Patron's Only BONUS - Interior Discussion Delos 2.0

Ahoy Delos Tribe, we've got something a little different for you today! As the hull is just absolutely flying along, the time has come to start thinking, pondering, and planning a bit more about the interior. It's been a fun but also very complicated process, and we thought it would be cool to just show you a bit of what we've been up to- what questions and considerations are on our minds, where are we getting our inspiration from, and also a very important and much needed update on Sierra's cycling skills! We hope you enjoy this little bonus video, and as always questions and suggestions are very welcome. We hope everyone is having a fantastic week so far!

Big hugs from all of us,

Kazza, Brian, & Sierra

No don't use spray foam it is bad idea,I mean it is cheap but check out SMC Industries,INC. My friend done it on his boat 🤗

Filip Udovicic

Yep, very true Courtney!

Good morning guys. One thought, creating systems to do simple jobs like heating water for tea sound great BUT what happens when they don't work? A pot that you plug in for hot water is simple and if it breaks no issue just replace. An instant hot water maker would need to be hooked into your fresh water system, you could (will) get a leak. If you were diving you could lose a lot of fresh water and Brian you end up with another task. Sometimes you complicate things by combining functions. you also lose redundancy, and Delos had a lot of redundancy. Just something to ponder.

Hi Karin and Brian, just a short suggestion for the trash. I think, it's super practical to be able to open the trash drawer with the foot. It drives me mad to have to open trashbin with dirty hands.

Henning Jockenhöfer

Have you looked into Aerogel for an insulator? Pretty impressive stuff.

Renée

It's definitely work but fun work! Looking great so far Kazza. Brings me back to the years when I was an interior architect. Designing for yourself is infinitely more gratifying than designing for others. 😉

Jean and Michelle in California

Banana bread? Shoot, now I’m hungry! Two quick thoughts: In our Kitchen (not a galley unfortunately), we have a pull-out drawer for the trash. It has a normal size kitchen bin for trash and another behind it for recycling. Not sure if that need translates when cruising. Also, on a charter boat (Leopard?), we had a small hole (4”?) in the counter that fed directly into the trash bin. I felt this made the trash access much more productive - and less likely for food scraps to land on the floor enroute to the bin. Also. Mom: Don’t go too fast. Dad: Go faster! ha ha, love it!

We were a crew. We loved working and learning from each other, There is no Opps in a Ship Yard.

Agreed constantly cooking .. same as on a ship. use the best

Stealth Mode

aye sometimes less is more keep simple Storage can all ways be retrofitted.

Am I the only one that has noticed that Kazaa’s arms are looking buff? I guess working on the boat is packing on muscle…

Robby Lafont

Wow! Interior talk already, nice! 🙏🏻🙂

Kent Wadenpfuhl

Glad you are finding space for a hot / boiling water tap! We use ours every day. Not waiting for boiling water is such a luxury. Instant tea and hot chocolate 😋

Are Årseth

Can't believe I suggested it at the right time. This may be a helpful link. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXXzXpD3_ng) Chris from SailHub is a shipwright, and is very informative. Maybe even contact him if you have more questions. You are Delos after all. P.S. - The winner for me was when I saw this used instead of kiwi grip as a deck treatment (Odd Life Crafting ep. 315).

William Houck

If it turns out useful, or hilariously not useful - posting some of the conversations would be interesting 🤓

Tom Caban

Oh thats a interesting idea Tom! will try that for sure :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hi Simon! yes will triple check that for sure. No one want to sit on an angle :p Cheers, Kaz

Sailing SV Delos

Cool William! actually in the mist of deciding/researching a bunch about insulation right now so this is really useful. Thank you :)

Sailing SV Delos

Oh yeah! that sounds amazing!

Sailing SV Delos

Amazing Alan! :D

Sailing SV Delos

No worries at all Stephen. Yes the prop and rudder are protected so she will be able to be beached if we need :) Super stoked about that!

Sailing SV Delos

going back to French Polynesia sometime early next year to sail her this way. not sure if we will take her all the way to AUS but maybe part of the way and then when Delos 2.0 is getting closer to be done it would be so cool to have them next to each other and do the "transfer" of stuff :)

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah for sure! great advice :) it is really fun and taking it in manageable chunks will be crucial to not feel completely overwhelmed with all the decisions and things to research. :) Awesome! going to be such a fun weekend. See you soon ! Kaz

Sailing SV Delos

👍 cool, I will

Sailing SV Delos

OMG! so incredibly sad to see all the destruction there 🫶

Sailing SV Delos

Brian, You should check out what Boston Whaler uses to maoe their boats unsinkable.

Charles Burns

Hey Brian, news from the Caribbean: Hurricane Beryl struck the Windwards; reports say every building on Carriacou as well as the vegetation - gone! 😳

Michael Williams

When I decided to move to land I wanted a "Willy Wonka" yard, so I could just go out and nibble on stuff, I always had "the Basil Boy's" on any boat. Perhaps for the new boat you need a planty "herb nook" of some kind. Using vertical wall space with peg board, like they have at the stores, at home has changed my life as well. One of the best decisions of my life has been to incorporate the art of friends into the bones of my house and just look up one of those old butcher blocks from the 1920's because those are just badass.

Emily

When we redid our condo kitchen and bathroom cabinets, Lowe’s has 3D software that is very helpful. Also, please consider copying the layout of a galley you like and make a few changes.

