EARLY & AD FREE ACCESS: The Sail That BROKE Us 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 446

We hope you enjoyed all of our peaceful islands vibes videos as of late...now we're in for a bit of a rude awakening 😂 Our weather window to make our final shot towards the Marquesas Islands had finally arrived, and it was time to pull the hook and set off on our first multi day passage in a while.  We knew it would be a bit of an uncomfortable sail, but something about this one just hit differently.  Both of us were SO seasick (which for Kazza is fairly normal when it's rough out, but I very rarely get seasick) and just struggling super hard as we beat our way north.  It's hard to capture on camera what it's really like, but its a feeling of just being miserable and there is no where to escape except to keep moving toward your destination.  You are literally just trying to survive, the smallest tasks like going to the bathroom or making a cup of tea become a monumental effort...when you can barely take care of yourself, and you need to take care of another tiny human that is completely relying on you, it becomes even tougher.  But we survived!  And once we made it, as relieved as we were to drop the anchor and get some rest, things just felt off.  We realized our reality that laid ahead of us for the next few months.  The Marquesas Islands are an incredible place and a dream destination for anyone, but for us its also pretty tough cruising grounds.  The anchorages are SO ROLLY (like your cups are just flying off the table during breakfast). It's incredibly hot with little breeze (it can be 100 degrees inside the boat during the day) and full of bugs. The beach access can be very tricky with the breaking waves on shore. In the past this wouldn't be such a big deal, but with Sierra we really need to get to shore every day so she can have some room to run around, explore, and get some energy out.  After spending the last months in the Tuamotus and Society Islands which are some of the best times we've had in our entire trip around the world, realizing we left that all behind and knowing we had months of more difficult living ahead of us had us both feeling down a little bit.  Add in the exhaustion and challenge of the passage and it made for a pretty tough moment for all of us.  We will elaborate some more on these feelings in our next episode, but we did want to try and make a point to include the reality of the challenges, and not just the highlight reel.  We hope you enjoy this one, and hope the weekend treats ya well!

Sending lots of love and big hugs from Hiva Oa,

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra

Cutest, ever. :P

Colleen Balch

That's a really nice quite Joanne, and definitely one that applies to the life of a sailor (and any human really). Thanks for the kind words and sending hugs back to you too :)

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for sharing in it with us Catherine 🥰🥰🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Colleen 💕💕 And yes she really is just the cutest little pirate ever isnt she?!?!

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah that's true Sean, having some big changes and unknowns on the horizon can definitely add to the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much for the kind words Victoria. We've gotten used to it over the years so yeah its easy sometimes to forget that being a mom and working from and sailing a boat is A LOT. Then throw in some crippling seasickness on top. So yes I suppose we can definitely give ourselves some grace here and try and remember that the next time we're feeling this way too. And YES Sierra was such a little trooper!

Sailing SV Delos

Ohhh that's next level. We had one of those a while back and that's one we won't be forgetting any time soon 😵

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Francis 🫶🫶🫶

Sailing SV Delos

OMG 😆 😆 😆 Well I've been working on that foliage for a while now, glad to see all the years of cultivation is are paying off 😂

Sailing SV Delos

This is true!!! Hopefully it will be worth it when we get to spend another season in French Polynesia instead of continuing on west to New Zealand as most boats do...but for now, we were definitely questioning ourselves at that moment

Sailing SV Delos

Yes the tuna was such a disappointment 😂 definitely gotta work on our fishing skills if we couldn't catch one as we literally drove through an entire shoal of them jumping at the surface 🤦‍♂️

Sailing SV Delos

That pretty much sums it up, we had definitely had enough. Thanks for the kind words Kevin and we are stoked to have you in our little tribe :)

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much for the kind words Spencer. We are so stoked and honored to have you along on the journey with us too. Sending virtual hugs right back to you :)

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah it's definitely times like these that we miss having some extra hands on board, makes such a difference even one more person for the night watches

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Alex, that was our favorite part of the episode! She is just too dang cute sometimes 🥹

Sailing SV Delos

This sums it up pretty well Anne! Like you arrive to your destination and think it's over, that the misery has passed, and then nope it's not over yet!

Sailing SV Delos

That's definitely correct, gotta make it through the times to make the good ones feel good!

