Week 1 - 2019

Happy new year everybody!

2018 was quite a wild ride. We more than doubled my Patreon income, I published roughly just over 60 videos, published a ton of source code on itch.io, took part in two Ludum Dare's and a GM48 jam, worked on some fun collaborations and my latest project PokeyPoke, all while staying alive and keeping a roof semi-firmly over my head. Given how brutal of a year this was for so many people - and let's face it, the world at large in many respects - I'd say I rolled good numbers.

Thank you all so much for 2018. For believing in the work I do enough to fund it and keep it going. Patrons come and go but some of you have been here for years now, some since the very beginning. I want to find some ways to reward that long term support, because it's been so invaluable both in terms of paying my rent, and just my sanity.

My adorable three year old nephew was kind enough to bestow his lovely christmas cold upon me which has plagued my winter holiday and gotten my new year off to a bit of a slow and fatigued start instead of the fresh, energy full bang I had intended for Week 1 of 2019, but that's life. We'll pick back up, we always do.

PokeyPoke & Patron rewards

I'm not much of a person for yearly resolutions. But one commitment I want to make this year is to finish and release PokeyPoke. It's important to me that my passion projects make it out of production and don't just sit in limbo for years. 2013 was the last time I release a commercial game. That's 6 years! So I'm ending that this year.

$20 pledgers will get the game for free but I'm probably going to extend that to my longest term $5 supporters as well as finding some other cool ways to reward my tier 3 & 2 supporters who've been with me for a long time. Think kickstarter style rewards, that you've already earned just by being awesome and don't need to pay anything new into.

We'll get you guys involved in the game somehow. Whether that be naming NPCs, leaving behind little messages, or whatever else.

I won't be releasing the full source code. As it includes more than just my work. But I'll see if I can find some small things I can release, probably for the tier 3 guys.

The Work Resumes

So first up this year in video land is the other end of the Isometric tutorial. Gonna schedule that for release on Friday the 11th. I'm officially (oh gosh, a promise!?) scheduling some livestreams for both that Friday and this coming Friday. Livestreaming was random and sporadic last year and this year I want to make it a much more regular part of what I do. Maybe even turning that into a revenue stream as well eventually!

Comments

Thank you for all your contributions to the game dev community, and especially the educational part. I've started out 2019 sick also, but Happy New Year anyway! I'm pleased that you've given us some tutorials on isometric, one of my faves. And finishing PokeyPoke (not crazy about the name) is a great way to help us all by being a role model and Getting That Game Done!
