Hey Sean- Here's a similar reply I just posted from above: well the latency is certainly less which makes web browsing nice. Overall the download speeds with SL are comparable, and upload too. The one problem with SL is the coverage is sort of spotty and we get service interruptions. Sometimes every 20 mins, sometimes every 5 mins. depends on where the satellites are I suppose. ViaSat was actually a much more reliable service in that regard. Never any outages once connected. I'm sure that SL will improve as more sats are launched however.

Yes, exactly. Hoping that some competition stirs the entire industry to improve. I know they just launched ViaSat 3 so that's a step in the right direction. F

Yeah, it's been a bit of a ride. We're currently paying for Mobile Priority data at $2.50 per GB, and using 20-25 GB per day. We're still on a Mexican plan so trying to figure out how to move to a US plan then we'll switch to one of the Maritime plans that support ocean use. At least we have some connectivity here :)

Now I know where the Via sat. It sat on the back of your sailboat. : - ) I know a lot more now too.

When you first took on the ViaSat project, you promised a thorough test and review, it is apparent that you have delivered on your word. Thank you ViaSat for taking this project on. Your in field test was more valuable to fans of the Delos family that you could have imagined.

That was interesting. Leaving the price to the end was smart. That’s basically my boat budget. But as another posted, how does it compare to star link.

Sean Murray

No Way! It's Wednesday not SV Delos Friday! But I'll still say hooray! : - )

Thanks for providing all of the deets on the ViaSat, Brian. Super helpful. Now hoping that ViaSat is able to commercialize a system that 1) is affordable for the average cruiser, and 2) eventually provides coverage beyond N.A. and Europe. Perhaps there will be a time in the next 10 years where coverage across the pacific might even be possible, tagging along on the satellites that serve commercial airlines. Thanks again!. SB PS. Seeing how much the little nugget has grown in AV time (after viasat) is also quite amazing!

Thanks for this in depth video about the Viasat system. Of couse now the question is how Starlink is working for you especially with the frequent changes to the plans.

Matthias Hager

This is really cool Brian! How does it compare with Starlink that you are using now in the South Pacific? As an IT Professional I love that you are a techie at heart. One question I have, does it have firewall capabilities? I know you use a VPN to encrypt but just curious about that.

Bill Dapp

After all these years, Brian hasn’t lost that corporate presentation cadence and presence! Great update on viasat..I can only imagine how pleased they are with your feedback.

Nate

This is a great study / information! Well done! Thanks Brain!
