Showing Our Toddler the World By Sail: WILD SEA LION ENCOUNTER! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 395

Ahoy friends!

Anyone out there need a little break from the cold dark winter days?  Well grab a hot chocolate or a nice hot mulled wine and tune in for some cruisey blissful magic from the Sea of Cortez!  We enjoy some of the best sailing conditions we've had in what feels like forever (seriously, foreverrrrrr) on our way to a super cool spot called Los Islotes which is the southernmost rookery for California Sea Lions in the world, and it did not disappoint!  You will learn lots about them in this episode, but I also had to share this crazy video with you that we stumbled across while doing some research on Sea Lions...it didn't really fit in the episode, but I found it so cool I thought you guys might appreciate it here, it's all about trained dolphins and sea lions in the US Navy.  I'm sure people might have mixed feelings on the ethics of using marine mammals in the military, but all that aside it's pretty fascinating stuff and a true testament to how incredibly intelligent these animals are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy_IwblcVOA

Watching and editing these episodes has us SO EXCITED to get back to Delos and the Sea of Cortez!  Many of you have reached out to us personally with direct messages of recommendations while we are down there, but if you have any must visit spots or tips for us on the trip back down to prepare to cross the pacific in March let us know in the comments!

Here is the direct link to watch the episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/hnPW0tpQi9M

Lots of love from Sweden,

Brian, Kazza, Mormor & Sierra <3

Another really good one! I've started to suspect those standard solar connectors aren't marine grade though. I've had quite a few of them get loose on the wires during the years, have replaced most with simpler ones.

Janne Peltonen

Well we watched Wind last night..I really ended up liking this movie more than I thought I would..really good. I'd watch over for sure.. hell, these will be added to the roster. Captain Ron has always been one of my top.

Scurvy Dan

Ok. So my brother, my pa and I sat down and watched dead calm. All of us for the first time. And we decided we did like it ok. And can see why Brian likes it as well. I personally loved the boats. Not a Nicole Kidman fan but seen her best performance about the time she was knocked out. Lol...so yes. It has been added to my sailboat movies.

Scurvy Dan

Merry Christmas, Happy Sailing New Year - from our crew to yours!

Ken Randall

Dead Calm is a classic film that illustrates how much caution and compassion need to be balanced in sea rescues and assistance. Billy Zane was about as creepy as any actor can portray. Should be categorized as blue sea horror film. Thanks, all films great. Robert Reford's "All is lost is Lost" is another film I'd put on a top five list.

Debbie Sheegog

Yep, that is my production. I appreciate the compliment, thank you. I always love the music choices you guys make with the videos. Do you have creators in house, stock tracks, or something you are finding in the primordial ooze?

Jim Bickerstaff

It's probably one of the most realistic movies about the days of wooden ships and iron men.

John Kimbler

So hard to choose between them, better to just watch both 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Oh wow it sounds awesome, we will have to check it out!

Sailing SV Delos

Ooooooh sounds interesting, sounds on par with Dead Calm for weird/creepy vibes, will have to check it out!

Sailing SV Delos

Totally weird is definitely a fair assessment of Dead Calm 😂

Sailing SV Delos

No haven't seen that one, just googled it and it looks awesome!

Sailing SV Delos

Oh man just wait for the bugs one, it's soooo freaking gnarly 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Hahaha the battle wages on 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for the tunes Jim, love it! Did you produce that yourself? Oooo submarine movies that sounds like a good watch for a rainy day (or in our case now snowy day!)

Sailing SV Delos

Glad you enjoyed! We haven't seen that video, what a nightmare 😳

Sailing SV Delos

Can't go wrong with a tom hanks 90s rom com 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Haven't seen that one will have to check it out!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes! A fellow Dead Calm-er out there!

Sailing SV Delos

Aw that's amazing! Glad we can spice up your fridays every week :)

Sailing SV Delos

Had to google that one, sounds really cool we will add it to our watch list!

