The Amilcar's racing team supercharged the 1.1L I4 engine, which produced 83bhp at 4800rpm, to compete in Voiturette racing events around the world. The Amilcar CGSS would go on to dominate Voiturette class racing throughout the late 1920s.
Designed as an enthusiast’s first racing car, many customers drove the CGSS during the week, as if a regular sportscar, and then also competed in racing events on the weekends. The CGSS weighed only 550kgs, featured a 4 speed transmission and, included 10.2-inch drum brakes on all four wheels. Other things were kept simple, the CGSS did not have a differential which saved weight and cost, the suspension used semi-elliptic springs with friction shocks at the front and quarter-elliptic springs with friction shocks at the rear.
