Terrified and Heartbroken…WE COULDN’T HELP THEM 🥺 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 400
Added 2023-02-03 14:00:05 +0000 UTC
We proudly present to you our 400th episode! Episode 1 was published May 29, 2010. If you would have told me then that more than 12 years later we would be putting out our 400th episode and that millions of people would have shared in this adventure with us I would NEVER have believed it 😂 What a wild ride it's been, and we are so incredibly grateful to have each and every one of you here with us.
We hope you enjoy part 2 of our brush with Hurricane Kay. We prepared as best we could, and now there was nothing left to do but wait. It's a pretty vulnerable feeling to just be sitting and waiting, unsure of what's to come. Cruising life has presented us with all kinds of challenges over the years, but this has to be one of the most mentally tough ones we've faced, especially since having Sierra has really changed the way we see everything.
The hardest part of it all was definitely seeing some of the other boats struggle and feeling helpless to do anything about it. Knowing that it's someone's hopes, dreams, maybe they worked their whole life to make it a reality...and now that dream is on the beach getting pounded by swell. It was heartbreaking to see.
We are incredibly grateful to have come out from the whole experience unscathed, and we hope that those of you here that have your own boats or are working towards one in the future can learn valuable tips and lessons from this episode.
Meanwhile, the countdown is on over here for our Meet and Greet here in Rocky Point! Can't wait to see all of you that can make it tomorrow!!!
Big hugs from the whole gang :)

I get anxious as well just watching this episode. Having sat through some very rough spots that wind noise always gets my attention

Congrats on your longevity and ability to generate such inspirational content on a consistent basis.
About the hurricane… at some point is it ever safer to be at sea during 40-50 it winds? I vaguely remember your experience in the Indian Ocean which seemed less stressful.

Good Morning from Annapolis. WOW 400...What a true legacy ! You guys are a textbook on video of how to handle heavy weather. Ive had some scary times at anchor myself, especially at night. I remember on my first bareboat charter, anchored in Little Josh Van Dyke during a storm at night, spent the whole night on watch with the engine running in gear at slow RPMs to keep some of the strain off the rode. Charter boats don't have a lot of extra heavy weather gear. Plus it was my first year of sailing, so really lacking in real world experiences. But nothing like what you guys have handled. Thanks again for a truly outstanding video. Much love to the three of you. See you on the next tack !

A beautifully told story about a difficult experience. So glad you were okay and sad for the two boats who went ashore. Fortunately it doesn't look like it was a cruise ending experience for either. Mind-boggling that three anchors didn't hold. One can only assume that they hadn't set well, maybe because of the outboard or insufficient scope?
I still get such a kick at Sierra's woo hoo! at the end of each episode. Been with you for all 400! ❤️⛵️

What an episode ! You conveyed the experience so well, and it’s a credit to the storytelling skills you’ve developed over the years. Off to think about my anchor now…

Happy 400. This is the only one I haven't watched at least twice. Be cool to see some dives again soon. Bet you are looking forward to that as well. Greetings from Montana.

Thank you for sharing this with us. My home port in in Solomons, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. We occasionally get a brush with a hurricane. I have been on my boat in 30 knot gusts and seen waves and rain like those in your video. The power is awesome and frightening. I was able to get off the boat and safely stay in a house and check my boat after the storm. Being onboard the entire time like you, with no sleep, would be so exhausting physically and emotionally. Glad you prepared well and made it through as a team and family. Congratulations on your 400th video. I have been with you since New Zealand.

to say that I only needed to watch 3 episodes to catch up on your channel, way back when. It was the first appearance of the green man episode. Congratulations!

Hurricane Katrina destroyed the marina in New Orleans where I had previously kept my boat. Every boat that was in the marina was destroyed. It was the same at another marina just up the road. It was heartbreaking to walk thru the debris and see bits and pieces of sailboats that I'd raced on or against for many years strewn around the parking lot and roadway. of Congratulations on 400 episodes. Thanks to all involved in the Delos Project, now and in the past, for your efforts. It's a great show.

Great video as usual guys. I can't imagine how terrifying and nerve racking that was to experience. Congratulations on episode 400. I've seen them all and have never been disappointed. I wish we could attend the meet and greet in Rocky Point but it's just a bit too far from Albuquerque.

: - ( I'm happy that your anchor held but sad that other boats' anchors did not hold. I think that all boat owners (even power boats) should do what you did - go one bigger regarding suggested anchor size.
