

TELL ME ABOUT THE PIG! I see a pig, a super cute pig!

Alternative scary moment - being hit by a squall mid-atlantic with a full size parasailor up, at night. Three of us on the foredeck, inadequate tethers, being pulled into the air off the foredeck by the kite, and the snuffer wouldn't pull down. Lost a sheet overboard which wrapped round the prop, and jammed the steering, pulled the kite blocks out of the rear deck, had to do a non snuffed drop with the subsequent tangle that caused. Took a day to sort out all the tangles, damage and mental stress.. Moral of the story - unity the snuffer lines from the mast before recovering the kite...

Best camping game seems like it might translate: Milles Bornes.

Hey Brian we are so happy that Karen is feeling better. I have a question for you or a video suggestion. Now is the time so many are traveling the US east coast heading south . If you had to do it again which would it be the ICW or the outside coastal. You guys went out , Calico skies went inside. We are in the Oswego/ Erie canals heading for NY. Sold everything and living on our 41 hunter. I’ve been a Patreon since the first day you offered it on YouTube. ( we met a few years ago at Annapolis) Any input would be appreciated Cheers Dave

That episode 93 in the Indian Ocean is my most re-watched Delos video. It blew me away and for the first time I realized the importance of a true bluewater sailboat. You had another scary voyage to La Reunion with Kiril on board, that system lasted for days. During that trip you put a small montage together of Delos slicing thru the waves, it came out killer sweet. Good job guys! Be well !!

Jim Krieger

C’mon man! Update the red dots! You’re in México already.

Hey Anne, here is the link: http://www.nordvpn.com/sailingsvdelos Enjoy Mexico!!!

Sailing SV Delos

So true saw she helped with this episode the girl crew was legendary xoxo to all hugs to Kazza and little nugget cheers Brian funny we have followed you guys for so many years trying to see if things Aline and we can do the next met up fair winds

Lisa & Claude

Thanks Brian, oh yeah I know all about those Seattle winters I feel ya brother. Happy to bring you some sunshine!

Sailing SV Delos

We want her back too, she's such a legend!

Sailing SV Delos

Yep that one is right up there...such an unnerving feeling to have a trespasser in your home.

Sailing SV Delos

We've been getting such a kick out of the nauti or nice, glad you're enjoying them as well 😂😂😂 We could publish a book of all the nauti comments we've gotten over the years. And yes the dolphins were SO amazing! Definitely one of the highlights of the passage for sure!

Sailing SV Delos

Hahaha thanks guys!

Sailing SV Delos

Yikes, yeah the spinnakers can get you into some trouble for sure. We had a sketchy moment fairly recently where the block at the top of the sock broke and the line jammed and we couldn't get it down....luckily we were able to smother it between the main and the boom before the wind picked up, but still never fun when you have issues with that 😬

Sailing SV Delos

Ooo yeah that could be the worst one of all!

Sailing SV Delos

Oh wow that definitely tops our scariest moments by far. But that's amazing you were able to recover the boat and keep on racing. Oooo yeah you definitely learn a lot over the years, so many mistakes we've made that we will definitely never make again!

Sailing SV Delos

Hahaha Jordan and I actually have a shared workspace on an app we use to manage the videos and our work board is called BJ 4 Life 😂

Sailing SV Delos

😱😱😱

Sailing SV Delos

Haha yeah that one doesn't translate as well to sailing as some of the others might 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Brian, remind me your VPN link please. Gonna go to mexico for a couple weeks.

Anne West

Love your videos and positive paradigm. Gets me through the dark Seattle winters, and smoky season late summers. Screw YouTube’s bots and nimby assholes for reporting the skinny dipping that was absolutely innocent. All the love. Another Brian

Brian Van Horne

That was an awesome video we need the ninja Liza back for a sail xoxo really hope Karin is feeling better

Lisa & Claude

If you decide to do a look back at scariest moments at port, my money is on Brian and Brady fending off the would be thief/pirate and trying to catch the slippery bugger. Happy birthday Kazaa, glad to hear you’ve gotten over the worst of salmonella. Sounds like it was rough.

Tom Caban

Nauti or Nice is hilarious! Keep 'em coming. Great video of the bioluminescence.

Bill Dapp

Delos rocks, You Tube sucks!

Linda and Alex

Even though the nighttime blue luminescence video was a little grainy, it looked artistic in a pointillist sort of way, and awesome to see the dolphins set it off. Scariest boat moment..getting dragged 75 deg over while trying to get the spinnaker down in a gust during a race. Glad Kazza is doing ok now!

Andrew Devaney

Scariest moment is stepping off a boat after a passage and not being sure when you can get back on…

Mark Hubbard

Teacher: Johnny, spell Urinate.... Johnny: I don't know how.... Teacher: Then use the word Urinate in a sentence. Johnny: Urinate, but if your tits were bigger you'd be a 10.

Ron Brock

Our scariest moment of sailing was sinking in microburst between Gulfport & Biloxi, Ms., with all sails down. The boat got blown over, filled up with water and sank. We should have closed the companionway. Live and learn. But we recovered the boat, put a new mast on it and came in second in the same race the following year. When you guys were approaching Madagascar in the episode you mentioned, one of my favorite Delos moments was when you said, "And then it got really bad". And then there was your description of Delos hitting the reef in a squall and Paul jumping over to direct you off with your bow thruster and engine. Scary times indeed. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and wiser.

Lowell McCormick

I like that when you shorten Brian and Jordan to just initials in the game it is BJ's. Fun times. O the insanity. Hope Kazza is feeling better and recovered. A super-pod of lit-up dolphins is pretty amazing!!

Emily

No Way! A scary SV Delos Friday?!?!

Scott C. Wise

Playing the ‘license plate game’ would probably get boring…