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah it totally caught us off guard, haven't felt so terrible out there in a loooong time 🤢

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah I think the lack of sleep/exhaustion/sea sickness definitely contributed to everything. And yes that was just one of the cutest moments ever with Sierra, she's becoming a proper pirate kiddo!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much for the kind words Sean 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Katie 🫶

I so much enjoy watching you and your family. Your honesty and raw emotions are a breath of fresh air. This episode made my heart reach out to you Kazza and a quote online came to mind. “There are things you learn best in Calm, and some in Storm” - Willa Cather (American writer). Hang in there and seek that internal truth as these feelings are your compass. Hugs to you! Joanne

Joanne Luger

I have always appreciated the honesty in your videos. Suffering shared is halved, joy shared is multiplied.❤️🙏

CATHERINE HACKETT

YES! We deploy them in the next episode I think…. They made it go from death rolls to annoying. It did help for sure. Stay tuned!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Kazza, we have all been there, where our energy is flagging and the demands are mounting... we're human, you're human, and agreed, Brian is the best partner-husband-papa around. So glad you have him. ALSO, Nugs jumping around, playing, pulling both of you into playing with her and the whole LAND HO, ARRRRRRG thing was HILARIOUS. Thanks for sharing that joy with us, you know where we get to see her grow into the person she's becoming because you're bringing us along.

Colleen Balch

Unusually emotional, possibly planning an extended period of time ashore building a boat… 🤔

Sean Murray

Thank you for filming (and sharing) what you guys were able to film, and being willing to share, Kazza, the emotional side of a fellow woman, and a mother, and a lover, after a sleep-deprived passage where each moment was one to be managed. WE hear you soul sister! Editing was on-point as usual, wowzers! 12 sail changes in one night seems like an awful mighty slog to boot, Brian - crazy stuff. Sierra - nice job keeping mom and dad entertained, hahaha :) As always, happy to be here <3

Victoria Makris

We felt like that on a recent passage turned out we had COVID...

Matthew Korwel

Kaza, we love and support you !! Don’t feel bad because you feel bad. It is a difficult life at times.

FRANCIS DEL VECCHIO

Annette and I appreciated this video for showing a window into the not so picturesque side of cruising. You handled a difficult passage with grace and strength. However, we found ourselves mesmerized by the dense lushness of Brian's armpit foliage, it is truly spectacular and even provided Kazza with a bit of a shoulder pillow.

Dave Crombie

This is why gentlemen never sail to windward!

Gravytrain

I know the feeling of being seasick! Sierra's boundless energy is incredible. Bummer that you saw all those Tuna and could only catch a Bonita.

Gravytrain

I'm with you, Sister! When you've had enough, you've had enough. I love that you communicate your feelings and have people who love you and respect them. Thank you for taking a risk and sharing. We are honored by your trust in "The Community".

Kevin Houghton

Thank you for sharing with us the reality of your hard times. My heart goes out to you all. I used to get car sick all the time because of a bad ear but grew out of it. For you two to live with it constantly for days on end and add to that that you are both such great parents that you push through your misery to entertain your precious Sierra. "Feel the pain and do it anyway". All of us out here on the other side of your computer screen reach out to you three and send our love. Peace, love, joy and health (that in the end punches through the mal de mer". Thank you for allowing us in your lives. I am honored to be a patron for you all. Spencer aboard Vin Vitae.

Spencer Norby

You need crew! In the old days you had lots of people to share the watches. More time to take care of Sierra. Glad you made it safely.

Mark Gumprecht

LMAO.. "Land Ho!, arrrrrr" Sierra is such a character! Another great episode, thank you!!

Alex

Second comment - Didn't somebody give you guys a set of those roll reducing "panels" that help nullify the rocking action? You showed them in an episode only a little while back. I first saw them on a Project Atticus episode. They actually seem to help.

Scott C. Wise

Ugh. I get seasick and just can’t imagine having to embark on a long passage that will end in a rolly anchorage. The feeling of being trapped on the very thing making you miserable while you are too miserable to barely function yet you HAVE to function is a trial of spirit. Jumping overboard wouldn’t help; yould still be seasick!

Anne West

Big hugs Kazza - its hard because its worth doing and you are so committed to Brian and Sierra. you will look back on these times with fond memories. xxx

Adventuremad

Wow, that first day looked brutal, those long interval waves are deceptive. Watching Sierra spin around while Delos rolled about made me feel noxious, and I'm sitting at my desk, haha. All jokes aside, the whole trip seemed to be a draining experience, glad you made it safely.

Stéphane O.

Oh boy! That was one rough ride! And Karin, I once got very (sad type) emotional after not getting any sleep for 20 hours. And I'm a guy and that's not supposed to happen to us! (but it still can) So I can sympathize with you. Last thing, . . . Sierra was Sooooo funny when she said "Land Hoe, Rrrrrrrr". LOL

Scott C. Wise

Hey Kazzaa.. always be sure to give yourself some grace. Raising a young child on your own is difficult even under ideal situations on land. The fact that you're doing it on a sailboat just the two of you is a testament to your strength, love and commitment to your family. You both are wonderful parents and are doing an amazing job with Sierra. Thank you for sharing some of the "less than perfect" aspects of your adventure with us. <3

Sean Martin

What a tough sail and tough time. Thanks for sharing the reality of life onboard. I’m really glad things improved.
