no. mako (mah-ko not meiko) did all of season 2, they just put the in memory of in this episode cause it fit better than with the finale. so maybe you just heard him being sick but to me he just sounds like his normal self, no difference for me

I believe This was one of the last things Mako recorded for Avatar, I remember seeing an interview (cant find it again for the life of me ) where someone said that Mako started crying singing that song at the at the end(which they kept in) because for Mako he was the soldier boy marching home to his death, having lost his battle to cancer. Knowing that, this episode makes me bawl every time. you will notice later in the season that Iroh doesn't speak very much for a few episodes and thats because they were catching Makos understudy up to speed and rerecording some things so it was intentional. Im pretty sure most of this is still Mako though. All of season 3 is the understudy i believe.

Mako, the actor who voiced Iroh (sounds like eye-roll) died of throat cancer. The scene from this episode was the last he recorded but not the last he was in. We don't get the new Iroh till book 3.

Another really interesting thing to note was that during the Tale of Iroh, he spends his day helping people through life, and it's all through the stages of life. First he helps a small child calm down when he's crying, and then goes to a group of older children and tries to tell them the importance of honesty and taking responsibility for their actions (but not in this case; run!). Finally, he helps a confused adult with his troubles figuring out his life. This is sort of a parallel with raising someone through life, something Iroh couldn't fully experience with his own son. Such an incredibly written story, especially given the very short amount of time they took to tell it.

"If only I could have helped you" - I imagine Iroh helps everyone regardless of who they are or what they are doing because of his guilt and inability to then help his son Lu Ten.

I never talk about Iroh's backstory with new viewers until they see this episode. There's also a bit of an irony that Iroh as he is now would be an amazing Fire Lord, but it took the death of his son, followed by his spiritual enlightenment and newfound desire for a humble existence that made him who he is in the present. Also, Mako recorded just about all of Book Two, but his understudy, Greg Baldwin, did record/rerecord certain lines. The scene where the ball goes through the window for example was Baldwin.

I really hate how some ATLA fans spoil things by saying which episodes they think are the best/worst. It sets up annoying expectations and gets rid of some of the surprise.

Oof, been waiting for this one. It’s a relatively small moment in the episode, but no doubt one of the most memorable of the show. I think what especially made it hit hardest was its unexpectedness and lack of resolution. Despite having already explored significant issues beyond the scope of a normal children’s show, this moment really pushed the envelope on some challenging emotions a child might not yet understand - grief, regret, loss of a child, and the ability to continue growing as a positive influence in the world, regardless of your age. Nonetheless, this is clearly a heartbreak Iroh has carried for years that’s still not resolved and doesn’t look like it will be anytime soon. It’s a moment usually reserved for the climax of Pixar films but Nickelodeon put it 8 minutes into a mid-season episode of a daytime children’s television show, catching all of us off guard. This is definitely no fault on y’all’s part, being immersed in a community of people who have already seen the show, you’re gonna hear about this episode beforehand. But I’m glad it still had the same effect on y’all anyway!

I have watched The Tale of Iroh probably around 30 times because I love it so much. I cry every single time. Leaves from the Vine is a direct shot to my tear ducts.

I choose to believe that Iroh fucked up Zuko's hair on purpose so that his date would muss it up (and initiate some sort of physical intimacy with our angsty boy) Zuzu just can't process happiness and love, and it is tragic. Zuzo firebending to light the candles is a really beautiful moment, especially considering how Jeong Jeong described firedbending as pain and destruction. This is the first time we've seen Zuko use his bending in a positive way to create rather than destroy.

This episode is like a case study for other shows on how to do fillers right. It doesn't have to affect the plot, but it's such a wonderful opportunity for character development. Just curious if you guys plan on releasing the season finale all at once or splitting it up?

Actually Mako had finished recording all of Book 2 when he died except for like 2 scenes, one of which was the one in this episode when the kids broke the window . It was book 3 when he was replaced by his understudy Greg Baldwin.
