WE NEED A HOSPITAL 🚨 NO HELP In Sight....Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 397

Ahoy Patrons, here's an episode that many of you have probably been expecting.  We got SO MUCH love and support from you all during this time, it was just unbelievable.  Thanks again to everyone for all your kind words and healing vibes.

This was a pretty scary time for us.  We've had a few other sketchy situations over the years, but this one really hit home and made us realize how vulnerable we really are when we're off the grid.  In this case we were about ten hours of travel away from medical care...but we've often been much further away from civilization like an ocean crossing for example.  So as stressful as it was, looking back on it we felt so lucky that we were able to get the help we needed.  And since many of you are current or future cruisers, we just wanted to also take this time to encourage you to make sure you have a thorough and well organized medical kit on board, and that you know what you have and how to use it.  This is our go to resource that we keep on board, we highly recommend you pick up a copy or something similar.  It's called Advanced First Aid Afloat and it focuses on how to handle almost any medical situation you might encounter at sea without access to help from a medical professional.

Here's a link to find it on Amazon:

We also made an episode all about our medical kit and what we keep on board:

And we have a post on our website with a rundown of the contents of our medical kit plus lots of other great info (just scroll down a little bit to "Offshore Medical Kit")

Anywho, in other news we made it back to Delos safe and sound!  We're digging right into boat projects, recovering from jet lag, and of course enjoying a few cold ones with all our friends here that we've been missing so much while we were away.  We will film a little video update for you all sometime soon and show you around all the boat yard activities :)

Lots of love and hugs from Mexico!

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra

WE NEED A HOSPITAL 🚨 NO HELP In Sight....Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 397

Comments

Food for thought: Vivotif is an oral vaccine that should help protect against Salmonella (a strain of typhoid). I use it traveling as I love street food and Ive yet to get sick, fingers crossed 🤞 Just an idea 💡 Glad Kazza got sorted out and is feeling better! Lots of love!

Jenessa Johns

Agree 100%… Sierras 6 inch bike ride and “whoo Hoo” is the best!

Andrew Lee... lost, at sea!

OMG, I was horrified to learn that Kaza was so ill, and I didn't even find out about it for many weeks. So glad she's recovered. As a crew you handled the situation so capably, the epitome of self-sufficiency, or at least the epitome of sea worthiness. Best wishes to Kaza, Brian, Sierra and crew in all your journey.

Steve Harvey

Glad Kazza is on the mend. Also, fyi< you can't ever get rid of the ending Nugget and the bike. WooHoo!

Andy Klevorn

As calm as Brian appeared throughout the video, I can't imagine the worry and stress he felt inside about Kazza's illness. As so many have pointed out, regardless of all the wonderful and exciting places that sailing affords us, its still the people you remember the most. Family and friends, and the kindness of strangers, .....thats what really counts in life. God Bless the three of you. Much love from Annapolis. See you on the next tack !

Mickey Finn

People are inherently good and most strangers are just friends you haven't met yet. I know you're being rewarded for your own past good deeds and would certainly pay that kindness forward. I also love that Grace considers you family. I have several 'family members' like that. Sometimes the family you choose is better than your actual relatives.🤣❤️⛵️

CATHERINE HACKETT

So sorry for the visit from your old pal Sal(manila). I was on the verge of tears for you all ........ the 5 skipjacks were some comedy relief (probably not to you Brian), but that final hug betwwen Grace and Kazza made the tears reach my shirt. Your Youtube channel makes friends for you all over the Mother Earth! Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

ER visit for that here in CT is minimum $5,000. Walk in clinic would be $300 or so. If you don’t have insurance.

Sean Murray

Thanks so much Heidi 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Lisa and Claude, and yes we are DEEP in the boat projects here! Luckily we are so excited about our big season ahead of us and our Pacific crossing that moral and motivation here in the boat yard are so high!