Sailing SV Delos

Haha enjoy! You can't go wrong with either 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Glad we could you bring you a little sunshine and good vibes!

Sailing SV Delos

Dead Calm is great! But Captain Ron takes the cake for me.

Greg Zivic

Definitely a third vote for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”. There is so much you can relate to, even down to the absolutely calm waters of the Galapagos, and the journaling of your adventures! Has Sierra met any of the land-based four-legged versions of these sea lions? She has already spent better than 90% of her young life aboard Delos, and should have a very interesting perspective to relate to as she grows to teen and adult years.

William Flower

You guys kill me. It never gets old. As one of the resident old guys in The Tribe it’s always interesting to see where the intersection of points of view are. So how about this : on the movies. I was square with Karin on her call outs ( not just climbing on , those were my calls, although not in that order). But I have another movie, it’s called Kill Cruise. A pretty obscure Elizabeth Hurley sailing movie ( and yeah, it eventually gets kinda dark) but it was essential viewing for my “regular crew” years ago,.. we had fun with it. I trust that if you can find it, you will as well. Thanks again folks - you are the best.

Clark Robins

Great video, as always. Dead Calm is totally weird!!! When I think of sailing movies the first one that pops into my mind is “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” with Russel Crowe and Paul Bethany. It’s a fabulous movie; something new to watch!!

Myra Slepoy

Have you watched Master and Commander?

John Kimbler

Caddyshack. The classic “You scratched my anchor”!

Sean Murray

Fun episode. I think my favorite sailing movie is Captains Courageous , Joe Vs The Volcano and Captain Ron. I think the horror movie will be the next Delos episode with all the bugs!

Emily

How about a snow angel from Sweden !Merry Christmas from Southern California

Mike TopCat

The lady Claudia and I just watched Dead Calm and I'd like to say that it's never a good idea to take movie recommendations from a man who has been at see for thirteen years. :) Greetings from NYC!

Chris and Claudia Stothard

I have not seen Dead Calm, but I can understand your choice from looking at the trailer. The most popular submarine movie when I was boring holes in the ocean was "Das Boot", the hands-down crew favorite, followed closely by The Warriors. Seems like we watched those two once a week. Meanwhile, you all make us all feel like family, some of us living out dreams vicariously through your good work. Thank you! I want to share a little music. Peace ... https://youtu.be/cBRHBKDYd5Y

Jim Bickerstaff

Was I the only one nervous seeing lil nugget next to the edge of the dinghy after seeing that one video of the little girl getting snatched off the docks by a sea lion? Loved the video though!

Kim & Leo

Hi! It's SV Delos Fried-eye

Scott C. Wise

Maybe not a "sailing" movie, but good sailing in it.....Joe vs. the Volcano". If ever,,, you have ever.... wanted to cruise DO NOT watch "All is Lost"

William Gross

"All is Lost"? Can you watch a sailing movie that has but one word spoken, and seems to be a litany of what not to do when you crash at sea?

Mark Capalongan

As soon as the question was asked, I thought of Dead Calm-probably my all time favorite movie. It is soooo intense! Captain Ron is great, too, but I will have to go look for Wind. Thanks for another great video.

Jeff Mack

Look forward to Friday mornings. I can't wait to get the notification that your video has posted. I immediately grab a cup of coffee and watch every inspiring minute

Sam Gardner

Sea lion in French is phoque, pronounced just like the French word for jib, which is foc, which is pronounced just like the word, well you know. Favorite sailing movie is one of my all time favorite movies. That would be "Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracey. I'd like to find "I Sailed to Tahiti with an All Girl Crew". That one hasn't popped up on Turner Classic Movies yet.

Lowell McCormick

I guess I'm watching Captain Ron today... Based on Kazza's reaction, Ill wait to suffer through dead calm until im on Delos lol.

Kevin Fisher

That was lovely, thanks! Staring out into freezing conditions in the UK, a burst of summer sailing under spinnaker is perfect!
