Added 2024-03-04 19:08:23 +0000 UTCAt the break of dawn we left Hiva Oa and set sail towards Fatu Hiva. An hour into it we looked at each other and made a spontaneous decision to alter course to starboard and turn a 40 nm sail into a 400 nm sail. Tuamotus here we come! Having that choice and freedom is my most favorite and amazing thing about this lifestyle.
The sailing has been spectacular with an average speed of 7.1 knots and a constant breeze hovering around 15 knots. Multiple fish landed and plenty of dolphins. Sierra is spending a lot of time camping on her tent we fashioned in the cockpit 🤣
Saying goodbye to the Marquesas feels so amazing! It’s been a challenging 3 months in these absolutely stunning islands. But now we can’t wait for calm anchorages, wide open spaces, and clear water 🥳

2024-03-04 20:19:52 +0000 UTCI just had someone ask me if there was anything wrong with Fatu Hiva? Why did we make this decision? I thought it's interesting so here you go: Nothing at all wrong with Fatu Hiva. It's an awesome place and one of the most stunning anchorages in the Marquesas. The issue was really with the weather. Lighter winds were forecasted later on this week. We were hoping to spend 3-4 days in Fatu Hiva and then leave. But given the forecast PredictWind was saying our 3 day passage would move to 4 days to 4.5 days, and then to mostly motoring. So we would have probably needed to stay 7-10 days waiting for the wind to return. So weather was the primary driving factor. However- we have also been rolling around in murky water with difficult to land on beaches for 3 months now. And if I didn't mention the thought of spending another week or so rolling around vs. the amazing calm and clear waters of the Tuamotus I wouldn't be 100% truthful. So there you go! Weather and the lust for a calm and clear anchorage can turn a 40 nm sail into a 400 nm sail :)
