What Can Go Wrong, WILL GO WRONG 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 385

Hey hey Delos Tribe!

We're writing this post carefully today so as not to cause any water damage on the laptop from the buckets of sweat that have been pouring out of us every day πŸ˜‚ We're getting closer and closer to the haul out, and of course to the boat show!  We're going to do a real time update once we're in Penasco and catch you up on what we've been up to the last weeks, and our rough (and ever changing!) plans, so stay tuned for that early next week :)

But for now, get ready for a doozie of an episode that pretty much sums up boat life...stuff breaking with moments of magic mixed in between!  We left Chiapas with a less than exciting forecast.  After weeks of nothing but headwinds on the tail of Hurricane Agatha, there was finally a light period that we would be able to motor into and make miles north towards the prime mexican cruising grounds on the other side of the Tehuantepecs.  And as the days unfolded, it was one thing after the next as we dealt with a surprise visit at sea, one stir crazy toddler, current, wind and waves on the nose, and a whole slew of system failures that left us with no gps, no autopilot, and no instruments.

I know all you sailors have had days/passages like this, let us know in the comments your best/worst stories of s#*t going wrong at sea!

Big sweaty hugs from all of us!

amazing how one little piece can shut down the whole boat always and again... but as long as you manage to find the cause the fixing is usually the easier part :D

Whoa sounds hectic! Can't imagine how it feels to be standing in waist deep water at sea, but glad you were able to pinpoint the issue and get it sorted. And second one....phew I hope I never have to experience that one for myself...9 knots getting towed into gnarly seas 😱😱😱

My worst story… One time (at band camp).. not really, anyway the forward head on my Boeing 737 was broken.. had to go to the one in the back of the plane… whew that was terrible. Yeah, I’m spoiled.

You asked " let us know in the comments your best/worst stories of s#*t going wrong at sea!" I've two stories. One, we do bilge checks every two hours and we found water increasingly in the bilge. We'd pump it down, but the next time there'd be twice as much as the last time. I looked at all the engine through hulls, all the normal through hulls. I couldn't find anything. Turned out two through hulls in the stern lazarette had blown out. I sat in waist deep water fixing that little gem with underwater epoxy. Two, on another trip we were sporting in the Gulf Stream, surfing a 50 foot sailboat like a boogie board. We were having a blast making 10-12 knots SOG and flying a lot os sail. As the evening wore on.. things calmed down. I went to take a nap and see started motor sailing when the wind went below 7 knots. A few hours later the engine stopped. Spoiler alert. It was diesel bug. We waited for the morning winds to fill in and headed towards land. When we got close enough I called SeaTow. The wind continued to freshen and we were on a lee shore. If that wasn't bad enough SeaTow grabbed us (remember 50 feet of Moody sailboat) and towed us at 9 knots into 7 footers. We slammed, stuff broke from just hitting waves, I taught one my sons how to hull slide down the waves to keep us going, the SeaTow guy every time I said slow down increased speed. At one point we were sliding down waves at 14 knots. Yeah. Stuff happens.

Nacho Libre is LIFE, we quote this movie pretty much every day πŸ˜‚

Oh wow, love it when things just "magically" sort themselves out πŸ˜‚ And yes you're right, the craziest moments are always seem to find a way to save themselves up for the night watch!

Sailing SV Delos

Oh no, we will have to buy her an apology beer in person, she's actually gone be at the boat show!! So stoked to catch up with her 😁

Sailing SV Delos

Well we have developed a bit of an obsession on board of listening to murder mystery podcasts while on passage πŸ˜‚

Sailing SV Delos

There are a few different factors that we take into consideration. One is how the strong the wind is and what the sea state is...anything above ten knots gets pretty tricky to try and motor straight into, and the stronger the wind and the bigger the swell, we sometimes need to turn down a little more to get any speed. Another factor is time. In this case we were pretty keen to make miles since hurricane season was upon us and we didn't want to get stuck in the middle of anything by spending extra days tacking. And honestly, now with Sierra we tend to lean a little more into motor sailing when we can because the passages can be pretty tough on everyone, and we'd rather get to where we're going sooner so Sierra can swim and play and everyone can get a good nights sleep :)

Sailing SV Delos

Dude, you have 2 hot chicks and a midget.. How much better could it be? UNLESS they start showing great interest in murder mysteries. Then, time to worry!

I definitely enjoy the new segment: wall of shame/fame/fortune.

For the Wall of Fame/Shame Lisa and Alex were mentioned but Elizabeth got missed. Oops.

Headwind: how do you decide when to motorsail rather than tacking?

William Domb

Ok worst sh$# going wrong at sea. 200 miles of the coast of Georgia heading to St Thomas the engine alarm went off (wind had died and we were motering. Damn thing was louder than a screaming baby and would not stop so had to make a trip to the engine room. Afraid that the engine might not start if I turned it off had to inspect it hot. NO FUN at first couldn't find anything wrong just kept getting burned. (by the way as you know most bad things happen at night) finally I found a large hose to the turbo disconnected, hoping that this might be the Issue I reconnected it but the alarm continued. by this time the wind had returned so with alot of hesitation we turned off the engine and started sailing again. The next day when the wind died thankfully the engine started and NO alarm. Sometimes it's better to be lucky!Cheers

Very good!
