Hey hey Patrons!

We are back with a real cross and unsettling episode of Squid Game coming off one of the biggest fuck you cliffhangers in history!

We're digging the big stealth vibes that Detective Batman Brother is giving in this episode!

This is among the most gruesome visuals in the show to date!

And though Morgan leads the pack of not trusting Number 1, Sean starts to see how it could all come together!

And we find that the whole rub of whoever set this whole perverted thing up is obsessed with is... Equality!

Oh thanks so much for the clarification! 😊

"Hyung" and "Oppa" sort of have the same meaning, but Hyung is an affectionate term that a younger man would address an older man while Oppa is an affectionate term that a younger woman would address an older man. Oppa can have a romantic/ cutesy connotation. Some girlfriends would address their boyfriends as Oppa, hence the translation for babe in this show; Min-Nyo isn't trying to make every man her babe but you know what she is trying to pull with her feminine charms. Actual siblings would also use this term between a younger sister to her older brother. Or it could just simply be a term used between closed friends of the opposite sex. So the context of the relationship is really important. Because of how personal "Oppa" can mean, not every woman will use it willy-nilly and it could mean a big deal for some men to be upgraded to an "Oppa". When Sang-woo offered Ali to call him as "Hyung" instead, it was played up as a big deal to Ali. Ali did not see the both of them as equals (given his immigrant/ brown status in a largely monoracial society and his blue-collar/ labourer job) and has been addressing all the Koreans as "sir". So to be offered by Sang-woo to address him as Hyung instead denotes a sense of closeness between them; both in terms of status and friendship.

As I understand it, there are a few quirks of the Korean language that don’t translate well. In this episode, Sang-woo tells Ali to call him “hyung” which is a title for men to call older men who are close, and means something like big brother? The subtitles just put in his name instead, which is cleaner but misses the subtext. Also, the word Bad Mom uses to address Snake Face “oppa” is translated to “babe”, though I hear it’s supposed to be said by women to men older than them. That explains the bit where Snake Face was guessing her age a couple episodes ago 😮 (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong) Makes me wonder what other things we miss!

Prequels galore set up in this episode. I find it interesting that the creator was sitting on this script for 10 years after it first got rejected in 2008. I wonder if the characters were different or if it had a different subplot more relevant to that decade. Obviously had time for rewrites bc these episodes are pretty perfect so far
