The Legend of Korra S2E5 Full & Uncut Reaction!

Hey hey Patrons!

We're back with another hit of The Legend of Korra and this one has some fun and great concepts, a few issues we have that watching with a 2021 lens is prolly at fault for, and a WTF ending!

Meelo and Tenzin's Lemur training lessons are so much damn fun!

We get eyes on Buff Daddy Bolin and we wonder if he's aware that Varrick is obviously planning on shooting the Four Nation's first porno flick!

We're a lil' bit concerned with some of the weird Military-Industrial Complex vibes we're getting from Asami and Varrick!

IF YOU CAN'T MAKE MONEY DURING A WAR?!?! EXCUSE US!?

The Legend of Korra S2E5 Full & Uncut Reaction!

Comments

Exactly Ci-Ci! But TBH a lot of LoK is plagued by those early 2010s YA tropes. He was introduced as this super cool bad boy bad ass type and then got rid of everything that made him cool to make him this heartthrob or whatever lol

Briana J

Especially since he got so mad when Korra judged him briefly/naively for running with a gang

Ci-Ci

Yeah! You would think he would be a little more apprehensive of the upper echelons lol

Ci-Ci

I'm with you guys. I love Meelo. All the kids are hilarious, so I don't get the hate.

Sean Silence

LOL you're absolutely not alone in thinking Mako is unlikable, so many people in the fandom feel the same. I agree with your complaints about the narrative choices here. I feel like what we learned about Mako's background in season 1 and his approach to life was kinda gutted with him becoming a cop who snitched on his girlfriend to the literal president... especially since he grew up on the streets. I just feel like he'd have a certain distrust for the higher-ups. he doesn't do anything necessarily bad here but it's still annoying lol

Briana J

Weird

SaviorOfNirn

Yeeeeah, this one and the next are . . . not really my favorite episodes in the Avatarverse. But at least on the other side of next week's The Sting, we get to some of the coolest episodes across either show.

Totes, sure she's trying to form a coup but Unalaq literally invaded the south with no cause and is acting like a dictator. She's a teenager expected to figure out a complex political war, and not sure how to do that. The south has no real military and she's scared.

Ci-Ci

I agree with your statement mostly about the characters Naiveté and how the show knows these things are wrong but is choosing to show the ugly behind the scenes of war. Often rich opportunists have a hand in what goes down. I do think Korra is wrong in trying to form a coup, but I think it needs to be kept in mind that she is a teenager (frontal cortex not fully developed) with an insane amount of pressure put on her shoulders. and believes it is solely up to her to stop her fascist uncle from basically taking over her homeland and subjugating her people. Lets not forget Unalaq is evil and ends up trying to basically destroy the world, so her desperation for intervention early on is somewhat justified...if united forces had stepped in earlier and prevented Unalaq from taking over and forcing korra to open the spirit portal, some certain bad things at the end would have never occurred. Though that would make for a boring season. So I would say Mako is more realistic (you shouldn't start a coup) but he is also less invested (its not his tribe on the chopping block) and more removed from the situation... also maybe not the best communicator cause he doesn't share with Korra who he thinks attacked the cultural center or any of his ideas. So to her it could seem like he is indifferent to her people. Obviously the cops he works with are corrupt and stupid so he is definitely correct on that front as well.

Ci-Ci

While I don't necessarily agree that Korra going to Iroh behind the president's back was the right thing to do, I 100% get why she did it. If my home was being occupied by an overpowering military and my family and friends were in danger, and I knew someone who could help them fight back, I would ask them for help.

to be fair i always took it as although korra, bolin, asami, varrick, etc may be protagonists we usually root for, the show knows they are way in the wrong here. The dark themes are not to be condoned here. Operating out of either malice or ignorance can both end up with the same devastating consequences for millions of people. Bolin is just dumb so he doesn't know why this is bad, and Asami is probably naive in that way too bc she is a teenager to be fair and just wants to save her company that she now runs bc of her father being a terrorist. Not good obviously but she's not recognizing the full scope of this. Varrick may be fun and whatnot but the show knows that he is opportunistic and puts profits over most things (i know you guys have at least finished season 2 by now so obvi not a spoiler). Korra is overzealous and singleminded, also irrational lmao she's trying to start a coup because she's mad her uncle played her like a fiddle and that her family is the underdog in this water tribe conflict. I know Mako is kind of dry/unlikable personality-wise like so far but im fully on his side in this arc. He is the only one seeing clearly but keeps getting dismissed by his coworkers and berated by his petulant and abusive girlfriend who refuses to listen to reason or contemplate the implications of her actions.

Weeeeird I thought we cliped those! sorry! Will switch out the video for later!

Sean TankTop

We have!

Sean TankTop

Seriously. I know they've already watched it, so eager to see how they liked it.

William Timmins

Just curious, you guys said you were filming this ep in summer, have you watched all of season 2 at this point? Just wondering how you guys do your filming and stuff!

Ci-Ci

Well I think it’s just the text of what’s literally on screen, I think its because we care about her that we’re frustrated. We’re a bunch of Tenzin’s over here.

Sean TankTop

are you new here?

Grace

cant wait for you guys to see the next two episodes

Grace

I'm curious how your guys opinions on Korra's character will change through season 3/4. She ends up being one of my favorite characters but if I remember correctly, I think I was kind of annoyed with her in season 2. But now that I know her whole arc, it's hard to remember.

Ci-Ci

When you guys were confused of which pole we were at, for some reason I thought of, "King in the North". It would be funny if there was a, "Queen in the Norf!" in the Avatar series. EDIT: At 5:54 and 17:33 there is a loud screech.

Avi Chetri

wait, so Beifong is the captain of the police and you like her, but Mako joins her police force and he's now unlikable? Cool.

Walter

"Bitch, invent the ipod." 🤣 Thank you, Morgan. The absolute last thing I was expecting to hear in the orchestrating a war convo.