Sailing SV Delos

Kazza's one in a million for sure, thanks Hymer :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hugs right back at you guys 🥰 🥰 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Grace is definitely Sierra's best friend! Every time we see Calico in the distance Sierra spots them straight away and just starts yelling "Graaaaace" it's so adorable 😂

Sailing SV Delos

Yes she was our Saving Grace for sure on this one, we are so thankful for her and Bill!

Sailing SV Delos

We are so grateful too, thanks David 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Yes it was Calico to the rescue for sure! Would have been a nightmare to make it to Loretto without Grace, we are soooo thankful to her and to bill for letting us borrow her!

Sailing SV Delos

Wow that must have been wild in Ethiopia! She did manage to make a full recovery for her birthday though so that was great...but the next day was an absolute disaster 😂 stay tuned for that episode next week it's good for a giggle for sure

Sailing SV Delos

The video shows you put a lot of thought into how you presented Kaza’s illness and the complexities of being off the grid. And contrary to what many creators do on YouTube, you did not sensationalize what, for you, was a very serious and scary time. Thank you for taking us along your personal journey.

Myra Slepoy

Blessed be for returned health ❣️ Hate to see such a free bird down like that. The Swedish Princess prevails🙏🏼🧡

Hiedi Kuenzli

That must of been a truly scary time especially for not knowing the exact cause glad you were able to get the help and medication to get Kazza back to her amazing self . Stay healthy can’t wait for more adventures hope you enjoyed your time in Sweden over the holidays and are refreshed and I’m sure Brian is right back to boat projects cheers

Lisa & Claude

Karin you go from 103+ temp to Sweden cold. You are one special lady. Brian you definitely have a one of a kind lady. God bless the Delos crew and Bill an Gace.

Hymer

Sad to see Karin unwell, but a beautiful story of family love and friendships. Way to be, Grace! Hugs and love ,and thanks for the share. 🤗

Obie and Laurie Alvarez

Bill and Grace seem to be as close to you now as Brady and Alex. Aunty Grace to the rescue!

Bill Dapp

Yikes kids! Being horribly ill is bad enough on its own. Being isolated from help had to be terrifying. So glad everything turned out well, and no doubt Grace was a blessing.

Jim Bickerstaff

Thank you for sharing this story with us. It is so scary when you need medical assistance, and it's far away. As Kazza said, the worst part is the unknown. I'm so grateful everything turned out well.

David Besemer

Glad all is well & you are doing better! secretly I knew this already as I’ve been watching calico skies… Buddy boating save the day

Capt. Dustin LaBorde

Like night and day. A few bags of “juice” and antibiotics and Super Kazza is right as rain. If I remember correctly this was last Sept. Terrible way to spend her birthday. Cipro, Imodium, and motilium. NEVER leave home without them. Spent a very frantic week flying medical supplies and gallons of bleach along with rolling up my sleeves and treating many in a camp in Ethiopia where cholera broke out…. Never easy to be sick but a squillion miles from home….worse. Stay Salty!!!

Andrew Lee... lost, at sea!

Yeah we were so grateful for the amazing care that we got there, definitely exceeded our expectations!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Marcus, yes we felt so incredibly grateful to have their support and help through this whole ordeal

Sailing SV Delos

Exactly how we feel, we are so grateful to Grace (and to Bill for lending her to us) it would have been such a struggle without her. They're the best 💕

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much for the kind words <3

Sailing SV Delos

Have done a buncha medical work in Baja over the years. There ARE a few rudimentary hospitals, and most communities have at least young medico's at hand. But, you're right. For most heavy stuff, they take the bus up to Ensenada.

William Domb

Holly Molly!

Scott C. Wise

Scary to go through but glad Kazza is okay. Also nice to have Calico around to help each other out in times of need. Always enjoy watching and looking forward to the next one!

Marcus Murillo

So scary... and so relieved to see a great outcome. Friends are such a blessing!

Mark Hubbard

So glad you made, it was nothing to to serious or really life threatening. 😊 I hope you guys do not run into anymore issues while anchored god bless you 3 and I will keep you all in my prayers.
