The 49C was powered by the famous Ford Coswoth DFV V8 engine, which produced 440HP at 10,000RPM. The Lotus 49 was one of the first F1 cars to use a stressed member engine combined with a monocoque, and this continued with the 49C iteration. The front and rear both utilized Double Wishbone independent suspension.
By 1970, the three year old Lotus 49 design was no longer the dominant design in F1, and it would be replaced by the 72D during the course of the 1970 season. However, the 49C still helped to propel Lotus to the 1970 championship by grabbing 6 points finishes (top 6) and most famously Jochen Rindt's victory at Monaco.
