Week 34 - Finishing up the Platformer
Added 2018-09-03 12:52:31 +0000 UTCTL;DR: This week I'm working on a platformer episode again, it might be the last one, it might be the second to last one. Not yet sure! After that we'll do some Patron selected topics.
The platformer series will be wrapping up with either one, or two more episodes. I have at least a couple of things I want to touch on but it depends how much I want to get into one video. Will see once I dig into it.
I had talked before about following up the Platformer series at some point with a "Season 2" but I'm currently a bit colder on that idea. The problem with these series is that while I had a pretty good idea of the code for the game and how it would develop from the start, things changed a bit along the course of the series and eventually - very true to the form of game development in general - the code ended up in a place where I wished I'd planned or structured the final piece better from the beginning.
Not that I don't think the series is good, I think I managed to teach loads of different concepts starting from nothing at all, but if I were to do it again, I'd structure and write some things differently. So at the moment at least I'm not super keen on doing a *direct* follow up. Of course not to say I can't cover other topics to do with platformers as I've been doing along the way.
Before kicking right back into another big or even small series I want to do some more poll-selected videos. So that's what we'll be looking at after this wraps up. As I've said before though, I do want to carry on creating new fun project-based series..eses... like this.
Also if I find time I want to do some LD game rating! I haven't done any yet and LD42 wraps up on Tuesday. Bad me. So I might stream a bit today or tomorrow!

I think typically the issues with advanced content are that more experienced developers don't tend to need or rely on tutorial videos and especially a series. I can only really demonstrate how to build one specific thing, that already exists, at a time. More intermediate developers should be coming up with their own stuff and going their own way, and largely when they seek out help it is for a specific, complex, isolated problem. That's the sort of stuff I cover in my patron-polled videos. Where I can put time into cleanly delivering a solid approach to something more complex or niche. Ultimately I don't think the project-series format lends itself well to a more intermediate audience.

2018-09-03 17:51:14 +0000 UTCThe Platformer series has been excellent. It is by far one of the best if not the best intro into GameMaker 2 for beginners and those wanting to learn the mechanics for a platformer. That being said. I would love to see you target a more seasoned/experienced audience. As this will allow you to truly showcase your knowledge and skillset and simply focus on the MEAT. Thereby removing the need to have to continually explain the basics of coding and GameMaker. As that seems to increase the amount of the video run-time and ends up making a series longer than it needs to be (if that makes sense). More importantly, anyone wanting to keep up with an intermediate to advance series could take the Platformer series as a prerequisite. It's just my observation obviously, but you seem to have so much knowledge to share and sometimes it feels like your holding back because you don't want to lose the newbies. Raise the bar :) #NoMoreTrainingWheels
