Crossing the World’s LARGEST OCEAN…What It Takes To Be Ready: Part 1⛵️ Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 414

Hey Hey everyone! We are getting sooo excited to share the next episodes with you. Today’s video is part 1 of 2 as we document the process of preparing Delos and us for our Pacific Crossing. Stoke levels were ridiculous on board as the reality of the undertaking ahead of us began to sank in. We arrive to La Paz and immediately dive in to our never ending list of boat jobs like provisioning all the dry goods, trying to get to the bottom of our faulty transmission (this saga will continue into next week’s episode 😂), taking down our beloved dome, and going through and checking everything in our ditch kit to make sure we have everything we need in case of an emergency. And speaking of our ditch kit, we’ve always had a downloadable PDF on our website of everything we keep in our ditch kit, but we’ve gone one step further and we made an Amazon Storefront where you can see everything listed in one page and order straight from there. We’ve also got other categories of things like camera gear that we use, essential tools, our favorite cruising gear, galley gadgets, stuff for kiddos and more. You can check it out at amazon.com/shop/sailingsvdelos

It’s been so great to relive the excitement that we felt before the crossing. The only longer passage we’ve done since having Sierra was from Mexico to Panama, so we had so many emotions running through us as we prepared to spend 3 weeks at sea. We hope you enjoy sharing in the excitement with us as we get closer and closer to departure day!

Peace, Love, and Pineapples from French Polynesia <3

Oh man, both of these stories are crazy, and the second one is so incredibly sad. It's so true, anything can happen out there, you have to be prepared for anything

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Peter, first off love the word "borked" gonna add that to my repertoire 😂 and yes you're right it is borked, just edited it in the post but here it is as well: https://www.amazon.com/shop/sailingsvdelos

Sailing SV Delos

In the end we had to send it in (under warranty luckily) and got a "new" new transmission, and so far its been running like a champ! Because yes you're right that's the last place you want to get stuck without forward!

Sailing SV Delos

Oops typed it wrong in there 🙈 just edited it with the correct link!

Yewww!! Thanks Colleen!

Sailing SV Delos

And that is how fast it can happen!

No Sierra “Woo Hoo” on the mall dog ride? You will need to talk to her about maintaining that vital Delos persona… 😉

Pete and Nicole

That did the trick. Now I just need to buy a sailboat ;)

Speaking of sinking, we had a local 70' boat in our racing fleet leave Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans and head to Key West Race week about 25 years ago. A couple of days out, during a squall, the keel ripped off and took a chunk of the surrounding hull with it. It was at night and 4 of the 6 crew were sleeping below. All got out. The boat sunk below the waves in two minutes. One of the crew made a heroic effort to dive down and managed to release the life raft. The guys floated in the Gulf of Mexico for 2 days before a Greek freighter picked them up and dropped them off in Mobile, Alabama. The hull washed up on a beach near Tampa, Florida about 8 months later. Another local incident was a few years before. A cruising couple anchored outside the shipping channel near Gulfport, Mississippi. In the middle of the night, a barge tow (tugboat pushing 3 barges) ran them over unknowingly. They were pushed down into the soft bottom. Being world cruisers, no one missed them because they were often incommunicado for long periods of time. About a year later, a shrimp boat pulling shrimp nets snagged the rigging and pulled the sailboat up. The couple was found still on board. Be careful where you anchor.

Food for SIX MONTHS???? Would love to see the provisioning list and where the heck you stored it all.

FYI the amazon store link appears to be borked.

That was an excellent explanation of parallel and series for solar. That transmission is worrying me, WTF, isn't there a clutch to engage? could that be the problem? It's a 1 speed transmission, not complicated like a car, I am thinking about those atolls in the s. pacific with fast tidal currents, you want to have confidence in your power when close to coral reefs.

love watching and learning from the provisioning videos. We are about to take our 2nd 2 week trip. whoohoo! The amazon link goes to 'page not found'