Dave Cummings

oh yeah Kazza has about completed her circumnavigation. Congratulations!!! when doing our home kitchen, I read square corner sinks are difficult to wash down the crud, so ine with some radius in corners and bottom would be nicer longterm. cheers. ps. look up 'miracle ball method' to streach out your back B.

Jason Edelman

This was very informative. However, what we learned is that nothing has been absolutely nail down yet. But clearly the final interior design will require a lot of thinking. BTW - The above video was mostly still shots with audio playing nicely. In other words the video was hanging up repeatedly. I'm sure the speed of my graphics card may be the problem, but I always get a smooth video feed at 720 over on YouTube. So, perhaps this was shot at 4K or even a high frame rate at 1080. Still, there's no place to make video resolution adjustments here on Patreon. Also, if it helps, the slow mo videos don't seem to hang up. PS - You need to remove Sierra's training wheels on her bike. My father NEVER put training wheels on any of our bicycles and in less than a hour, with his help, we learned to balance on our own. Sure we fell over a few times, and in the beginning learning to stop was tricky. But still we felt really great compared to other kids who "needed" their training wheels.

Scott C. Wise

No. He hurt his back while working on the new boat.

Scott C. Wise

For a second I thought Sierra will do a repeat of her hitting a hard stop from the episode ends 😊

Andrea and Gisela

Sooooo many decisions to make 😂😂

Andrea and Gisela

Brian I spray 2lb closed cell foam it is totally impervious to water transfer we have used it for sealing out water in many applications adds immense flotation my foam is R7.5 per inch

Shawn Ishler

If you can answer what is brand and model of the fridge/freezer

Shawn Ishler

Don’t forget a space for a CO2 tank and soda tap!

Robert Giroux and Cindy Xu

Watching and listening to Kazza work through the myriad of design variables was like watching a Professional Boat Builder's Interior Design Consultant! Between that and Brian's engineering prowess...I have not doubt that it will be amazing. Enjoy the journey as much as possible.

Michael Williams

Everybody is all in the technical weeds, and I'm just here smiling about the dog in the basket. <3

Sean Martin

As world experience on Delos as add and taught you the good the bad and the ugly of living inside the limits of your current sailing vessel your videos shared with us tell that Your working through the Challenges It is a grind by so is life and living with the oceans of our world

John A Briggs

Great points on insulation. What about a hybrid approach. Foil or foam thin panels cut to fit with a thin spray over the top? Bonds it all together and stops most of the air leaks, while giving you a way to cut it back out where needed for repairs?

Tim S

…Brian had the sniffles?

rodney weiner

Thanks for the peek behind the design curtain. I can't imagine how many decisions you guys are going to have to make. I guess it's like eating an elephant and you should probably just take one bite at a time.....

Peter K. Noone

Have you considered using aluminum for the cabinets? Moduline is a US company that makes great stuff. Light and strong.

Steve K

Have you tried using SketchUp to do the drawings? It's a cool and powerful online 3D drafting tool. Takes only a few hours to learn and become operational. I'm currently designing a custom aluminum(!) RV trailer and using it for everything.

Steve K

Have you experimented with using ChatGPT as a tool to help with creative brainstorming? If you tell it that it is an expert in sailboat interior design, and you want it to interview you about your design requirements for a particular space, you may find it asks some questions you have not considered yet. You can really dive deep with it, if you have an in-depth conversation

Tom Caban

After designing my own cafes for 25 years space efficiency is crucial. We used to sit on piles of phone books to work out barstool to counter heights. Good fun. Remember to leave knee cavity space for bar stools. So many people get this wrong and you end up sitting on an angle. Looking good guys.

simon hantler

Everything looks awesome and I'm glad to see all the planning. Only thing that piqued my mind was insulation. I recently saw SailHub using sprayed cork insulation, even showing it used as a decking treatment. It looked awesome for aluminum hull boats. They spoke of it's attributes as a noise reduction, thermal insulation and a condensation barrier. Check out SailHub and Odd Life Crafting for more or checkout seacork.com

William Houck

A nice industrial aluminum counter height fish butchering area on the back deck area would be cool. With a wash down sprayer that drains overboard.

Stephen R Baugh

Brilliant video, will be good to see the balance that goes into the whole boat, everything from the hull construction, the electrics, plumbing and the decor. I'm interested in every square inch.

Alan Gore

I know this is a conversation about boat interiors, but I was curious about the beachability of your new hull. I think that is an important ability to design into the hull making it sturdy enough to beach the boat for maintenance and repair in any location without having to be hauled out. Also strong enough to be dragged off anchor and survive. Forgive me if this has already been discussed.

Stephen R Baugh

Love it, lots of work but definitely fun stuff! Sorry if it’s already been covered but I am super curious about what the plans are for Delos 1.0 after the build. Keep up the great work!❤️

Dave Crombie

What you guys have going in your favour in designing this beast is a vast wealth of real experience living on a vessel long term as well as seeing what works in all the vessels of friends and acquaintance s you have met around the world. Planning the way you are is so important and you are more than up for it. My only suggestion is staying aware of proportion and scale. A couple of times when prototyping, I have literally drawn up a to scale paper plan of a component to see how it interacts with people and other parts of the boat to make sure it was functional. Research broadly for materials, surfaces, power consumption etc. Most importantly once you settle on components, is planning all of the services to make it all work so it is maintainable, functional, safe, reliable etc. This is where Brian will shine as an engineer. Big job but you guys have what it takes. Cannot wait to see the hull and have a beer with you. See you in a week or so 😊
